That's correct, les37b. I just finished registering, and it's a bit confusing. Just remember it's better to do this at home than standing in line at Customs & Immigration.

I fly in 9 days time. The only part I run into difficulty was inputting my hotel details which needs prefecture details and is auto fill. If you find the correct zip code (and remember to remove the hyphen if there is one, then it’s straight forward. I copied and pasted and it included the “-“ and so didn’t play ball until I realised. All hotel address details should be easy to find on the likes of booking.com

To assist, I have also printed the QR codes and sealed back to back in a slightly larger than credit card thing to hold and use in the machines and hold up as I walk through. Much easier than fumbling with your phone and getting connected to Wi-Fi when you have a connection to catch.

For Customs/Immigration, go to Visit Japan Web. This expedites Quarantine, Immigration and Customs. You create a profile and once completed you are issued a QR code.

Important to do this. The queues mentioned will no doubt be people who hadn’t and without the cleared status QR code passes.

Which cruise port in Tokyo does the Celebrity Millennium use? Not sure why but I am unable to find this information.

In addition, can anyone suggest a hotel in Tokyo that is in walking distance to the above cruise terminal?

    Thank you so much!

No one would know for certain without the cruise information to check the port calendar.

The CruiseMapper app or what’s in port website are useful tools to help look up.

Once which port is identified, you can also get a better idea for a hotel booking. I’d recommend taking the ease of transfer from your airport to hotel then to port into account. I’d certainly rely on metro trains rather than taxis, which are very expensive in Japan. Your choice though.

  4. Annoyingly we fly to Japan in just over a weeks time. No test needed to enter, but need to test prior to boarding and also daily temperature checks. No self serve on the ship anywhere. We depart Japanese waters on the 4th May….. Just slightly too late for this good news.

Just returned yesterday on Silver Whisper from Sidney to Tokyo (34 nights) and then around Japan (another 9 nights). It was a fantastic cruise! I had read some lacklustre reviews, but found them to be inaccurate moaning. Excellent entertainment and staff, food very good, lectures hit or miss. After 78 years on earth, this travel experience rates in the top 3!

We had to get e-tourist visas for Australia, but all other visas taken care of by Silversea and billed to account while on board.

Japan required all food to be served by staff (no self-serve in Panorama Lounge or at buffets). Also required were daily temperature checks usually performed by suite staff in the morning. They caught us on the way to breakfast (or if I was up too early, I stopped by reception).

If anyne wants more specific information about ports of call or tours, let me know. I could only read posts once I returned to the UK, so sorry this wasn't more timely.

Many thanks for your reply and offer to answer a few questions. Much appreciated.

Rather than answer here (as it would take it a little off Topic), I will ask here, but maybe reply in a thread I started for Japan a couple of weeks ago. (Don't want to be accused of a hijack!)

Firstly, glad you enjoyed. I just returned a fortnight ago from a Dawn Southern Caribbean sailing. Never really even gave it much time at all prior to sailing - all my "research" has been for Japan and my Osaka to Seward sailing. It's a big deal for me this one.

We start in Osaka - I arrive a couple of days before sailing and intend to buy an Osaka Amazing pass and a Suica pass for metro and minor purchases. I've probably got all the info needed, but if there is any place you think is definitely one not to miss, please shout. On embarkation day, we are going to leave our cases and take the Shinkensen to Kyoto. We won't get much time there and primarily to tick a box for the train! We did the same in Singapore.

Next up is Tokyo. I have booked the "views of Tokyo" tour, but to be honest, I think we will cancel and just do our own thing on the metro and be out for the whole day. The ship doesn't depart until midnight, so have plenty of time. Anything recommended?

For Miyako, we have booked "JODOGAHAMA & RYUSENDO"

Hakodate we have booked INTRODUCTION TO HAKODATE

Muroran we have booked NOBORIBETSU HELL VALLEY & NINJA SHOW

Kushiro, we have booked KUSHIRO EXPLORATION

Any knowledge of any of these or if you recommend something else at these locations, please let me know.

It's interesting that self serve buffets are off the menu. I've a theory all of these extra precautions (pre board tests and daily temp) are Silversea being ultra cautious because of the implications if infections rose above 10% as the ruling in Japanese waters would mean the cruise is cancelled. That would not be cheap for SS if that happened!

I'm fine with not having self serve. Jan last year on the moon, it was staff serve only and yet I still saw people grabbing the spoons with their hands touching the food. Put me right off.

Anyway, anything you can think off. We are on the Muse, so nothing ship related is necessary for me, but know that Whisper is buzzing around Japan and others may find that helpful.

    Thanks in advance. Much appreciated.

Hope you have a great time les37b!  Please will you write a review / thread because I am also very interested in how cruising in Japan is now? Maybe for the future!

Will try. I was intending to do so for the Dawn but failed miserably. I expect the blurb below will be dropped shortly as Japan is lowering covid as of May 8.

Terry, it’s the muse sailing to Seward.

I’ve just received the boarding details, which is probably quite relevant for this thread albeit mostly just relating to Japan…. Excuse the length!!!!

Your upcoming voyage is fast approaching, and we wanted to take the opportunity to update you on what your cruise experience will be like.

Whilst our top priority has always been to safeguard your health and safety, please rest assured that we have worked hard to retain and enrich the exceptional onboard service, the unforgettable experiences, and the immersive nature of our voyages that you have come to expect when travelling with Silversea Cruises.

As your voyage will be embarking in or travelling through Asia, we are writing today to share the entry, embarkation, and vaccination requirements to help guide you in your travel preparations.

With the uncertainty surrounding current travel regulations, this information might evolve by the time of your voyage, and it may change based on the cruising region of a particular itinerary. Please know that local regulations may require more stringent protocols (e.g. masks may be mandatory), in which case Silversea will comply with all local requirements and guidelines.

Whilst Silversea will facilitate entry into each port of call during each voyage, guests are responsible for complying with entry requirements for the Country of embarkation and the travel requirements affecting their return journeys.

Please make sure to contact your travel professional prior to departure to understand if new information is available. It is each guest's responsibility to know and understand the protocols for each of the countries on their itinerary, including isolation and quarantine protocols.

    VACCINATION & ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

All guests are kindly asked to ensure they comply with the country-specific entry requirements for the country from which their ship/cruise begins. For Japan entry requirements, please see a breakdown below:

Japanese Border Measures: Please click here. Guests are required to use Visit Japan Web to register online and satisfy entry requirements before your departure flight to Japan.

Requirements for valid vaccination: Please click here

Test Results Certificate before departure: Please click here

IMPORTANT: Guests with 3 doses of a vaccine (including booster/s) are not required to perform a PCR test before flying. They are required to present proof of vaccination only.

Guests who are fully vaccinated with no booster (i.e. 2 doses of Moderna, AstraZeneca, Pfizer etc. or 1 dose of J&J ONLY) are classed as having an “invalid vaccine certificate”. Guests with an invalid vaccine certificate must present proof of vaccination and a valid negative PCR test result within 72 hours of their departure flight. For more information, please click here.

It is highly recommended that guests embarking have a booster shot.

Guests are strongly recommended to purchase travel insurance that covers COVID-19 illness.

    United States Entry requirements

For guidance from the CDC and their requirements, please click here.

The U.S. requires all non US citizens to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at least two weeks prior to arrival/entry into the country. For more information please click here.

If you are an international guest travelling to the U.S., you must complete an ESTA application that can be found here.

To embark a Silversea vessel, all guests aged 12 and older must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at least two weeks before embarking on the vessel. Guests must bring proof of vaccination or boarding will be denied.

    NEW EMBARKATION AND CHECK-IN PROCESS

Our check-in process has been relaxed and will be performed entirely shore-side, whilst embarkation will be staggered to ensure ample space for guests' comfort and safety.

    • In order to complete our comprehensive sanitisation procedures and to best prepare for your journey on board, embarkation will start at 2pm and suites will be ready to welcome you in superlative comfort at 4pm at the latest. Unfortunately, no guest will be allowed to embark before 2pm.

    • You can enjoy our onboard public areas from 2pm onwards whilst your suite is being prepared.

    • You will be welcomed in dedicated areas at various locations on the pier, where you will be required to present your proof of vaccination.

    • As a precautionary measure, you will undergo a pre-embarkation health screening, which will include a health questionnaire, and a touchless temperature check.

EMBARKATION WILL BE DENIED TO GUESTS WHO:

All positive cases and their travelling parties will be managed on a one-by-one basis with the local health authorities. This will be in accordance to the measures, which, depending on the case, might vary from self-isolation to hospitalization.

In cases of denied boarding for COVID-19 reasons our Silver Care team is at your disposal and can be reached at silvercare@silversea.com; or: +1 954 713 40 50.

In case boarding is denied, our team will arrange the necessary isolation requirements followed by repatriation in cooperation with local authorities. For further information on our Covid-19 protection policy, please click here

    ENHANCED SAFETY DRILL

We have designed an enhanced, staggered group safety drill that will be completed in two phases to ensure physical distancing and to reduce the drill's duration.

    • The safety drill's first phase must now be completed by viewing and acknowledging the safety drill videoon the 'My Cruise' app or on your in-suite TV once onboard. This first step must be completed upon arrival in your suite to enable you to be pre-assigned to a group, time slot, and muster station for phase two of the drill.

    • The second phase will be performed from a minimum of one to a maximum of three groups in our dedicated muster stations to ensure physical distancing.

PEACE OF MIND WHILST ON BOARD

As part of our commitment to safeguarding your health and safety, we have implemented science-backed protocols on board with which you will be required to comply.

    • Physical distancing: Physical distancing among guests will no longer be required; although our crew will maintain this practice.

    • Masks: The wearing of masks during the cruise will be at each guest's discretion, with the exception of the casino, the theatre, and during muster drills where masks remain mandatory. Masks are highly recommended inside shore excursion buses, unless there is a local requirement that makes them mandatory. You may be required to wear masks at indoor venues. Whilst we recognise that the wearing of a mask is a personal choice, we do strongly encourage our guests to wear a mask whilst indoors aboard ship, other than when actively eating or drinking, or when in the privacy of your suite. Note that the Staff and Crew aboard all our ships will continue to wear masks for the foreseeable future.

    • Hand sanitising: For your comfort and safety, you will be required to engage in frequent handwashing. We will provide you with a luxury portable sanitisation kit, which will include a hospital-grade hand sanitiser. We have placed hand-sanitising stations in prominent, easily accessible, strategic points throughout the ship.

    • COVID-19 Symptoms: In case you develop COVID-19 symptoms while on board, you should immediately notify the nearest member of onboard personnel. Contact numbers for the Medical Centre are also available on your suite's TV and in the Chronicles. COVID-19 symptoms include cough, fever, shortness of breath, sudden onset of ageusia (loss of sense of taste), dysgeusia (altered sense of taste), or anosmia (loss of sense to smell). Additional less specific symptoms may include headache, chills, muscle pain, fatigue, vomiting and/or diarrhoea.

    EXPLORATION ASHORE

    • Guests wishing to go ashore will be able to experience each port either on Silversea's shore excursions or, in destinations where permitted, independently, at their leisure — all whilst respecting local health and safety requirements, if and when applicable.

    • All shore excursions will comply with Silversea's health and safety measures. To better prepare for your journey with us, please book your shore excursions through My Silversea before your voyage. You are reminded to carry your vaccination certification with you when exploring each destination, as you may be required to present proof of vaccination to access restaurants, transportation, and local attractions.

    IN-TRANSIT GUESTS

    • To enable the suite cleaning and sanitisation processes to be completed, you will be required to leave your suite at 8am. You are invited to enjoy breakfast or venture ashore — on one of our shore excursions or independently — whilst waiting to re-enter your suite.

    • Silversea may provide an additional test, if required.

    DISEMBARKATION DAY AND RETURN HOME

    • To enable the suite cleaning and sanitisation processes to be completed, you will be required to leave your suite at 8am on the day of disembarkation. Before disembarking the ship by 10am, you are invited to enjoy breakfast.

    • For your return journey, you are responsible for complying with all local health and safety requirements — those of your country and the countries through which you are transiting, which may include additional COVID-19 testing.

    RE-ENTRY TESTING REQUIREMENTS

It is each guest's responsibility to know and understand their home country's re-entry requirements before disembarking the vessel.

For your convenience, we offer the following optional service:

    • Monitored Self-Test Kit — Abbott Binaxno™ COVID-19 AG Card. The Optum COVID-19 Ag Card Home test allows you to complete your post-cruise testing onboard, or any place of your choosing, with the help of live video supervision by a Certified Testing Guide. We recommend that you order the kit/s at least one full week in advance of your sailing. Your results are typically ready in about 15 minutes. To order, please click here.

If you develop COVID-19 symptoms after disembarking the ship, you should self-isolate and seek immediate medical care, sharing your travel history with the health care provider and a Silversea representative.

  7. A post in jest…… but is it!!!! Bookmarked for further reference to check back on! 😅

All SS sailings to Japan require pre boarding tests, despite Japan not needing a test to enter. From 8 May, Japan are downgrading Covid to the same status as flu, so hopefully SS flollow suit. Fingers crossed for our pre board tests in 2 weeks time! If one of us is struck down… just hope it’s after we are over the threshold and get to sail.

  8. I’d certainly not risk it. If it were 12.30, I might give it a try, but KEF is too far.

I have a Viking Iceland sailing in August that has an early morning flight, but we berth the previous evening and so disembarking early is what we have to do. We know the only problem with this is the ungodly hour we need to get up.

  9. Not happened to us since a 2016 sailing, which saw a drop in price which we got a refund one month, then OBC as that was the offer promoted on the next month. Never seen that happen before or since.

I’d certainly not be interested in a FCC. OBC now excursions are included is not so good, particularly since the shops have dropped items we would have bought.

My missus always benefits with our OBC buying Swarovski jewellery. On the Moon last month, SS have dropped less expensive brands, so she selected a pair of earrings on display to be given a special price for us of $21,800

So no point in OBB now either.

  10. 9 hours ago, Presd said:

I argued that point directly to SS (we booked direct) and they said they could not price match since I’m in Canada and the reduced fare I quoted was in the UK.  Lesson learned.  I will be doing more research before I book again, if I do.

To be fair, you would need to compare for the country you reside and comparable offer for and the main reason would be for flights. That aside, exchange rates and original pricing are always different. You cant use the US site quoted in $ and use exchange rates to make a comparison.

But anyone in the UK highlighting this fare, shouldn't be shown the door.

@les37b  Interesting...the August 27th voyage you mentioned popped up today on the website as bookable on Silversea. Both D2D and P2P pricing are available, as well as a low single supplement offer.  Only Deluxe Veranda and Vista suites show as available.

    Interesting.

You can book a Vista on Silversea for £5600 but a balcony elsewhere available to anyone for £2999.

I am not sure what US travel insurance is like, but here, it is very easy to check that cruise cover is included. Cruise is usually one of the options that comes up when selecting the type of cover. The only important thing is to make sure the dates include the non-cruise part of the holiday ie from when a person actually leaves their home. I wouldn't be too worried not using the Silversea air program and booking flights independently. My caveat is to fly in a couple of days before boarding so that if anything does go pear shaped with the flights you have time to actually get there.

It's a sound plan to arrive a couple of days before you sail. I've done exactly this for my sailing in 2 weeks and arrive in Osaka for 2 full days sightseeing first. I'd be gutted if we were delayed, but that buffer should ensure we will catch the cruise regardless.

The potential issue I refer with insurance would be prudent to check. That's all I'm suggesting.

Most travel insurances cover you for travel from and back to your home country. If you book up your own flights, that's your holiday. If you tie in your cruise with an independent booking, that cruise is from and to a foreign land. If your booking by a TA is all done as a package, then unquestionably you would be covered (as you say, as long as cruise is part of the insurance.). However, there is a potential that some insurance companies will deal with this as 2 separate holidays, one of which wont be covered as its not travel from your home country.

Please appreciate, this is just advice for those who book their flights and hotel separate to their cruise, don't fall into a real "gotcha", that some unscrupulous insurance companies can and HAVE pulled. Its only after reading about what happened to an un-suspecting traveller this became apparent. I'm simply saying check the small print if its been booked separately.

Most of us would take it for granted its a holiday insurance and of course doesn't matter if its bought at different times. Most insurance companies (I'd like to think) wouldn't pull that stunt. Some do and can be avoided.

I am assuming that they will update the website, at least as it relates to the Solomons. I have no idea WHY they are requiring tests for countries that no longer require them. Virtually no countries do any more- why would SS require tests for only a few countries? Perhaps it is because of the significant penalties if the ship turns up with CoVid. It seems very odd to me that they would but who knows. Will let you know what their response is to me.

Would it surprise me to discover that the website was wrong? Sorry but no.

SS website states you need to test to board in Japan as stated above (by zqtchas and can personally confirm is the same on my ticket).

It’s not a mistake and you do not need to test to enter Japan if vaccinated. Yours maybe is and hopefully the case. I’m just saying that SS can and do require tests even though the country doesn’t. I have explained why I think it’s the case on cruises out of Japan and that is down to the cruise potentially being cancelled if infection rates rose to 10%. That is a rule by Japan which would be costly, so logically SS are doing their best to ensure no one at the start has Covid and is to primarily protect SS.

  14. 48 minutes ago, 5waldos said:
    1. I am not assuming- the instructions included on the SS website for the health form states that the Solomons require a CoVid test. And that in order to comply with their requirements, SS would provide a test during the 72 hour  window.

So they are going to test you despite not needing one……. Just like Japan? Or just saying the website is wrong and will be updated?

I was specifically referring to Japan as it is Silversea insisting you need a test to board and it’s them calling the shots and not actually following Japanese mandates. I’m just saying it’s possible they’ve made a similar decision.

  15. 55 minutes ago, 5waldos said:

They seem to require a preboarding test if you are sailing to a country that demands the testing no more than 72 hours prior to arriving. However- check out the official websites of the countries you are visiting- Silversea is NOT up to date on some of them. For example the Solomon Islands no longer (since October) requires testing although as of yesterday SS still claimed that it did. And it was because of this testing SS was requiring that we be tested before boarding. They would then provide additional tests on board (free) within the 72 ours of arriving in the Solomons.  I am certain of this information since I have spoken to the embassy and received an official email about the testing. Since we don't sail til very end of September I am sure that SS has ample time to update their forms.

You are assuming that it is a country requirement and not a SS preference. As mentioned earlier in this thread, Japan doesn’t need a Covid test to enter for fully vaccinated visitors, but to board, we need to take a test. This is a SS not a country requirement. Ironically from 8 May Japan are downgrading Covid to flu levels. This test (I believe) to to protect itself financially as cruises in Japanese waters with higher than 10% infections means immediate cancellation.

    finally got my address info.

do you think a self administered antigen in the hotel and photographed

on your cell phone count as time stamped?

The daft thing with this, the test could have been done a month ago and by someone else. The only "proof" is your phone timestamp (assuming you have a connected SIM used in Japan that controls the location time.

From what I've seen, do the test and photo and take it to the ship with you as "further proof" you just did the test and happy to show if requested.

Ive got proctored ones that get issued with a certificate. My concern here is the time stamp is 10 hours behind Japan and that's what they show on it. I wanted to do on arrival to get it over with but not sure that's wise. That said Photo holding said test with date and time - confirmed by the phone stamp.

    Messy isn't it!

And the bigger bugbear. Allegedly from May 8, Japan are downgrading covid to flu status. (UK already has and suspect many countries have already too.)

These tests I'm certain is a SS fear factor. Its not a Japanese requirement and the fear is over 10% outbreak and the ship is quarantined and cruise cancelled. That'd cost SS a lot of money! (And why I think they are doing this.)

However tonight bombshell dropped of Silverseas arrangements for those who have a midnight flight back to UK on Emirates which Silverseas selected

We are to leave the ship at 8.30/ 8.45 am    and have a 3.5 hr tour of Osaka Castle and then be dumped at Osaka Airport at midday ...even in Business you cannot check in until 3 or if lucky 4 hrs before departure !!!!   Or you can be dumped at Hyatt at 9.45 am and make your own way to Osaka Airport later ......wake up Silver seas ...you booked the flights not us

I had a similar issue, but not as extreme on our cruise ending last week.

The SS consultant was adamant there was no room we could use or excursion for our 1800 flight other than a direct transfer at 08.30 for the 30 minute Barbados transfer.

We did get a memo on the ship asking if we wanted a mini excursion, which we said yes, but still being dropped at midday.

I agreed to this as it was the best option. A day or so later, I was at GS and overheard a lady arguing her case and heard them offer a 9am departure, tour with lunch and arrival at airport at 14.00.

I then asked why I wasn’t offered that and the outcome was that it should / could have been, but was obviously a more expensive “included” option. They agreed to let us take it.

It worked fine…. Until wonderful BA delayed my flight home to LHR by 3 hours! How lucky we had that transfer after finding out about it.

Just to clarify some of the points above:

Thank you for your helpful reply.

You mention the need to connect to WiFi to access the Visit Japan website. I’ve already done the necessary and got my pre approved QR codes.

I’ve tried to simplify things (no need to connect that way!) and have printed out just the QRs onto double credit card sized docs (back to back), which I’m hoping should be fine.Hopefully I’ve done the helpful thing here… or will they insist on the harder way and show the same QR connected via the website on my phone? My way should definitely be quicker, but only if allowed?

my TA said today that the Japan visa is no longer required but will double check with SS.

Agree, it’s always best to double check especially as different nationalities will have different requirements. That said I’m fairly certain for this cruise, you don’t need a Visa (I definitely don’t), but the important part is the visit Japan QRs.
