  1. Because the Baltic Capitals is such an intensive cruise one really doesn't have a lot of time to enjoy all the ship amenities. They are long days on excursions (Berlin is a 3 hour trip just to get to the city) so really the ship doesn't matter as much as doing the Bahamas.

Many cruisers are exhausted on this cruise, and will schedule down time in one port just to regenerate.

So true. I was 35 when I sailed the Baltic (with HAL) in 2008, and bedtime was a blessing.

  2. My experience (based on many cruises) has been that the majority of cruisers have no respect or real appreciation for the crew who cater to their every whim. I stand by that belief, which has only been strengthened by my experience on Cruise Critic.

When they tell you to disembark, get off the ship. Period.

  3. You will love this line for the very reason you cited - lots of nooks and crannies which offer endless hours of quiet relaxation. I listen to audiobooks, and have never had any trouble doing so on a HAL ship, even though I love people-watching and need some activity around me to prevent my mind from wandering. In addition, the demographic on HAL ships skews older than other lines (before people flame me, please note that I have been on at least a dozen HAL cruises with my mother, who turns 80 this year, and my aunt, who will be 84). I am a devoted HAL cheerleader!

  4. Thank you. It was not a pleasant time, that is for sure. However, I would argue that the OP was not accused of anything. He fit the description as given to security. They confronted him at Guest Services and took him someplace to be questioned. We can all argue till days end whether or not that meets the definition of "detained". I agree with you here. He was detained as he was probably not free to go if he chose not to answer their questions. However, his detainment was not very long and was during a pending investigation.

Another area I would argue is that the OP doesn't have any right to see any file RCL may have kept of the incident. This doesn't fall under a Freedom of Information Act request as RCL is a private company. However, even if they were a government entity, law enforcement is not bound to release all records. I am sure my name is in a file somewhere with the FBI since they did make an appearance at my home though I doubt I could ever get my hands on what they have in it.

As far as you feeling the world has become a sad place... we have many more rights now than we did in years past. During the inception of the FBI, Public Enemies were often stalked and executed by agents rather than attempting to arrest them. They were never tried for murder or any other crime. Not to say there are not abuses in today's world, they were more egregious a couple generations ago.

Thank you for your gracious response. I wish you well.

  5. Scottee25, I'm terribly sorry that that happened to you. I urge all of you who believe my reaction to this incident is hysterical to read his post. At the end of the day, his name was cleared. He knows what he was accused of and has been cleared of that specific offence. Doesn't OP deserve the same peace of mind? The knowledge that this won't come back to haunt him? The ability to review any file RCL might have kept of the incident? Without identifying the child or his/her parents, of course.

Or is OP just supposed to endure being falsely accused because hey, that's the way it goes? If so, what a sad world this has become.

  6. He was not detained. Please re read. If he was held in some sort of "ship jail" for any amount of time then I would agree with you. But he wasn't. He was immediately brought to a room and asked probably 1 or 2 questions for a very brief amount of time and then let go. That's not detained. I now see that you have a problem with people who reproduce which makes more sense of your dislike of parents and children. And so I repeat, what if it happened to your spouse?

You have no idea how difficult or time consuming it would have been for the ship to check where a person actually was at any given time. I believe this would be incredibly difficult. So they decided to take a few minutes and just ask him.

One is "detained" any time one is questioned by law enforcement or persons with law enforcement authority, not permitted to decline to answer the questions, and not allowed to leave.

I dislike people who automatically assume that because I am childless, I am an idiot. Since the people who make that assumption are usually parents, draw your own conclusion. I am all for protecting children and other vulnerable members of society from harm. I am NOT in favour of random and arbitrary detention in pursuit of that laudable goal. Had that happened to you, you would be screaming bloody murder.

  7. I'm done with the "Mommy and Daddy mob mentality". This person was detained and questioned for an offence he could not possibly have committed. Ergo, he was falsely accused.

I specifically recommended that he NOT request or demand compensation. I suggested that he force the cruiseline to tell him why they detained him. I stand by that advice. Despite the fact that a bunch of people whose only claim to fame is reproducing have chosen to hurl insults, OP needs to know the truth.

  8. The OP was NOT accused of anything, reread his post.

As I and several others said to OP

    "Welcome to Cruise Critic"

This is want I meant.:cool:

I'm well aware of the fact that most first-time posters seek drama. Thank you for pointing that out.

  9. He was accused of inappropriate behaviour toward a MINOR. I wouldn't let a cruiseline, or any other business, get away with making such a serious accusation about me. No way in hell would I let that go. And I'm a huge supporter of any type of law enforcement.

  10. I am SO tired of OP and myself and people like us having our opinions immediately discounted because we are childless. Newsflash - kids lie. Frequently. To get themselves out of trouble, or to get attention. Of course security was right to investigate. You always do, even if you completely disbelieve the child's version of events. But the OP has rights too. One of those rights is to be informed of the nature of the accusations.

The mere fact that there is a child involved does not invalidate his Constitutional guarantees.

Parents like some of you make me dislike children. No one else matters. No one else even exists.

  11. . You received an apology, what more do you want? Mistakes happen.

To be confronted by my accuser. After working with children for 30 years, I know at times children lie, usually to cover up something they have done wrong. I would want to know what I said/did and again, why did they not review the camera footage.

Exactly. And a good lawyer can help him discover the truth and rest easy.
