  1. Hello, I am faced with yet another big dilemma in Alaska,

I am currently booked on the Denali summit flight tour which I am very excited about at the Denali princess lodge: But today on my cruise personalizer I noticed another tour called Denali flightseeing with glacier landing by airplane. I think that this would be a once in a lifetime opportunity to land on the side of mount Denali, but wondering if this tour also flies to the summit of the mountain as well? Which tour is better do you think

  2. Hello, I am faced with yet another dilemma and hoping I can get an opinion of anyone who has or hasn’t done a flight tour of mount Denali. I am currently booked on a Denali summit flight with the Denali princess lodge where the flight takes you to the summit. Thought this was a real once in a lifetime thing! But then today I noticed this other flight tour where you actually land on the side of Denali. I don’t know which one is better, with the one where you land, it says in the description that 90% of the flight is just over the park. So just wondering if the summit flight is the more better flight? I thought it would be pretty amazing to be able to land on the side of the mountain, but I don’t know of this other tour flies to the summit of the mountain.

Here is the link for the two tours. If I can get some opinions that would be greatly appreciated

Sorry the above links might not work. Here are the links to the two tours.

  4. We will travel from Copper River to Kenai Wilderness lodge by motor coach as part of our land tour and then on to Whittier to board the ship. I will look into the tour out of Whittier to see if that may work for us. I was not sure if there would be time for that on embarkation day. Thanks for the input.

Hello, are you doing the SB8 connoisseur tour?

  5. Hahaha!! Yes, all in fun... But just a little much for me!

I know for sure that the photographers were out in full force at Glacier Bay....

Look for one if you are really interested in Hubbard Glacier... or stop by the photo desk beforehand to get info and let them know you would like to get some pictures.

Will do! Thank you very much :)

  6. If you pre-paid the gratuities' date=' they won't take any more off for gratuities.

Some people like to pre-pay them. Some people get them as a perk at booking. Some people pay them as part of their onboard account. Totally your choice.

If pre-paid, then you are done with that issue.[/quote']

Okay, thank you so much. I’m very excited to be trying a new cruise line :D so exciting indeed!

  7. Yes..... they are big about photos, as these are big money-makers.

They have the set-up and schedule down to a T.

At one stop, they have a couple of guys in red and black flannel lumberjack shirts, and as you come to exit the ship, they jump out at you and yell/growl like their axes, like ax murderers. Especially with the one guy on our sailing, with a VERY loud voice and accent, it was very stupid and annoying.

Hahaha! That’s funny! That’s great to know about Hubbard and glacier bay because next summer will be my first time on princess; my second Alaskan cruise. I have free 200 dollar on board ship credit, so I’ll definitely be using it to purchase the Hubbard and Glacier bay photos:)

  8. Heck...if u are going solo by all means the HIKE...the HIKE...did I say THE HIKE!!!!!!!!;p

Because the next time you go...you might have to go with "the majority."

I m Gng in May a 7 day RT out of Seattle..... booking snorkeling in Ketchikan.....figure that will be something different.....

Enjoy...your cruise.....looks like you have planned some wonderful excursions......

I totally am loving your enthusiasm!!! I know every time I watch documentaries showing snow capped mountains I always get all chocked up and think about this hiking excursion! lol.

You make a good point, and if I save this hike for next time I go with people, I will always have to do with the ones in my family who are concerned for my safety, saying "what if you get attacked by a bear, what if you fall and hurt yourself etc". Then I gotta defend myself and say "I'm with a guide, I'll be FINEEEEE lol"

Thank you so much. This will definitely top my previous Alaska trip from last year. I am doing the SB8 cruisetour with princess. Also doing to the kenai fjords cruise, taking a plane to the peak of Denali, taking a bus to Kennicott and hiking on root glacier (just to say I hiked in Wrangel St Elias National Park, the biggest national park in the US) and the Kantishna tour in Denali :). I can't wait for this trip! I dream about it every night lol

  9. Here is some info on some easy and not so easy hiking trails. Lower Dewey Lake is a nice one and you get some great views overlooking town. Smugglers Cove is very easy and short.

    https://www.alaska.org/assets/content/maps/Trail%20Maps/skagway-trail-guide.pdf

Thank you for the link! I will surely save this for future trips to Skagway. I just don’t think I’ll be doing anything of these on this trip because I’m going on my cruise myself and would never go hiking alone, only do guided hikes to be safe :)

  10. GOT your answer....remember if a lot of young children are enjoying the animals too.........adults loose out....because you hate to take opportunities away from the little ones.

EXCELLENT POINT land lover!! Lol I totally thought about this also ahaha! And you look like an insensitive jerk if you bud in through children haha

  11. If you love mountains and spectacular vistas try a flight with Mountain Flying over Glacier Bay. They are based in Haines but also do flights from Skagway.

The scenery gets more spectacular the farther you get from Skagway, the Lake Bennett train covers the most distance , and lots that can't be seen from the road. The rental car is a good option, head up to Emerald Lake as a turn around point. You can pull over many places and do some hikes anywhere you want to stop. The good views start past the summit so don't chose a tour that just goes that far.

Thanks for your input. I am aware about lake Bennett and saw many videos on YouTube. Definitely will add this to the list for future visits to Skagway.

The flight over glacier bay would be amazing no doubt about that. But I want to be on the mountains if you know what I mean. My cruise includes a day in glacier bay which I’m excited about.

I’m already doing 3 other flight tours. One before my cruise tour starts to Anaktuvuk Pass from Fairbanks. in Juneau I’m doing extended Mendenhall Glacier trek which includes a helicopter flight to the glacier, and in Ketchikan doing a misty Fjords flight with island wings :)

  12. I'd do the hike, and it's not even close.

For me, there's something more authentic about Alaska (or anywhere) when you see it... well... naturally. I've heard wonderful things about Kroschel, and I'm sure that it would be fun, but the ability to do that hike is a once in a lifetime thing.

Can't go wrong either way. But, if you can do it, I'd do the hike and not think twice about it.

Why thank you for your input Jeremiah! You’re speaking my language when you say this hike is a lifetime thing lol

  13. For me, no contest. If I could make it up to that summit and look out over all those mountains, that would be the most impact (Which it's doubtful I actually ever could have if they went the crampons and ice axes route. Possible if they did the other one). As you say, you could go to an animal sanctuary another time.

Thank you so much to everyone so far for your thoughts in helping me decide in which tour to do. Especially you Sea Hag :) I know I’ll just have to come back to Alaska a third time lol. Now I totally understand why people come to Alaska several times!

I already have the Kroschel wildlife centre tour booked. I booked it back in November. But then I found the white pass mountaineering tour a few weeks ago while browsing mountain hike excursions online. So if I end up choosing this I’ll just simply cancel the Kroschel tour. The good thing is that when I emailed the manger, he said the mounteering tour is not as popular due to how strenuous it is and due to the length of the tour. So I figure I still have a bit of time to sleep on it some more and think about which one I’m gonna do :)

  14. I believe they are a broker that gets a cut of the cost of the excursion when booking through them. You should be able to find the same (or similar) excursions booking directly.

That is correct. Alaska shore excursions is a broker. I found their website last year, and booked a tour off their website called the Mendenhall ice adventure tour in Juneau. Was one of the best experiences of my life...the direct company who hosts this tour is called liquid Alaska tours
