  1. For those experiencing snoring or a partner who snores, I strongly suggest getting a sleep study.  My husband has complained of my snoring for years.  I did a sleep study and was shocked to find out that I have severe sleep apnea and hypoxia (low oxygen), with my breathing stopping for up to 30 seconds at a time.  This can have very adverse impacts on your heart and other organs.  I put it off for years because the thought of going to a sleep center was so unappealing but I recently found an in-home sleep study option that was very professional and thorough with a follow up online appointment with a board certified sleep medicine MD to explain my results and prescribe a CPAP.

  2. I agree, the proctored online antigen tests work great if your cruise line accepts them.  The proctors are available 24x7 so it's super convenient.

Unfortunately my next cruise is on Viking and they require a PCR test; we are traveling for a week in the USVI and PR before our cruise so I have to find a PCR testing site.  For others needing a PCR test, I found this info stating that they are offered at the San Juan Airport (at a cost of $110):

If anyone used the airport testing site please let me know what the turnaround time was to get your results.

  3. Thanks for all the replies.  I’ll request a departure day test while onboard but will use the pharmacy option as a backup.  We’re staying in a VRBO in Rome so won’t have access to a concierge or printer, hopefully there’s a kinkos type place nearby.  I’m old school and prefer to carry paper copies of everything 😬

  4. Thanks for the quick replies.  It's all so exhausting figuring out all the requirements from the countries we're entering and transiting.  For our pre-boarding requirement I'm sitting here calculating potential test times plus 72 hours, adjusting for the time change....comparing to boarding time...worrying about how long the results will take...where to print them out in Athens....ugh.  Plus our flights (via Viking Air) have changed numerous times (I think we're up to the 5th change).

Honestly if it were just my husband and I we would probably cancel and use the voucher in the future when hopefully things aren't so complicated.  But it's a special celebration multi-generational trip with my kids and parents and I can't disappoint them.  The fact that there are 6 of us adds to the pressure to get things right and not mess it up for any of us.

I know once we're all on board it will be a fabulous time creating lifelong memories, I'm just stressing on all the administrative hurdles.

  5. We are disembarking in Civitavecchia on a Wednesday and flying back to the US on Saturday.  Is Viking doing the PCR tests of passengers on the day of disembarkation?  If so that test would cover us for our return to the US, otherwise I have to find a way to get tested in Rome.

    Thanks for any insight.

Agreed, it is weird that it goes away like that, maybe that is a privacy issue and they don't want it saved in the app check in.

Same here, I have the "Vaccination circle" check mark but the image and inputs are gone.  It's disconcerting because I'm type A and like to check and doublecheck everything.

For those of you who did finally get to preview excursions for your cruise, how far in advance did they show up? Weeks? Months?

We are sailing 12/22.  I noticed the excursions showed up in MVJ (list of tours with prices and times but not yet bookable) on 8/28 which is 116 days ahead of sailing but I wasn't checking every day so they may have shown up a few days before.

  8. We ordered the 6-pack from emed late in the evening of 9/22, they arrived 9/24.  The printed expiration date is 9/18/21 so they’re only good through 12/18/21.  We will use 2 for our October Caribbean cruise but I had hoped to use the rest in early Jan when we return to the US after a Mediterranean cruise and post-cruise stay of several days. I guess I’ll use them instead to self-test before flying to Greece although it’s not currently required.  At least it will help prevent a surprise denial of boarding when the cruise line (Viking) tests us upon embarkation.

We are headed to Italy Nov 16 to do the Viking Sea from Rome to Barcelona to San Juan.

Rome to Barcelona to San Juan sounds heavenly!

We're on the Venus Journey to Antiquities 7-night Athens to Rome in December.  Greece isn't currently requiring a COVID test for entry.  If Viking continues testing onboard daily then we would use that test to enter Italy.  My concern is testing for the return to the US since we need a test within 3 days of arriving back in the US.  We are staying in Rome for 3 nights after disembarking.  If Viking tests us the morning of departure I could hopefully use that for our return to the US but as a backup I'll bring these Binax tests so we can do the proctored test from our hotel in Italy.

I'm so excited to cruise after so many months of not being on the water but keeping track of all these rules for different countries is adding so much mental strain (first world problems, I'm well aware and grateful.)

I saw you are on Edge in October. We recently booked the 10/16 Edge cruise. Will we see you onboard?

No, we are on the 10/30 sailing so we’ll miss you unless I can persuade DH to tack on a couple more for a B3B 😀.  We just booked recently as well, I wasn’t planning on cruising that month (we have other land trips already booked plus a Dec cruise which would have been our first one since Dec 2019) but after reading all the trip reports and live reviews I just couldn’t wait any longer and added this one to our schedule.  The prices in Oct seem reasonable, they tick up afterwards.  And with the lower capacity they’re currently sailing at I think this will most likely be our best cruise ever.

Enjoy!  I’ll look forward to reading about your experience.

  11. I’m also interested in a 2024 cruise to see the eclipse.  I know it will cross through the US and it would be easier/cheaper to travel somewhere along the US path but Baja is more likely to be free of cloud cover.

I found this cruise but it’s very pricey!

I will just wait until the major cruise lines post their 2024 itineraries and hope that they’ll adjust their itineraries that week to be in the path of totality.
