I haven’t read those and will add them to my TBR. Have you read Under One Roof which takes place in Whittier? It is not a well-written book but I enjoyed the plot, the Alaskan setting and the moose.

Isn’t the bookstore on the wharf wonderful? I loved talking to the owner about the building’s history. That one is Hearthside books. The children’s section was delightful. The other bookstore in Juneau is up one of the side streets and it is Rainy Retreat books. I’m having some internet challenges and I’m hoping someone can search and post the address of Rainy Retreat books in Juneau.

The photos I posted today were from the bookstore in Skagway, Skaguay News Depot and Books. This is a highly curated Alaskan bookstore. Address is 308 Broadway.

Rainy Retreats bookstore: 113 Seward St - according to google 🙂

    The Thermal Spa

This may be the best dad story ever. Make sure you’re sitting down and are not going to spit your coffee or wine on your companion.

After our big casino win, I wanted to go to the thermal spa and hold down a hot ceramic lounger and let the thalassotherapy pool work its thalasso magic.

In the cabin my dad asked, “what do I do now?”

I said put on your bathing suit and robe.

He went in his room to change and I went in my room to change. We both came out wrapped in the dense snuggliness of  Haven terry cloth robes.  When we arrived in the spa all the loungers were taken and we had to wait a few minutes before two became available. I knew from last year to go full-on Princess and the Pea and stack the towels and pillows in order for dad to be comfy. I made his ceramic stone lounger cozy nest and told him to take off his robe and lay down.

    He disrobed.

    And there he stood.

Naked in the thermal spa except for his flip flops.

As I and all the other patrons gasped in horror, dad asked,

“What? Was I supposed to put something on?”

Moments later the entire spa emptied out. My dad turned to me and said in a soft puzzled tone

     “everybody left.”

Yes.  Yes they did. They did not know the Full Monty would be showing tonight in the spa.

After 20 minutes of hot ceramic lounging my dad turned to me and said, “I’m cooked.”

Then he asked, “where did my clothes go?”

    I laughed so hard I couldn’t speak.

I know this is Freestyle Cruising but no one wanted to see this.

If we get kicked off the ship due to indecent exposure, I’ll be really mad I don’t get those huckleberry truffles.

I kinda wish your dad would come to the spa now and scare away someone who's really loud 😬

    I would have stayed 🤗

I went before the comedy - just squeezed it in and then made a mad dash for the comedy with my new friend who I met in the spa, so it seems we did things opposite ways round!

A few of us from the Cruise

Critic roll call met today at 4:00pm at Maltings. It was so, so lovely to put faces to names and real names to usernames.  We chatted for an hour then I could tell my dad felt overwhelmed so we excused ourselves.

I brought him back to the cabin to have some quiet time. He sat on the couch while I watched the shoreside operations

and blew bubbles on the balcony.

It is always important to chill the bubbly!

Our port mate today is massive!

One of our Cruise Critic roll call members who came to the get together today was just on the Quantum and he said the entertainment was fantastic but the ship was extremely crowded and not well-designed for crowd management.

I love the helicopter landing pad on the Quantum of the Seas!

    It’s a beautiful walk!

I definitely felt nervous when I did it by myself and actually turned back. It was a drizzly day and there weren’t any other humans on the trail that day. They say you don’t need to be faster than the bear, just faster than at least one other person but that doesn’t hold true when hiking solo!

Hmmm, maybe I can find someone to do it with.

    Someone slow 😅

    1. 6.  Buy huckleberry truffles for myself, dad and @ceilidh1 Remember last year when I put my truffles in the fridge and my dad secured his in the safe? @ChiefMateJRK said dad is always right!

Wait, what - huckleberry truffles?? Where, when, how?

    My list:

    1. Naps

    2. At least 2 Aperol Spritz every day (can on odd days be exchanged for mojitos or g&t's)

    3. Stare out at water and views cocooned in the spa, completely forgetting my book (kindle)

    4. Hopefully find the energi to meet as many nice people as I usually do 🙂

    5. Buy weird candy for my kids

    6. Eat crepes and nutella creme brulee - missed that last cruise!

    7. Spot a lot of wildlife, except:

    8. NOT to see a bear!

    9. Find the courage to do the trams

    10. Renew my energi for coming back home

    🙂

Anyone else see a 25% off coupon for any 2024 transatlantic or transpacific show up in their account or did I hit the jackpot?  Still trying to figure out if I can make one fit into the schedule!

No, but I have a coupon for 1 pct off any cruise in 2024. I'd gladly trade you 😄

No, lol, one of the “rise-and-shine at 4am” events would be the morning of the Panama Canal transit. Since they appear to open the bow at 6am I’d want to be showered, dressed, completely fed, and first in line waiting to stampede the front of the ship for the prime spots when the door opens. Not much fun watching the transit when you’re several people deep into the crowd. Having never cruised NCL (and by that logic, never eaten in an O’Sheehan’s) I wasn’t sure they had some sort of pastries and other light options with juices/coffee available. Since the transit runs about 2-1/2 to 3 hours from when the bow opens to the second set of locks I’d not want to be passing out from lack of nourishment that morning. 😉

Looks like room service is going to be my only real option.

    😁

On my Panama canal cruise in December they had a little something in the front if the ship. Definitely water and tge watery juice and also the brown stuff they claim is coffee (it's not - it really can't be), and also some small munchies.

And, ehm, I went in my yoga pants and a tshirt. Noone cared 😄

  9. For what it's worth: last cruise I traveled with a friend in separate cabins. The first to arrive in a bar would often get the other a drink. I don't recall any of us being asked to show our own card once we arrived and started drinking it.

However, they may have assumed we were sharing a cabin and thus both had the drink package. (Which we did, btw).

For the sea days, I found a nice wicker love seat by the ping pong tables. You could move them and face the ocean to read. It was shady too, which I preferred. It would get kind of loud due to the ping pong tables but much quieter than poolside.

Inside, I found some couches on the same deck as the shops. It was great to be able to just sit, read, and relax by the window. I kind of just walked around one day with my book and glass of wine and found them lol

Thank you, it sounds perfect - I prefer shade as well 😀

Hello! I can help answer some questions. I cruised solo on the Epic in April from San Juan to New York. I was in cabin 12533. It was a great spot, quiet. I didn't hear anything unless people were talking right outside the cabin. It is on the 2nd floor of the studio area, and there are no specific studio elevators, but there is a stair case that takes you right to the lounge.

We had a great solo host for that cruise--Paul. I actually felt bad for the bartender too--he ran...we were a busy and active group. Paul was great and I hope to see him again! We would routinely have anywhere from 4-20 people that would want to eat together and he would help with the arrangements.

The spice h20 area is where a lot of the soot would blow, so I didn't really spend anytime there. During the sea days, I found a nice wicker love seat overlooking the ocean, by the ping pong tables. It was fairly quiet and allowed me to read. If I wanted to be closer to the pool and in the sun, I had no problems finding a lounger by the pool. For other quiet areas, there were a couple of nooks that I found I could sit and read.

The one problem I found is sometimes trying to find a table for the buffet at lunch on sea days, but other than that, I really, really enjoyed my first solo cruise on NCL. Let me know if you have any specific questions!

I'd love to hear where you found other quiet areas to read, please?

If you are taking a yoga class in the gym, mats should be provided. If you wanted to do yoga anywhere else onboard, bring your own or use the provided beach towels (or two) instead. I have never seen mats for rent on NCL, nor have I ever seen anyone take the mats outside of the gym.

I second this. Classes are $20 and you can find the schedule for the week in the gym.
