  1. Roads were closed in 2012 (scenic road in Skagway to Yukon and to famous abandoned mining town, forgot the name.) Roads opened on 7th of June.

If you're talking about a mountain pass road that goes through Canada in early May - that may be the case. Some of those "roads" aren't paved and are at high elevations. 2012 was a record snowfall year so unusual. The last 3 winters the snow melted by mid April. Southeast Alaska has more temperate weather than south central (Anchorage & Seward Peninsula). There are plenty of other excursion options and I wouldn't discourage anyone from cruising in May.

OP, have a wonderful cruise! My state is vast and beautiful with so much to do and see. If you come near Anchorage, let me know and I'd be happy to provide recommendations for you.

  2. My experence so far.

May (whole month): High risk of closed roads (snow). Even early June can be risky. The weather can be nice.

    September: Rain, closed attractions etc.

    Best month (weather/animals): June

My advice: Go for May instead of September.

Don't know what you mean by closed roads?? There's no snow in May. I live in Alaska and only road closures might be construction areas. In my state we call summers construction and tourist season [emoji6] May and June are known for more sunny days. August and September are more rain prone months.

  3. I had one bad experience aboard when a Windjammer waiter was annoyed that I asked him to retrieve a glass of lemonade for myself. The glass was literally slid across the table and my "thank you" was not acknowledged by him.

Hmm that doesn't sound like the usual service we've had in the past. The only thing I can think of is it's typically the drinks are semi self service at a station. You usually go and get your own drink (pre poured into glasses by staff) and maybe that is why you got that reaction from him?

  4. Saved $291!! Whoo-hoo! That might pay for a gondola ride and a meal in Venice.

Quick tip-- Gondola rides are cheaper before 6pm. Pay cash in euro and save money. Three years ago we did a 45 min ride (2 people) for €70. After 6pm it went up to €100 for 45 min and €125 for an hour. Expensive but if you're only going to Venice once in your lifetime it's worth it.

  5. Thanks for the info. I was not aware they would let you cancel a package and not charge you individually for all the drinks consumed.

This sailing was before the beverage packages changed on Sept 6. Wonder if they were just being lenient? It may not happen in the future with what they've done, but maybe case by case if you've completed more than half the cruise? Still...That's a lot of revenue to credit back, especially on longer sailings.

  6. Just did a bit more research on this and wanted to add a helpful link from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency to help you write your letter:

    https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/1254/related/1/~/children---child-traveling-with-one-parent-or-someone-who-is-not-a-parent-or

The "Parental Consent Letter" should include the following elements:

    • Who
    • What
    • Where
    • When
    • Why

Contact information for the absent parent(s). Having the letter notarized is not necessary but highly recommended. For frequent border crossers, the letter should not exceed one year. It is recommended to have the letter in English.

  7. Our experience has been that most times suites are least expensive when the cruises are first released.

Also, check the weekly sales flyer:

    http://www.creative.rccl.com/sales/royal/Multi_Dest/Special_Offers/rci_sales_event.pdf

I've seen occasional good prices for suites in that flyer.

Ditto. Book early and if you happen to also fall on a BOGO sale when booking, you can get a great deal. We got a Royal Family Suite for 5 people for $850 a person, upcoming 7 nighter on Liberty. We booked 19 months out and we hit a BOGO sale. Not too

shabby when balconies were going for $750 a person.

  8. Don't buy a new wardrobe for a cruise just for the sake of pleasing ppl. Please yourself!

Partly true, for some people that don't live in hotter climates though - we do need some new things when we vacation. I donate my used stuff to recycle clothes out of my wardrobe and it's fun to shop for new clothes. The new cruise clothes I wear after the cruise, often layered with a sweater or hoody when I come back home. I like pleasing myself with cute outfits. If I think I look good in something, I'm already in a better mood and when cruising it's doubly fun!

  9. Not cruise related but here's a tip - don't cook your bacon on the stove top, use the oven. Lay your individual strips of bacon out on a cookie sheet and bake in the oven at 375 degrees until it's as crisp as you like it. It will stay pretty flat and you don't need to worry about grease splatter.

We use the oven too! Extra tip: if you like your bacon crispy but perfectly flat, rinse the strips of bacon under cold water and place on a greased, metal cookie rack on a cookie sheet (lined cookie sheet with a 1/4" or higher edge/lip underneath, with foil) and the fat drips into the cookie sheet below and your bacon cooks flat and evenly.

  10. Have you checked out Torrid? They tend to have end of season stuff on the clearance rack at our local store in Alaska. Like you I live in an area where summers are short and don't get above 85 degrees. I also find things at Burlington and Old Navy. Sometimes there are great sales online and summer wear much cheaper buying in the fall when they put all of it on sale. For formal wear, try ModCloth online. Super cute dresses that come in plus sizes. I'm 5'4" and a 16/18/20 depending on brand.

  11. Someone mentioned the (potential) answer to that on the first page.

Nope - that didn't apply in our case. We only have two extra rooms in our group reservation block and both those rooms have a $500 deposit paid on each of them. We don't have any other rooms in our block with unpaid deposits. It's just weird how they made it sound like they were dropping a single passenger and the RFS cabin in the statement. Just strange. But the agent did say it was a system generated email.
