  1. here are some pics from our trip last week*

to give you an example of how my pics do not compare with yours.

*I see awfully cloudy days: that's half the problem right there.

Not a darned thing you or I can do about the weather

but remember what I said about picking my days.

Some days I just won't shoot. Waste of time.

Nothing like bluuue sky days to make me go out and shoot.

  2. What settings do you set your camera on? ===Automatic with flash cancelled.

I have a D40 and an nikor 18-200 vr lens and use a polarizer,

and while the pics are quite an improvement over my old point and shoot camera,

they don't look anything like yours.

Your blues in the sky and water are just so, well, blue! ===> Expensive glass.

My photos always seem dark and the colors not as vibrant as I would like.

Granted, I don't really know much about taking pictures, so I am sure the problem is the user. ===> No.

I usually just have the camera set on either auto or the landscape icon and go from there.

I also always turn the polarizer so that the blues look deeper in the viewfinder. ===> Sometimes, but not always.

Am I using this correctly? ===> Play with various pol.filter rotations.

    I'm not using ordinary lenses.

I always had a thing for ultra-wides...they seem to collect and manage light differently.

Everyone freaks out on the tele-zoom end of the lens availability range..

Aplmac goes the other way.

Polarising filters are odd things, don't always work the way you want or think.

Don't always go for that Darkest Blue look.

Sometimes you can get lighter blues that come out...not as dramatic, but more pleasing to the eye?

    I don't use mine hardly ever,honestly

but then the glass I use

is extraordinary in its light transmission abilities.

Polarising filters are not for everyday use. Try leaving it at home sometimes.

I took mine on the Apr. cruise...never once used it on the 18-105 Nikkor

I also pick my days and my shots.

I shoot lots of pics (950 on a recent 3 day cruise) and then select carefully.

Photoshop helps, although I don't do a heckuva lot with it,

    just gentle tweaks

  3. you are a doll to post them-they are so great.I wanna go.
Yeaahh I'm a doll  --you need to talk with my wife! :D :D

Glad you liked the pics so far

but these "Post your memorable ISLAND PICS HERE" threads I start up

are for everyone to post their photos...not just me.

so I'm hoping to see others chime right in.

It takes a few days at first.

I remember thinking the St.Maarten thread wasn't working

and then Good Grief it took off like crazy

    - and now it's had so much participation...like 115+ Replies and thousands of Views!

    You just never know...

  4. That's alot of temptation. I'm not sure how they can offer it so cheap though. ===> Body only! ;)

I see once I add a decent lens, it get pricey again. ====> well...yeaahh!

I'm going to save my pennies until next year:)

If I were you, I'd pounce on that body-only deal right now!

A lens will come later (sooner than you think).

Afford them "one month, then again next month" -and you'd have a neat camera sooner than you think.

This year 2009 is the year of the discounted deal, while the economy is in the doldrums.

    Buy now. Rare pricing opportunity.

  5. This is probably a foolish question for you veteran cruisers, but do you have your passports stamped?

On the cruise we did to Mexico, we never had our passports stamped.

Then someone told us that had theirs stamped in every port.

Does anyone do this? ===> Of course!

How do you find out where to go to get passport stamped? ===> Ask a 'uniform'.

I think this would be fun to do. ===> Why not?

I'm sure you're not the first person who requests their passports be stamped, despite no need to!

I'd go ashore with the passport at every Port (keep it safe)

and ask where I can get a stamp, at the nearest guy in uniform I see!

He'll point you the right way. ;)

  6. Actually, it was me asking about the D90 and it is a step up for me as I only have a small digital camera.

Right now it's the best I can afford. ===> it's all you'll need for the next 5 yrs.!!

I would love to go all out on a great camera, but that's in my dream world.

    When I bought the D60

I was moving up from 5 yrs. of shooting silly little Canon Powershots

(both of which gave me processor problems, btw..)

I wanted a SMALL camera body, so Nikon's D60 filled that bill, as it is their smallest DSLR body.

I knew whatever features it brought with it ..would waaaay exceed the two Powershots combined

    and it didn't fall short.

Many more advanced DSLRs start to get heavy and bulky as the price and features start to reach for the sky!

I don't want heavy bulky nor expensive, preferring to spend my money on glass -but you know that already

The only two reasons I'd move up to the D90 (if it's not too much larger than my D60) is

    * to get the AF built-in to the body rather than my lenses and

    * for the grid that can be enabled onto the focusing screen.

The latter helps with keeping horizons horizontal.

Oh yes, the D90's movie capability is an industry first in DSLRs...that's a nice feature to have as well

although one I could probably live without.

Buy the D90 and feel like a giant!

    You'll love it.

  7. Actually no I have'nt seen this thread, but I just checked it out!

Thanks for pointing me there. Antigua is a beautiful island!

I also did similarly-titled threads for Barbados and for St. Maarten.

if you go to those CC Port-of-Call boards you should find them easily.
