  1. We will be in Zuiderdam 7122 - how do we know if it is steel or plexiglass? I tried looking on HAHfacts - did not see it there

Yours is NOT a steel railing. You go to the HAL site (you can click on the QR block code in my signature) navigate to onboard our ships/ deck plans/ choose a ship/ Choose a deck from the drop down / there will be a legend of symbols near the bottom of the deck plan showing different aspects of the rooms. A room with a diamond symbol indicates it has a steel railing.

  2. You have to sleep in a lifeboat and bring your own PB&J sandwiches?

I figure if you can do it, and have the time, why look a gift horse in the mouth? Great price just not to be at work. Wish I could take advantage, but the airfare across country would cost me 5 times the cruise fare. :-)

Of course it would depend on actual travel dates but a search for mid-January from LAX to FLL (RT) was as low as $330.00.

  3. I scanned 700 messages on this forum for Zaandam in the title, and I still have questions! (But thanks for the positive opinions in the thread that asked about her as a ship in general!)

Is there a retractable clothesline in the shower?

    Yes there is.

Are the walls and door really a metal that doesn't hold magnets (enough to put up a map)?

There are areas where strong magnets will work, I have used the adhesive refill strips for 3M Command removable hooks as they don't damage the surfaces.

I read an older (2007?) review that mentioned renting a refrigerator in a class of cabin that didn’t include one – is that still an option?

Yes you can but do it early as the number of them available is limited.

Anyone notice if there are adult sippy cups available for sale in the gift shop? I mean “Car cups”, commuter cups… I know my mom would like to carry her coffee around with her as she seeks the best window or deck for photo taking.

I always take my own but if not on board many ports would have them (?)

  4. :D :D Here we go........ a Smoking thread. :D

Only a smoker is likely to have a disposable cigarette lighter handy.

Ack! ;) Think you can still pick them up in the shops(?) or at least in port (?)

  5. How can one sterilize instruments on a ship where guests are not permitted to have heating elements?

Though not as much fun as the alcohol option, ;):D you could use the flame from a disposable cigarette lighter.

  6. Thanks for posting Marney as always.

I'm curious, if you are talking to our ship builder, could you ask her what the fresh carrots were for that she was having left at her door?

I noticed when she was having her roll call scavenge for her that she requested that .....just curious. The carrots had to be fresh?

Possibly Orange (Halloween) accents for the "boodam" side of the ship (??)

  7. So you can bring your own wine on board a HAL ship? Really?

;) Veendam from Quebec to Boston in June 2015 - will we be able to bring wine on board? I ask because dry white wine is our preferred drink. Chardonnay just doesn't cut it for us.

This thread is a bit old wine policy has changed as of January this year. Now only one 750ml bottle per adult passenger is allowed to be brought on board.

  8. We have many different faiths and nationalities here also, but we still wish people happy Christmas regardless of their faith - most seem to welcome it and reciprocate.

The "Holiday Season" in the U.S. generally runs from Thanksgiving (late November) through New Year's, this encompassess many different Holidays for which "Happy Christmas" might seem an odd greeting. ;)
