  1. The bare minimum would be a 7 day cruise to nowhere. :D It never ceases to amaze me that the same ones that want a super cheap cruise (during hurricane season) complain because the itinerary is changed due to a {{{GASP}}}} hurricane. Try reading your contract to see what it says once in a while.

I would rather be on a cruise , any season, than sitting at home in PA

Watching the world go bye and be judgemental

  3. Question is, is BT a risk on a ship? It is a good question. It's not healthy to worry, but is that relative to how much you value the advantage of actually being here?

A planetary collision would not be fun, but when I see such a disaster flick it just reminds me of the beauty in the simple aspects of being on this earth. Just the amazing splendor of nature and the natural world is enough of a reason to be here.

Hurricane season , I tell you. Hurricane Season!!!!!

  4. Hello everyone.

We're doing a roundtrip transatlantic crossing starting from Southampton on August 20th, and for a change fancy spending a few hours in Brooklyn rather than going into New York.

Ideally we'd like to take a taxi from the ship, go somewhere nice for a couple of drinks then on to somewhere for lunch.

Is there a possibility of decent views of Manhatten from Brooklyn as I'm hoping to take some photos before a taxi back to the ship.

Any tips, advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, my hubby isn't particularly good for long walks, so I need to keep this in mind.

    Many thanks,

    Denise

    :):)

Cunard does NOT give the rt offer from bklyn anymore

    Too bad

You will need a taxi or car service. It's a long long walk to main district. In Brooklyn

  5. Some friends of mine might be coming over to New York in September and were a little concerned about the fact that they would be sailing on a "sensitive" (for lack of a better word) date in September. Is there any risk at all I wonder? I know QM2 is very "well known", etc... I told them not to worry, but I had never thought about it before.

I thought you were talking about the Hurricane season :D in New York and the east coast .

  6. First -- no panic or issues here -- our experience when NCL thought there *could be* an issue. We were on the Breakaway last week (7/6) when NCL thought there could even be the slightest possibility of bed bugs or any other sort of insects in a stateroom or on board, and how they reacted to it.

Our 25 y/o daughter broke out in a rash on day 2 of our trip -- we think most likely now it was due to the propellant in her suntan lotion (Coppertone), but at the time to be safe that it wasn't sun poisoning or something else, my wife took her to deck 5 medical to be sure. They were great and gave her some cordozone cream and told us it was most likely an allergic reaction as it didn't appear to be sun poisoning or anything else.

But during the exam, they noticed two spots on her arm that looked like bug bites and asked her about them. She didn't recall getting them in NYC before the trip, but she only noticed them while in medical.

The medical crew immediately excused themselves and advised that they were going to contact pest control and that they would not be allowed back in the stateroom for an hour or so while they investigated the matter.

I saw a crew of 3 people show up in our stateroom (I wasn't with them in medical), strip all the bedding and bag them, remove the mattresses and start to use an ultra-violet scanners and some other device to scan the room before asking me to leave. When they were through about 75 minutes later, they confirmed they found nothing, in not only the bedding or carpeting, but they checked the ceiling tiles to ensure there was nothing up there as well. They also sprayed the room with an okay smelling vinegar-like something as a further precaution.

I'm sure bed bugs show up all the time (I've been in some 5-star hotels where they have outbreaks), and am sure cruise ships are no different, but I was very impressed how seriously they took this matter and jumped on it immediately.

Hope all is well. Just a note. The Breakaway is docked in Bermuda for 3 days

Bermuda is semi tropical and FULL of bugs

When the ship is docked , it's like a house in Bermuda

So the will fly in when your stateroom doors are open

I have left Bermuda with all kinds of insect bites

It seems NCL did the right thing for you

  7. For me, the advancement of an opinion which, by it's content, will produce a strong reaction places an obligation on the person advancing that opinion to defend it, particularly if the original posting contains little or no justification for contentious content.

Perhaps I am a lone voice in the wilderness.

Then this is how you interpret the opinions

Here? Do you find that a bit confrontational?

    What is the point?

If a member gives an opinion, this member is not obligated

To defend their opinion. What would be the purpose?

Maybe an elected office here? LOL

  8. One person's 'backlash' may well be another's 'response'

I would have thought that it goes with the territory that if one posts on a public forum one must expect responses both for and against.

One must also be prepared to defend one's point of view.

Why should one be prepared to defend oneself from a posting an opinion here?

    Is this a political debate?

    Waiting for your reply:)

  9. Thank you T5LHR,

What a great post :) , thank you so much, a pleasure to read. The voice of reason and common sense.

With all best wishes, and many happy sailings for the future :) .

The voice of common sense doesn't make a cruise critic

We need the good and the bad , non fiction , to improve

    The services

We don't need a "dreamy novel " here

    It's all about the QM2!

  10. Sarah,

I've discovered this thread only recently. Thank you for taking the time to share your voyage.

I don't want to push you out of your comfort zone because you've obviously decided what you want to do, but it is clear from your interactions with other posters that you're a very competent writer. It would be wonderful if, aside from your reportage, we got to read more of your reflections. I think you've got a lot of interesting things to say, and I'd very much like to read more of them.

But this post is nearly a year old and the S/S Queen Elizabeth

Has done countless cruises and updated info

Confort zone doesn't make a cruise critic

We need relevant info not a gossip blog and alas Disney cruises

"Wake up and smell the Roses"

  11. Yes, you are right, especially the Kings Court's lunches in 2013 were lamentable. At times, all of the self services offered the same, and this on a very low level.

And I agree about the mediocre food in Kings court and Britannia .

I have been trying other cruise lines, and they are superior

  12. That would probably be a disappointment for those on board QM2 but not as big a disappointment as they were to me when I saw them a few years ago. I use the word saw in the loosest possible sense as we were a distance away and the fireworks were set off on the other side of a two or three storey building. This meant that it was only the rockets that were visible to us from the ship.

    Exactly !!! :)

  13. The early departure means that you may miss the fireworks which aren't due to start until 10.30pm. Or maybe they have altered their plans.

They are not missing much. The Dock in Boston where the QM2 is much too far to get a good view of the fireworks.

  14. Great report and informative

We were also on that cruise. The trip back

From Bermuda was stormy and very windy.

The television station that reports navigation

Had us in 22 foot waves. Gale force winds

From 32 to 40 knots. And this lasted the trip

    Until we got to NY

The Breakaway handled the storm amazingly

The ship of course moved , normally

And very stable. At 21 knots.

The speed was never reduced and nothing

    Went flying

    Great job

  15. We were on the getaway for spring break and what a disaster. We were a family of four and had originally booked one mini-suite. After some more thought we decided that wasn't going to be enough room so we called norwegian and asked to change to two adjoining rooms. No problem. We just needed to pay a cancellation fee and then we could rebook. Huh??? All we wanted to do was add a room. Anyways we went ahead with it and then our consultant told us since we were putting the kids in the other room it would be safer to give them an inside cabin across the hall instead of a balcony. Seemed to make sense to us so we booked and paid the difference. Well when we go on the ship we found out the inside cabin was indeed across the hall but the door to the inside cabin was not. In order to get to that cabin you basically had to walk all the way down the hall, across, and back up the hall on the other side of the ship. For some reason, my wife didn't want our 6 year old that far away from us. So we called guest services. Guess what they didn't care. We were told we agreed to that arrangement and there was nothing they could do. I told them we didn't agree to that at all. They said they would look into. I called the next day and no record of my complaint. What a surprise. They still didn't do anything so we had to cram all four of us into a room that was designed for 3 people. When I got back I sat on hold on their customer service line for 90 minutes and still didn't get a live body. Emailed our cruise consultant twice and nothing. I did log-into the site and was called within 20 minutes by a cruise consultant asking if I needed help booking a cruise. When I told them my problem I never heard from them again.

The shame of it all is the getaway was a beautiful boat but ncl's complete lack of customer service for issues has resigned me to never using them again. If anyone every asked me if they should book a cruise with them I will do everything in my power to stop them.

Sorry to hear about your frustration. It's suppose to be a vacation ,

And these people on NCL don't really care

I had / have a similar problem. The fare on the Breakaway dropped

$300 per cabin , we had 3 cabins next to each

    Other

When I called to ask about our fare that we paid more ,

They NCL claim they can't give the difference back since we already

Booked, but maybe they can upgrade us. Well never heard from

The agent , so I called. Finally got him after leaving so many messages

He said they upgraded us???? Just another balcony

But one cabin on deck 9, one on deck 13 and one window on

Deck 5. Now we are all over the ship

I will call back but common on, what kind of service is this????

  16. not IN my cabin, but imagine my surprise when I found this guy on my balcony out at sea. Guess he needed a rest.

There was a thread not long ago where people talked about having bats in their rooms. I'll take the bird any day.

It's special to see a large bird on the balcony at sea

I always see birds at sea that have gotten lost or pushed by storms to

    Sea

In March I saw a flock of finch flying around the

Breakaway. I left some bread on the deck

    And they eat it
