  1. I hope that by now your hip issue has been sorted out. The worst thing (well, certainly not the worst thing, but sooo frustrating) is when you get motivated and start a good health routine - and something like this sidelines you. Congrats on the mileage so far, though. Very impressive.

I've been busy. My life just got a whole lot better. Since I posted on May 21 I had a week at work, when I managed a whopping 6 mi of walking, but that was followed by a week of vacation at the beach. When I'm at the beach I do a lot of walking. When I'm not walking, I'm swimming, either in the ocean or the pool, but I haven't figured out how to calculate miles in a resort swimming pool, dodging kids and marco polo games and football games and cannonballs. Truth be told I'm not that strong a swimmer, so even 45 minutes of laps probably doesn't amount to much mileage.

I did walk 46 miles, my first thing in the morning walks.

We got home Sat. 6/3 and I got another 10 miles in over the weekend. Then, here's the best part - I woke up this morning and took a 9 mi walk. I didn't go to work. Why? Because I retired! Whooppee! My retirement plan is to take a long walk first thing every morning, then figure out the rest of my day. Since this is my first real day of retirement (before that it was just a vacation and a weekend) I'm glad I stuck to my plan even though rain threatened and it did drizzle a little.

Anyway - that's 65 additional miles with 857 miles to go in 95 days. Now I'm at the point of needing more than 63 mi per week. Yikes!

  2. Ye-eah - I'm looking at that 55.8 mi a week. That is ambitious. I'll give it a try. I am crazy active in the summertime. I love heat.

You definitely have the right idea to include weights and other workouts in your fitness routine. I always say I have to do some strength training for upper body, and stretching, but I just haven't found the motivation I have for walking and biking. I'm in a rut.

Added some miles - lunchtime walks 2 miles each day Mon through Thurs; biked to work today - round trip 18 miles so down to 943 miles to go in the next 112 days - definitely not averaging 56 mi. per week!

  3. dcwalker, I actually know someone who did that same walk! The Avon 39, right? That's a tremendous accomplishment and for a great cause. I followed her 39 mile journey through Facebook posts and may very well consider doing it myself one year.

Oh, that's so cool! That is the walk I did. You have to do it. The Avon39 is such a great cause and such a well-managed charity and the event itself is organized in such a way that despite what the weather throws at you, you come away having loved every minute of the weekend. You gotta try it. Good work on the mileage! I'll wish cooler weather for you if you'll wish warmer weather for me

So here we go - my cruise port is only 531 miles away, with 121 days to wait :(, which works out to only 30.6 miles a week - with summer coming that wouldn't be much of a challenge. So I googled the distance between my home and Half Moon Cay, which is 124 days away. The distance is 989 miles (flying across the ocean, but oh well) I have to shoot for 55.8 miles a week. With walking and biking I should be able to do that.

just finished a lunch break walk with co-workers - 2 miles down, 987 to go! Woo hoo!

  4. another question re "Port Canaveral as a Port of Call" - thanks

We'll be stopping at Port Canaveral as part of a Bahamas cruise. I want to be able to walk off the ship and keep walking until I find a beach. My philosophy is "everything is within walking distance if you have the time" and we'll be docked for the day, so there is time. Is this area walkable? Or is everything either fenced off or highways with neither walking lanes nor sidewalks?

  5. tdnosnhoj11, congrats on the 10K. In about a week I'll figure out my distance goal and start logging my journey to my ship. This weekend I have a 39 mile fund-raising walk - 26 mi Sat and 13 mi Sun - so that's been motivating me to keep moving. After that I'll use "I'm running to the ship" as my motivation. Keep up the good work and I'll see you next week!

  6. Oh, wow! I'm so glad to see someone on my favorite thread again. I have a couple of cruises booked, pretty far out, one in September and one in November. I have to do some math and come up with a plan - no running, but some walking and biking. Don't go away. Please!

  7. Thanks for answering my food questions. Maybe you really enjoy writing these reviews, but it's a lot of work. Do you have any idea how generous you appear by giving all your time and energy posting so that people like me can learn a thing or two, or twenty, and get a serious vicarious thrill on the Pride months before actually cruising? You and Patti are terrifically warm, generous people. Thank you.

  8. I have a word of caution to add to the people who say pack the same as you would for a land vaca. I made that mistake on my first cruise. My land vacations tend to be beach vacations, which means swim suit and cover-up and bare feet all day; then back to the room to change into shorts and a t-shirt to order pizza and drink beer and call it a day. Somehow before our first cruise it escaped me how much there would be to do in the interior of the ship and in the evenings when you'd want to be wearing real clothes, and to be dressed up a little. I thought it was all lounging on deck and poolside all day and grab a bite to eat from time to time at the buffet. I'm kind of glad I was wrong because when the cruise ended I knew I had to have a redo to correct my mistakes. And 5 cruises later I'm beginning to get things right.

  9. In a few months I'll be cruising on the Pride for the first time, so I've thoroughly enjoyed your review, felt like I was enjoying the cruise right along with you and Patti. I have some food questions. Chopsticks looks great and I can't wait to try it. Is the menu the same every day? And what is X.O sauce? Last question: why didn't you go to breakfast on disembark day? You can get room service or Lido deck breakfast on the Pride on the last day can't you?

  10. We had a balcony once. I was surprised that we couldn't use it on the last day. In the early afternoon on the last sea day the steward had to clean it because cleaning it wasn't allowed in port in Port Canaveral. After he cleaned it, it was locked. So no balcony for the last afternoon and evening and coming into port the next day.

I'll chime in on the "can never go back to interior" survey. We enjoyed our balcony very much, but I definitely enjoy an interior very much as well. It's a cruise; what's not to enjoy?
