Didn’t know that…..thanks to you and everyone for sharing these suggestions

It may help to join the AA frequent flyer club as it allows you to easily see flights on-line; you can also request wheelchair service.

Here is my experience this morning.

First stop was AA.COM.  AA was offering me to select seats, but the link threw me over to BA website and seat selection page.  (I have seen this before).  If I then go to select any Business seat, there is a price from low $100's up thru $147.  I presume USD since AA-codeshare.

Next, I logged in to BA website and accessed my flight.  Again (being ticketed now), I was allowed to select seats.  However, it was the same page AA.COM sent me to and when I accessed seat plan, same fees.  It is only free - apparently - to higher end Avios members and at check-in.

Now, I can't sit here and complain much because I had certainly read about folks facing seat selection fees, even in Business Class.  That said, I thought booking BA as an AA-codeshare might be a workaround.  I will try calling and see what I am told, but I do not hold out much hope.

This has to be a rarity - getting charged hefty seat selection fees when booking Business.

So, do not need to be told to avoid BA.  I knew that and was avoiding them, but the airfare we have is incredible low and even if I fork out another $280 or so for seats, it is still a bargain.  IDK how many folks will be selecting seats ahead of time as it would be nice to get window seats.  One good thing is this flight has the brand new BA Club Suite seating which recently changed from the old Club World seats.  It still rubs me the wrong way, however, as BA seems an outlier.  So, yes, I knew the risk and went ahead with the flight since the price was just not to be beat by a mile.

Just sharing the experience and will report again if I have any success with phone reps at either AA or BA.

This has been my experience too and we sometimes pay for the transatlantic seats on BA. Works well !

We've done two cruise tours through Princess and have gone on 7 Alaska cruises with Princess.  Would strongly suggest that you do the tour first.  You'll be very busy on the tour and after that it's nice to relax on the ship.  Also, most of the flights out of Anchorage are redeyes so you'll spend a lot of time at the airport after the tour if you do it in the opposite order.  Daytime flights from Vancouver are plentiful.  Finally the southbound route goes to both Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier.

We've been on all 3 ships and they would be fine for us.  But for a first time to Alaska I'd suggest Sapphire first and Grand second.  Both have a wraparound Promenade deck that is covered which is ideal for glacier viewing, especially if it's rainy.  We've also been on the Majestic and there's plenty of deck space for glacier viewing, you just lose the covered Promenade option.

I don't think you can go wrong regardless of what you choose but those are our preferences!

Agree. I spent most of my time with binoculars on our balcony. The Alaska board is a fount of knowledge.

  4. Our first cruise was on the Island Princess , Vancouver to Anchorage. We had a fabulous time! Since then we have been on the Coral, Majestic, and several Royal Class ships,  in October we will be on the Island again. Each ship has its own character dependent on the ship's age, its senior officers and the head chef. We take each as it comes and mostly sail for an itinerary. We expect our backs to act up, there will be cases of Covid onboard, variable entertainment, and no International Cafe but will choose what makes us happy and have a great time exploring the Med.

  5. I make sure I am well aware of what is going on at the airports through which I will be connecting ex time for terminal changes, customs etc. I would rather have a long wait than the stress of a short, even if valid, time to connect. I am treating EZAir like I would my own scheduling and check flights frequently on the airline's website.

Actually that was not the case.  When I spoke with the American Airlines rep they told me that the seats selected on AA Vacations are just for reference.  That the seat assignments don't go to AA and that this has been a "known issue" for sometime and then they have to deal with the upset passenger.  As I said I will not trust flights on AA anymore.

I think the issue is with AA Vacations. I usually fly AA and have yet to have a seating issue BUT I am an AA frequent flyer and manage my flights weekly to watch for plane and time changes. Flying on BA is another challenge as they do not assign confirmed seats until check-in unless you are high in their program tiers.

  7. Lots of key hints for me especially about taking an extra 2 weeks of meds (and undies), and the importance of having a mobile phone that works without wifi wherever you are traveling.  I need to double check our insurance for covid coverage.

  8. I would love to stay in Chichester and go to their wonderful theatre, explore the Roman ruins at Fishbourn, wander around the cathedral and the town's art galleries then hire a car and visit the coastal wetlands and Weald and Downland Living Museum. https://www.wealddown.co.uk

You know this is primarily for medical coverage, correct? You will not have any protection against cancellation and a minimal amount for trip interruption. That leaves you at risk if you encounter covid-related delays such as a positive covid test or quarantine.

Yes. We also have the Princess platinum insurance. GeoBlue also covers pre-existing conditions and can be purchased up to one day prior to trip beginning.
