Cool Cruiser

Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. We are NOT hikers! We are going on the Helicopter Glacier Trek. I asked the person on the phone the difference between the 1 hour vs 2 hour time frame on the glacier and its just that, longer time frame to walk on explore the glacier. There is no ice climbing, or trekking to remote places. Their website is great!
  2. We are booked with NorthStar Helicopters for a tour in Juneau in June. It includes the helicopter ride and 2 hours hike on the glacier. They got great reviews. When I called to book, they answered all my questions and were great on the phone! www.northstartrekking.com Good luck!
  3. Yeah, they could use the pool and hot tub, but I would feel sad that they couldn't experience the spring, and stand there and watch us, LOL. May just have to go back up to do the Northern Lights when my boys are old enough
  4. We are fishing for salmon with Alaska Strike Zone Sportfishing in June. They got great reviews everywhere. They do have Halibut charters as well. Happy fishing and tight lines!
  5. Doing a cruisetour that starts in Fairbanks in June. The family and I are going up 4 days early, one to acclimate to the time change (we're from South Florida) and also to explore on our own. I booked a car on Turo (Airbnb of cars), cheaper than the rentals at the airport. The tour includes the Riverboat Discovery cruise. I booked Running Reindeer Ranch and Gold Dredge 8 to fill up the days. Also going to go to Pioneer Park. Really wanted to go to Chena Hot Springs, but my boys are 15 and not allowed in the spring. Can't wait to get there!
  6. Hi all! We are heading to Alaska in June, can't wait!!! The hubby and I both got waterproof hiking shoes. I got some Merrills and he got Red Heads. My 15 y/o boys didn't want any, so I'm going to spray their shoes. Anyone have a particular favorite spray or the best working one? Thanks!!

    Fairbanks

Hi there! We too are doing a land tour/cruise through Princess and we are coming in 3 days prior as well to explore! Going to rent a car through Turo (kinda like airbnb for cars - cheaper than rental companies). Would love to have gone to Chena Hot Springs, but my boys are 15 y/o and not allowed in the hot spring. We improvised and I found Running Reindeer Ranch, a tour hour tour in a forest where the reindeer walk freely. They are tame but not trained. Located in Fairbanks.
  8. In Icy Strait Point we are in port from 6:00 AM - 7:00 PM in June 2023 with Princess. We booked with Hoonah Travel as well. Because of the 11 hours in port, we are doing 2 excursions with them. A bear search excursion from 7:30 - 10:30 AM and then Whale Watching excursion from 2:30 - 5:30. In between we'll get lunch or explore. Icy Strait Point has one of the highest densities of brown bears in the world. I can't wait to get to Alaska!!!
  9. Hi there! Doing our first Alaskan trip in June of 2023. We are doing a cruisetour with Princess Cruises. I figured that if I'm going all the way out there, try to get as much done as possible! We are doing a 5 day land tour and 7 day cruise. The land tour starts in Fairbanks. We are flying in early Saturday (1:30 AM) even though our land tour truly doesn't start until Tuesday. This gives us a few days in Fairbanks to acclimate to the time change (we're from Florida) and to explore Fairbanks as well. I have a salmon bake, gold mining, and reindeer ranch activities planned. On Tuesday we go on a riverboat excursion in Fairbanks and then travel down to the Denali Princess Lodge. Wednesday doing a Natural History tour in Denali National Park. Thursday we take the glass dome rail down to Talkeetna and go to the Mt. McKinley Princess Lodge. Friday we head down to Anchorage for the day. On Saturday we head to the port in Whittier stopping at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center enroute. Boarding the cruise on Saturday, here is our itinerary: Sunday - Hubbard Glacier Monday - Glacier Bay National Park Tuesday - Icy Strait Point - 2 excursions planned - 3 hour bear search and 3 hour whale watching Wednesday - Juneau - Doing helicopter flight and 1 hour walking around on a glacier Thursday - Ketchikan - 4 hour salmon fishing excursion Friday - Day at sea Saturday - Vancouver We are supposed to leave that Saturday night to come back home to Florida. I cannot wait! My advice is do a lot research as ships offer so many different things! The boards here on cruise critic are so helpful and knowledgeable when helping with decisions. Good luck and have fun!
  10. Doing a Princess cruisetour planned for June 2023. 5 day land tour and 7 day cruise. Starts in Fairbanks, Denali Lodge, Mt. McKinley Lodge, Anchorage, and then Whittier to the port. Cruise is Hubbard Glacier, Glacier Bay, Icy Strait Point, Juneau, and Ketchikan. Heading 3 days earlier to spend a few more days in Fairbanks. Plenty of excursions and activities scheduled, some with the tour and some on my own. It truly is a great way to see Alaska!
  11. May I ask which company you used? I too am looking for a whale watching/bear search excursion in ISP. I've heard some tours just drive you around searching for bears and another has you walk on a boardwalk to viewing platforms. How did the company you used do the bear search as I mentioned above? Thank you for your response!
  12. Thank you for your response. In Ketchikan we are doing a fishing excursion as my husband and I love fishing. What tour did you do in ISP?
  13. Thank you ABQrobin! May I ask which bear excursion tour or company you used? Or did you book excursion from cruiseline? I saw a few tours that will just drive around for a few hours searching for bears and I saw another tour that you walk on a boardwalk to viewing platforms. TIA for your response! 🙂
  14. Can you tell me more about the bear search part of your excursion please? We want to do a bear search and some companies will drive you around for hours looking for bears and then I also heard that you can walk on a boardwalk to viewing platforms. I was looking at Hoonah Travel Adventures and Icy Strait Whale Adventures. Thank you for any response.
