1. I think RCI's decision to put Captain Per on Mariner and have him spend some time with Captain Johnny ensured that they would not worry.

Interesting about how posters have noted that the older ships are harder to maneuver than the Voyager/Freedom/Oasis class vessels.

If you ever have a chance to see the show Mighy Ships on the Discovery channel it is really cool. They had Freedom and Oasis on before.

  2. This is all too funny. I have to agree with most posters that RCCL takes the job of the Captains and the safety of its guest very seriously. They don't take any short cuts. All their captains are very experienced and dependable that is why some get promoted fast. Captain Zini is a good example. Captain Johnny went from Mariner to Allure and no one had doubts about his experience. Grimstad is also very experienced and always makes the right call when it ones to passenger safety. We missed a stop a Cocoa Cay due to bad weather, he did not want to take any chances. Good call I say.

Also, some of the older and smaller ships are harder to maneuver compared to the Freedom or Oasis Class. You have masters on rotation on smaller sips that were once Captains on Oasis. Captain Thore now on Jewel and Captain Tor Olsen on Freedom (who currently works and rotates with Grimstad on Freedom). So I think the entire fleet work well together and are very dependable.

  3. Somewhere along the way here I may have completely blown it by mentioning Hall 2 at Meyer Werft. The Aida ships were indeed built in Hall 5, and some parts of the NCL Breakaway and Getaway as well. With that said I think Lloyd had posted some pictures here of Hall 5 with the Sonne. Along side of the Sonne were several blocks that seemed too big or many for the research vessel Sonne. So now that I have corrected at least my mistake about a Hall 5 instead of Hall 2, the guesses that some of those blocks could also be Quantum may be correct.

  4. Here's the latest video that I have found of a very recent visit to Hall 6 at Meyer Werft (I believe that it's last week - according to the video owner's reply to a comment I made in YouTube):

The Getaway is definitely parked nose up against the doors. If there is anything being done with Quantum of the Seas blocks, it is being done behind it (and next to it, as we can see), and possibly in another hall.

It appears as if there are now (at least) three of the semi-circular blocks.

They've done some work on them as well.

Remember: These blocks may be upside down.

Here is a MW Hall 5 video by the same person. Maybe some Quantum of the Seas blocks there as well ?;)

There are also some videos by this person of Quantum keel blocks being towed on the River Ems toward Meyer Werft on May 3 and 16, 2013.

Very cool stuff. Good quality video.

  5. I know it was mentioned earlier in this post, including pictures, that a complete ship and part of another can be built in the one dock at any given time. I found this website, http://www.buildinggetaway.ncl.com/ and it looks like Getaway was built towards the front, and floated back. So I'm wondering if they might be starting to lay block in the front of Getaway? I'm definitely excited to see it get started.

Getaway was built in the back of Hall 6 and floated forward. If you go back and look at the building of Breakaway you will see part of Getaway in the back of Breakaway. Other parts of Getaway were also built in Hall 2 that had Aida Stella. Meyer Werft has not shown the Webcam of Hall 2 since Aida Stella departed the hall. So who knows what is going on back there? When you open the link below, the picture in the webcam before you click "READ MORE" is Aida Stella in Hall 2 with parts of Geatway on the side I believe.

  6. I have heard they are also preparing Captain Dahlgren for Quantum. That's one of the reasons he's one of the current masters for Oasis... to get him prepared for the move

Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Forums mobile app

Chris - Thanks for pointing that out. Assuming he is still on the Oasis on my August sailing maybe I will ask him. Who knows he may just tell us.

By the way thanks for the picture of the Oasis JS you sent me via another thread. I am looking forward to the JS hump balcony next month.

  7. To: Karen , Travelgoddess1,

I am not a troll, just someone with inside info.

Like Grimstad is going to Allure. ....

Had Grimstad on Freedom this past March. He is a very nice and friendly guy and stops to speak with the passengers when possible. He did a nice commnetary to show how FOTS pulls into St Thomas in a tight space.

Witnessing the maneuver was very cool.

Since you have inside info, who will be the first Master of Quantum?

  8.
I have a really dumb question and wondering if I'm missing something on the deck plans but can someone tell me where the main dining room is located?
Not a dumb question at all. RCI has not revealed it yet, but most here are guessing it would be at the aft of decks 3 and 4.
  9. Thanks for reading the reviews, glad you like them. Panasonic makes some solid cameras, but I think the NEX tops any pany I've ever had. Good luck on your camera search.

Have fun on your cruise :)

Gambee - Could not find the NEX -F3 but I was able to find this weekend Sony NEX-3NB. It was an open box item at Best Buy for $395. Just started to test and play with it. Has a whole lot more than my Panasonic Lumix. I am also trying to find a deal on the lens, Sony 55-210mm e-mount. Any suggestions? Thank you.

  10. What's up with the Getaway? Angle got tighter to the ship and now excludes the bow. Plus, there is some sheeting blocking the front. Can't tell if it wraps around the section below the bridge or is draped in a manor to block out what the camera could not.

    2013_07_22_Halle_6_W466.jpg

I mentioned several days ago that if they keep zooming in they will soon be inside the Getaway Bridge :)

I think the cover in front maybe because they are now painting the bow. Parts of the front was covered on 7/2 but taken out on 7/16 from pictures I saw.

  11. I already know about it. No need for confirmation. I just thought I'd point out why the website has no validity in many ways. I realize, as do you, that RCI won't be making an "official" announcement. They've never made official announcements when captains are no longer with the company for whatever reason.

You know where to find me.

    :)

Gina - With that said I will leave this topic alone. You have been around CC way longer than people like me and may have a lot more insight with such things. Thank you.

  12. A lot of things aren't quite accurate at the RCI website. It's been almost a year since Capt. Bill has even held the position in that link. Even those questions are a bit outdated. The page obviously hasn't been updated in a long time.

    Gina

Very true Gina. But you would think if he was fired as some keep saying (see thread about who will be the next Captain of Quantum) the site would have been updated. I have a hard time believing he was fired. He is one of the best in the fleet. I hope he is still around.

  13. This story was posted earlier by another member but the thread was removed by Admin. So I am posting it again hopefully in the proper manner.

The attached articles talks about Port Canaveral will be building a new cruise terminal which may be ready late 2014 and would be able to handle ships up to 6000 passengers, with a length of up to 1400ft. Sounds like Oasis Class or Quantum Class may head to PC as home port maybe.

  14. Thanks for reading the reviews, glad you like them. Panasonic makes some solid cameras, but I think the NEX tops any pany I've ever had. Good luck on your camera search.

Thanks. People use to ask why I take pictures of everything but since I shared your review with my household they now get it. I am inspired to take better pictures on my second and upcoming Oasis cruise. I am sure I missed something the first time.
