  1. We did that cruise in September. Getting off was very hectic. We did not do express with our own bags ..but did have first tags with our Platinum status. Traffic was very bad that day for some reason. They suggested we use the HOHO bus rather than try to take a taxi. We were spending another night in Copenhagen so we’re not in a rush but I am sure that it would have been difficult that day to be in town by 9.

  2. I agree with Greek islands for warm weather ..although I have never gone to a beach there. The islands are beautiful and the people have been very friendly. We love to wander around shopping and taking photos. I think an itinerary out of Venice to the Greek isles is a great first choice for a European cruise. You can DIY several ports so will not have exorbitant excursion costs and Venice is also a wonderful walkable city..with the exception of arriving and departing. Water taxis are expensive but we found it worth the cost both for the convenience and experience. [emoji4]

  3. Yes, you can book it as many times as you like. On my upcoming 9 day cruise, I've booked it for 3 of the nights.

Thanks! We have never tried that restaurant before so I think that sounds good. :) We already have been on the Escape and the entertainment wasn’t my favorite so we won’t be so time crunched trying to get shows in.

  4. We are taking the ship's transfer to Stockholm and back for our day there. We want to start off near the Vasa and Abba museums and then ferry over to the old town area. I do not know where the ship transport is going to drop us off so it is hard to plan the day but from what I am reading our best bet will be to use the public transportation rather than HOHO (they are usually too slow) to get around.

If I could purchase our 24 hour passes online ahead of time (from the U.S.) I would love to have that out of the way. Is that a possibility?

  5. I am planning to do this mostly for the fact I think we can safely enjoy as much time as possible on our own in Stockholm..

If anyone has experience or advice ..I have the following questions..

Where is the drop off? We want to start in the area of the Vasa and Abba museums.

How do we get from that area to the old town, shopping area?

Where does the ship pick up for return?

Also, any suggestion on how much krona we may need for lunch, etc if taking ship transfer there and back?

  6. No. It's a 21 minute direct ride to Rostock. Getting to Schwerin requires a change at Rostock.

You can even pre-book tickets here: https://www.trainline.eu/trains/warnemunde/rostock-hbf?gclid=CM2hya_TjtQCFQIG0wod_cQGGg&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CPXEzK_TjtQCFYOIdwodRR4Alg

Thanks so much! I heard two different things initially. It sounds doable for sure. Were there any shops/restaurants you found that you would recommend in either Rostock or Warnemunde?

  7. I was a bit insulated from that as I had a guide with me. However, the conductors all spoke fluent English, as did all the shop assistants/museum people we encountered.

The train announcements weren't in English, but they were so clear that there was no problem detecting which station you were at. I was able to tell when we arrived at Rostock/Schwerin without the guide needing to tell me. I was also able to order coffee and cakes at a shop without the guide.

Thank you. Did you have to change trains at all to get to Rostock from Warnemunde?

  8. The train to Rostock was very simple. The Warnemunde train station is about 5 minutes walk from where the Getaway docked, and you can't really miss it if you are getting off the ship. Follow the water round, keeping it on your right, and in 5 minutes you have to cross the train tracks - the station is on your left. There are self-service machines and an office to help you.

The journey itself is quick and the announcements for each station are clear. There is also a conductor on board who can assist you. The only thing to note is that many of the smaller stations are tagged with the main station name in addition to their own, so you'll start seeing 'Rostock' on station signs before you actually get to Rostock station - however, they are very clear when you reach the main station so just hang on until you see plain 'Rostock' on the sign.

It was very straightforward, and we all enjoyed Rostock.

    Hello,

Did you have any trouble with not speaking German doing this on your own? Was the information and the train announcements also in English?

  9. Hello,

I downloaded an app to my phone called DB Navigator as suggested in another post. I was trying to look up the "Plan your trip" area but there are several stations in both Warnemunde and Rostock so I am not sure which to choose in planning.

Also, someone mentioned you could purchase tickets good for 24 hours of train travel ahead of time so I am interested in learning about this as well. One website I saw mentioned a "group" ticket for up to 5 passengers. We have 4 in our group so is that a better option? I remember when we went to Italy some of the websites with online tickets were charging a "surcharge" but the regular trenatalia website did not do that so if there is a better site for ticket purchase that would be good to know.

I want to spend time in both of these cities - taking photos, shopping, having a nice lunch. If anyone has restaurant recommendations for Rostock I would be interested in that as well. Something mid-range with good German food and beer/wine.

We will be on the Norwegian Getaway docking on September 11th. We are in port until 10:00 PM that night. I am wondering how long the shops will be open in Warnemunde that day at that time of year?

Thanks in advance for any info.

    :)

  10. Another company you might want to consider for shore excursions is Alla Tours. They do all of the ports on the Getaway's itinerary and you can pick and choose which ones you take. You get a discount on various ones if you also do their St Petersburg Tour. Definitely much much cheaper than the NCL tours, and I'm going on them with a group from my roll call.

I leave for this cruise in 14 days, so if there's anything particular you want to know - happy to try and make a note of it while I'm there.

In terms of the bar bill, you will almost certainly have received one or more of the free promotions when you booked. This doesn't always appear when booking but is then automatically given to you and will appear in your MyNCL account. Worth checking to see if the drinks package was what you were given. If not, just call NCL and ask if you can switch to that one (assuming you prefer it to whatever you got). I tend to alternate between free speciality dining or the drinks package depending on where I plan to eat. Definitely good value from them.

Will you be going to Rostock by chance? I would love to hear experiences taking the train there.

  11. It is very difficult to predict the weather in Northern Europe. We did a Baltic cruise starting in mid September and had fantastic, sunny weather for the two weeks. In fact, in Tallin it was a bit too hot, around 32c.

Oh, that sounds perfect to me. :) I will hope that we enjoy the same warm streak that you did. Of course I will plan for layering just in case but will be on that balcony no matter what. ;)

Thanks to the other poster about the blanket idea as well!

  12. We will be on NCL's Getaway 9/10 to 9/19. We have a balcony but I'm wondering what we might expect weather wise at that time of year. I'm hoping even if I need to wear a down jacket that I can enjoy some time on my balcony (when we are actually on the ship anyway). Any experience with temps at that time of year?
