  1. Is there a really big price drop for cruises that depart in September and October that lures passengers to sail during hurricane season? Is the savings worth the risk of cancelled ports and changes in itinerary? And do people who take the risk, are they aware of the consequences that may be associated with a price reduction?

I like cruising at this time of year because of the reduced fares, and also because this seems to be the time when work settles down and my wife and I can go.

I know that hurricane season risks changed ports and itineraries, but I learned a long time ago not to worry about things that I cannot control. That is advice I give to every new cruiser. Something on your vacation will not go according to plan. Don't worry or stress about things out of your control, just sit back and have a drink. You're on vacation.

  2. Hi all! First time Carnival cruiser here, my wife and I are going to celebrate our first anniversary in mid September on the Carnival Paradise.

We are very confused by the times given for arrival/departure.

    Grand Cayman - Arrival 8am - departure 3pm

    Cozumel - Arrival 11 am - departure 8pm

What time zones are these times? We leave Tampa Florida at 4pm, so I am assuming eastern, but I wanted to be sure before we book an excursion. Thank you!

Everyone answered your question really well. I just wanted to say: HAVE FUN ON YOUR FIRST CRUISE!

Remember: Relax and have fun. Things will go wrong or not to plan. Just roll with the punches and you'll have a great time. You're only a blue card once! :)

  3. If you fly to IAD is actually in Virginia, about 30ish miles away from Washington. If you fly into Dulles, you'll be about 1.5-2 hours away from Baltimore. A cab is going to cost you hundreds of dollars and you'll be stuck in some of THE WORST traffic in the states.

There are shuttles to get you from IAD to BWI. It involves getting on a bus to the Metro Train (subway), then taking the subway to Penn Station in DC; then getting on an actual train and going to BWI. HUUUUUUUGE PITA.

Time is money. Pay the extra money and fly into BWI. You'll save yourself in patience and time.

  4. The Victory will always hold a special place in my heart, because it is the first ship my wife-to-be (57 days) and I took our first cruise.

I was on her last year, and we both had an extremely wonderful time. I actually really like the tiered Lido deck, because it means everyone isn't on top of each other on one deck.

We didn't get to experience the Serenity area, sadly, because by 8am it was over run with CHAIR HOGS!

Though I had the same experience you did with the piano bar. It was never really busy. We could easily get a seat, which I thought was odd.

For our honeymoon we'll be on the Conquest, which has 2.0 upgrades, which we are looking forward to trying out :)

  5. We normally save by booking inside, not getting a drink package and not doing a lot of excursions.

We splurge on shopping, bar hopping, and food in the port.

We skip the drink package because we do most of our drinking off of the ship. We like to walk around, take in the cities and do some shopping. All part of the fun.

  6. Wow. Two kids on your own. You are brave.

Just thinking on the fly here:

you could ask one of the crew members on the deck to give you a quick hand. People on the boards here may chime in and say "that isn't their job", but whatever, helping you for a few minutes isn't going to sink the ship.

Is the 5 year old responsible enough to follow you in the buffet line and hold his own plate while you scoop some food onto it while you handle food for you and the 2? I don't have kids so I don't know, just asking.

Other than that hit the MDR for as many meals as you can.

Don't be afraid to ask people for a hand. If I was eating food next to you, or was in line behind you and you asked if I could give you a quick hand scooping some food for carrying a tray or something I absolutely would. The worst people can say is no.

  7. I'm sure most people put lots of time and thoughts into their reviews, but I NEVER read them. I like going on vacations with an open mind, without taint. That, and the fact that opinions are subjective.

I look for the fun in everything, and I usually find it, but then I'm an extroverted optimistic type of person.

Having said that, I'd say that the Splendor was a fun ship, I had a ball. I think you and your family will also!
