Dajo5601 Posted October 7, 2017 #1 Share Posted October 7, 2017 Some time ago I put a thread on this board asking for thoughts on a trip to Murano Island when in Venice as this was to have been our sixth visit in the past six years. In all honesty the response was pretty negative with various comments advising that it was mainly a commercial set-up and not worth the visit. As one of our friends in our party of four had set his heart on seeing the glass blowing, we did take the trip as advertised and sold on board the QE. A nice clean boat with an open-air top deck (lovely sunny day so this was a bonus) berthed next to the QE. Nice ride out to Murano and our guide was excellent as she commentated the whole of the time pointing out every building and area of interest. Once inside the glass factory, yes, I can see why it could be described as a "commercial set-up", but our visit started with an excellent demonstration of glass-blowing followed by a visit into the retail section. Most goods appeared to be over-priced and therefore, we didn't buy anything. Now, after we left Murano, a lovely 40 minute sail across the Venice Lagoon on an open top boat to the beautiful island of Burano. What a fantastic surprise this was, a lovely island, colourful, lively and vibrant and well worth every penny that we'd paid for the trip. Following two hours on Burano we had another fantastic journey back to the ship, via a different route and again our wonderful guide was so informative. Not usually a fan of the ship's cruises, but, with the right guide, with the right weather, this trip was worth every penny and Burano is a must. David. robbie_3 Posted October 7, 2017 #3 Share Posted October 7, 2017 Glad to hear your positive experience. Like you we visited these islands on a Cunard trip and found them quite enchanting with the colourful buildings and quality hand made lace shops. We also found the glass factory fascinating but got caught at the end buying overpriced seconds which when we got them home proved to be very inferior quality glass. That aside the Cunard trip we felt was good value.
