Best way to rent a car after disembarking from my Princess cruise

We want to rent a car coming straight off our cruise on the Caribbean Princess from a rental place near the terminal we will be docked at, then if possible return it to the airport when we go to catch our flight. We have 5 hours to kill. Here some questions:

  1. What is the nearest rental place?
  2. Can you walk to it?
  3. Can you return it to FLL Airport?
  4. Is it better to go to FLL and rent then return back to FLL to return?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The far better place for your research would be the Florida Departures board, here:

where there are many dozens of threads on car rental options and procedures. As this has nothing to do with Princess, the mods will probably move it there.

Generally, there are no rentals within walking distance of the port. But several of the companies have shuttles. In 99% of the cases you can rent at one, and return to another.

We have used the Budget at 1515 SE 17th St, which is only a half mile away from your terminal. Easy walking on sidewalks or use their free shuttle. Decent rates for one-way rentals, with drop off at FLL.

We've also done the reverse direction as well.

As Mingus said, Budget is walkable - about 3 blocks if you are at terminal 2. Avis and Hertz have a pickup if you arrange your car through the Avis Hilton or Hertz Pier 66 but if there are a lot of ships in port these can be packed. Others have reported that there is an airport rental pickup at the pier, but we haven't done that. Book your car with town pickup and dropoff at the airport.

If you rent a car at ANY airport the rental car company tacks on an airport rental fee. But they do have more agents and process you faster. Cars are in the airport parking garage for both pickup and dropoff.

The Avis Hilton location usually only has one person processing rentals so it can take a while and a tight lot so you car could be blocked in for a few minutes.

  1. What is the nearest rental place?

Budget - 1515 SE 17th Street - behind the Renaissance Hotel.

  1. Can you walk to it?

Yes, if you are at Terminal 2, which is most likely on Princess, but why would you when you could take the free shuttle?

  1. Can you return it to FLL Airport?

Yes and there is no drop charge.

  1. Is it better to go to FLL and rent then return back to FLL to return?

No, that would be dumb.

Thanks in advance for your help.

It would be best to reserve you car in advance, otherwise you probably won't get a car by just walking in.

Thanks for all the great info.

I see a few people have mentioned a free shuttle, I assume that shuttle is supplied by Budget?

If so where do you go to catch the shuttle?

Yes, it was a Budget shuttle that ran continuously.

We caught it just outside of terminal 2, at a traffic island where all the different shuttles dropped off & picked up.
