Getting to and from Southhampton U.K. Cruise Port from Paris

So many tempting cruises start or end in Southhampton. I live in Paris and would like to book something, but am afraid that getting to the boat is complicated. have not yet found really detailed and practical information on getting to Southhampton, where to stay if I get there early, and things to know about the distance of the cruiseport to public transportation- air, rail ground.

Could some of you seasoned travellers please help me.

I was hoping to find something similar to this handy guide to getting to the main U.S. airports: DIRECTIONS TO THE PIER http://www.paulscruises.com/directions.html

Ft Lauderdale(Port Eveerglades), Galveston, Houston, Miami, New Orleans, New York, Orlando, San Diego, San Juan, Tampa

Hi Fred,

Simplest & quickest is by air - take the RER from Gare Du Nord to Paris CDG airport, then Flybe or AirFrance (Flybe will be a lot cheaper) direct to Southampton airport SOU. Flight take a little under 1 hour.

From SOU airport a taxi to any cruise terminal costs about £20. Or the U1 bus is very frequent and very cheap but travels a circuitous route. Or the frequent train from SOU airport to Southampton Central station. From the bus stop or central train station to your cruise ship might be walkable depending which cruise terminal.

Or by Eurostar train from Gare du Nord to London's St Pancras station.

Then direct train from London's Waterloo station or direct National Express bus from London's Victoria coach station to Southampton.

St Pancras station is on the north side of central London and both Waterloo & Victoria are on the south side of central London. So you will need either a taxi £20?) or the underground metro, known as The Tube.. Like the Paris metro, the tube is no fun with a lot of luggage.

Or by ferry.

Train from St Lazare to Le Havre, short taxi ride, ferry (Brittany Ferries) to Portsmouth, then direct National Express bus to Southampton.

There are plenty of hotels in Southampton city centre, convenient for the cruise terminals & train and bus stations.

Most of them on this list:

A few cruises start from Le Havre.

If your last port-of-call is Le Havre or Zeebrugge (Bruges), mebbe even Amsterdam, ask the cruise line in advance whether you can disembark the ship at that port rather than next day in Southampton - that would probably be easier.

JB :)

Eurostar for sure...it's less hassle.Remember to check in at least an hour before your train departs.

Other posters have covered London to Southampton

Try and book a hotel either overlooking the harbour or near the mayflower theatre/polygon area. This is near the Quay shopping centre if you need any bits and also near the sea city museum and many bars and restaurants. There is also a massive park nearby for that great British summer relaxing.

A taxi will take less than 10 minutes from the Polygon area and can be booked even on cruise morning. When you depart the cruise there will be many taxis there anyway to take you a short ride to the bus station or train station. Taxis will cost you around £10ish but thats including the entering port fee.
