shall1949 Posted January 12, 2018 #1 Share Posted January 12, 2018 We'll be on the Rhine Getaway in September, 2018. We've signed up for the shore excursion from Breisach to Colmar for the WWII Museum and Memorial. We'd like to simply stay in Colmar after the excursion; make our OWN medieval Colmar tour; then return to the boat via public transportation in time for a late dinner. Has anybody tried this? Any advice would be appreciated.
Rare Keith1010 Posted January 12, 2018 #2 Share Posted January 12, 2018 Welcome to Cruise Critic. There is a board specific to River Cruising which I would recommend you post this on and this link will take you there: https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=-1&f=191 Keith
Capt_BJ Posted January 12, 2018 #3 Share Posted January 12, 2018 in general I'd say this would be fine BUT you need to be aware of when the boat will continue its trip. It is not uncommon for the boat to MOVE while you are on an excursion ... IME it was not unusual to leave the boat for an excursion and then the excursion met the boat someplace else at the end. IME this was MORE common for 'optional excursions' too ...... So if you choose to do this a) be sure to tell the excursion folks so they don't wait for you and b) BE SURE to know where and when you can rejoin the boat. Getting to the pier to find only water is usually a bummer!
Host Walt Posted January 13, 2018 #4 Share Posted January 13, 2018 Several years ago we spent a week exploring the Voges mountains and stayed in a delightful small hotel for 3 nights in Colmar. The town is small and the folks are very congenial and were happy to help us itinerant Yanks. There are some very nice small restaurants and bistros if you decide to skip the dinner on board.
