We are booked on a cruise from Singapore to Dubai in March of next year. We are considering visiting Malaysia for a few days while in Singapore.

Has anyone done this?

Here is a tour that looks interesting, as well as the train from Singaport to Kuala Lumpur:

$ 262.60 19th and 20th March

Day 1: Singapore – Malacca (L)

After pickup from your Singapore hotel in the morning, enjoy a relaxing train ride across the causeway and into the state of Johor, passing through the rural countryside and fruit and vegetable plantations along the way.

Disembark in the city of Kluang and continue the rest of your journey to the state of Malacca by coach. You’ll arrive in time for lunch followed by a historical walking tour of Malacca City, whose city center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Discover Malacca’s history, culture, heritage and Dutch influences as you visit sites such as St Paul’s Hill, Porta De Santiago, Cheng Hoon Teng Temple and Jonkers Street, also known as Antique Street. Your knowledgeable guide will provide interesting information about the sites you visit.

For dinner, your guide will provide great recommendations on places to enjoy an authentic meal.

Overnight: 4-Star Hotel Equatorial or similar in Malacca

Day 2: Malacca -- Kuala Lumpur (B,L)

After breakfast, you’ll drive 2 hours north to Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. Your tour of this city will cover sites such as the National Palace, the National Museum, the National Monument (sculptured by the creator of the Iwo Jima monument in Washington, DC), the National Mosque, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and the Royal Selangor Club. You’ll also pass the Petronas Twin Towers, the two second-tallest buildings in the world!

You’ll be served an authentic Malaysian lunch at midday. At the end of the day, relax on the drive back to your Kuala Lumpur hotel, where your 2-day Malaysian experience will conclude.

It will be a lovely trip and a very relaxed one going by train.

Be prepared for a pretty full on immigration check when you cross the border. There is no problem , its just a very busy and intense checkpoint. A lot of Malaysians work in Singapore and cross the border daily. Duty Free is virtually non existant and they are on the lookout for any smuggled goods.

We did a day trip from Singapore to Johur and had to cross the causseway...the tour was nicknamed the Immigration tour.

We also called at Malacca on a cruise. A delightful gem .

We had a stop in KL on our recent cruise in January. We didnt go to Malacca but had a few hours in KL and also spent some time at the Batu Caves about 15 minutes north of the city centre. It's an interesting city but in my view does not compare to Singapore, which we loved.

It depends on how much time you have in Singapore - if you only have a few days I wouldn't take the time to go to KL, but if you have more than 3 or 4 days in Singapore then it would be worthwhile. Also it depends on your interests - if you like monuments, buildings and history you may really enjoy KL, we were not too excited by the city and found a quick whiz around was enough for us, but we really enjoyed our visit to the Batu caves.

Singapore on the other hand was sensational with so much to see and do, and we would have liked more time than the 3 days we had there. It's personal opinion and depends on your interests I guess.

Train is very interesting. We did it in the late 80"s. Flights are quick and cheap. Try Malayasian airways. Really good prices.

We were thinking of taking a tour that ended in KL then taking the night train back to Singapore.

Is the train in good shape? Does it have a restaurant car?
