Rare Colin_Cameron Posted November 29, 2004 #1 Share Posted November 29, 2004 I've been looking at the itinerary for the Hawaiian trip and the first thing to jump out at me is that she sails from a US port, visits 3 US ports and returns to a US port. Where is the "distant foreign port"? Is she somehow exempt from the Passenger Services Act (sometimes inacurately referred to as the Jones Act)? Or have they just decided to pay the fines/penalty and built it into the price? Or am I missing something? Regards, Colin.
Phoenix cruiser Posted November 29, 2004 #2 Share Posted November 29, 2004 Apparently the PSA is no longer in force. Note that NCL and others have also instituted totally within Hawaii cruises. Don't know what will become of that lovely Micronesia island we visited on NCL in 2002, the islanders lived off the cruise ship visits.
Calliope Posted November 29, 2004 #3 Share Posted November 29, 2004 I'm sure that the QM2 will slow down as she passes Ensenada, radio in her information, pay the required fees and continue on towards Hawaii. It's a flagrant violation of the spirit of the American laws. Afterall the Passenger Vessel Service Act is still the law of the land, and this loop hole will probably never be addressed by Congress. The new Norwegian vessel sailing around Hawaii is American flagged and manned. Congress allowed a foreign flagged vessel to be redocumented in America untill the somewhat American built PRIDE OF AMERICA can be brought out of the shipyard. Originally Norwegian had hoped that she would come out in July of this year, and now it is next July when she enters service.
