Cost of pub meal in Southampton?

Recommended Posts

Arriving in early June for cruise from Southampton.staying for 3 nights in Southhampton and hoping to do a day trip to Isle of Wight. Would it be better to try to get a tour from Southhampton or do independent ferry and then a tour or public bus.? Some mobility issues so would like to keep it as simple as possible but also not break the bank! Thanks for any advice

I had a look for coach tours but there seems to be very limited availability. The best plan might be to take the ferry as foot passengers and hire a car. The island is very laid back, but the roads are mostly narrow. You wouldn't want a big car :)

There is a good bus service and even a train, which uses secondhand London Underground carriages.

This website should help: http://www.visitisleofwight.co.uk/travel/getting-around

Prices of pub meals vary a lot, depending on their customer base. You can find some offering two for £10 and some that would cost at least £20. (Assuming two courses) Menus are clearly posted so you can easily see before you choose. Lunch is always a better deal than dinner.

We loved the Duke of Wellington and the Platform. Both were reasonably priced with excellent food. If you're there on a Sunday the Sunday roast meals the the Platform are well worth the visit. Where are you staying?

I doubt you'll find an IoW day trip tour from Southampton because of low demand (Southamptonis not a tourist city) and the cost of putting a bus on the ferry.

But there are several ho-ho routes on the Island, and the ferry operator often offers combined ho-ho and ferry tickets.

I'm travelling at the moment & have only my IPad so you'll have to google Red Funnel Southampton and Southern Vectis Island Breezers.Try to include Godshill, Shanklin and Totland Bay/ Alum Bay.

Pub evening meals around £5 - £6 starters or desserts, £10 - £15 main course, cheaper meals lunchtime, wines start around £12 to £14 the bottle. No service charge, tips at your discretion - we usually give £5 but zilch if it's not up-to-scratch. To get a general idea, google for menus for Duke of Wellington Southampton or Bunch of Grapes Southampton or Platform Tavern Southampton or Cowherd's Inn Southampton.

The Standing Order Southampton is aWetherspoon's pub - the chain is known for acceptable but very unremarkable food and their prices are consequently lower.

Are these restaurants you have mentioned as having good Pub Food close to the Cruise Port Terminal or close to any specific Hotel in Southampton? We will be staying 1 night pre-cruise in Southampton and have not yet booked our pre-cruise Hotel. Looking for suggestions of reasonably priced Hotels near the Port with good British Pub restaurants in walking distance for a nice Dinner meal. We will be overnighting on a Sunday so the roast beef meal sounds very enticing!

Platform and Duke of Wellington are in easy walking distance of the Grand Harbour Hotel which is a wonderful hotel, too. There's a new brew pub called The Dancing Man very near the Platform and is owned by the same people. We were there 2 yrs. ago shortly after it opened, and we enjoyed it, too, but the menu wasn't as extensive as the other two places. By now it may have changed.

Easier to answer if you tell us the name of your ship & sailing date.

Or if it's on this list, the terminal or berth number

You might check out the Red Lion Pub, a old historic pub located at 55 High Street, Southampton. Two lunches, each including salad, fish and chips and a pint, ran a total of about $30USD. This pub was built between the 15th and 16th century and its interior is furnished accordingly.

Thank You so much. I will add this to my trip folder info. Sounds wonderful, we love traditional British Pub food such as Fish & Chips. Hope to get some good recommendations for Hotels near the Port and restaurants such as this for our pre-cruise night. The Red Lion sounds very quaint and a perfect way to start off our British Isles cruise.
