What's the best way to make dinner reservations for Open Dining on Nieuw Amsterdam?

I know we can make dinner reservations for three nights at a time with Open Seating. I've read that there's a podium near the Canaletto where we can check which tables are open and make our reservations there. I've also read that we can dial #88 from our room to do the same.

Which is the better choice?
