We will be there for one day on a cruise [March 2010]

Decided not to take the long ride to Malacca...mistake???

Would appreciate any ideas and if you have toured privately with a guide, would appreciate his name/email.

Thank you Paula

We were in KL for a day in November on the Tahitian/Ocean Princess. We took a full day tour of KL offered by the ship. It was an hour or so from the port to KL. We were late getting back - about 15 minutes after on board time because of the traffic.

Did you enjoy your visit? What would you recommend seeing?

Depends on the cruise line you are on. We were on Star Virgo last October and did a ship tour. I think the cost was about $S45 each. We had a photo opportunity of the Blue Mosque, visited a chinese temple, went up the KL tower and then spent a couple of hours at a shopping centre. We felt we got good value for our money.

We were also struggling with going to Malacca from one of our port stops too and decided to do this from Singapore instead of KL, even though it is much longer to get there from Singapore. We have extra port days in Singapore so we won't have to worry about getting back to the ship on time.

For anyone else considering Malacca, there are almost hourly Singapore-Melaka Express busses leaving from the Lavender Road bus station near the Lavender Road metro stop. It is four hours each way but it sounds like it goes through interesting scenery. A/C modern busses.

KL is just a one day stop for us too, so we too will rely on the ship's tour or else go out to those fishing islands close by. Still trying to decide.

Hi PaulaJK, I found this post of yours and was wondering who you used as a private driver? We are going to be there in Feb and would like to hire a car/guide. Also do you have any other recommendations for Vietnam?

...Vietnam: We hired a pvt driver/car/guide for Hue. We made stops at the beach and some factories along the way [our choices]...toured the

'town' and enjoyed a guide selected restaurant which overlooked the river for a wonderful lunch. On another day, we again went the pvt route to spend a day in the Mekong Delta. This involved lots of walking, a boat ride, oxen cart ride, some visits to families and small businesses, tea w. a musical performance and a very nice lunch. We thoroughly enjoyed both of these days touring and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

Sorry but I can't recall who we used and unfortunately didn't keep any back up info. We had found names of agencies on the web, communicated via email w. a few agencies, took pot luck and were satisfied. We used the same agency for 3 pvt tours...the delta [a must do], Hoi An et al and to Hanoi. Only our Hanoi guide was rather 'flat' but adequate and I thought that this might be a cultural difference in the north.

You might post a general inquiry re: guides for this area as most folks here keep that kind of info. Paula

  • 3 weeks later...

Kuala Lumpur is a very safe place to walk around by yourself, it is very westernised in the centre with some stupendous shopping malls (with good places to eat). Even if you venture into areas like China Town or Little India, you are totally safe. There is a hop-on-hop-off bus which will take you to all the major sights. It cost about £7.50 (sorry, I only remember what that was in pounds). You can find information and the route by googling it. (There is a stop on Bukit Bintang just down from the Pavilion shopping centre.) My favourite places were the Handicraft centre where you can have a go at making your own batik, the Central Market (for locally made handicrafts) and the Petronas Towers.
