No hair coloring services for women

Sorry for starting a new message thread, but I thought this topic deserved a call-out.

When we boarded in Istanbul, we went straight to the salon. We are multi-segment passengers and my wife wanted a color touch-up midway. We were told no coloring allowed on the ship due to issues with having/using the chemicals. She's hoping this was a misunderstanding so we are checking back on first sea day to confirm or deny what we were told.

FYI as of the first cruise there is one person doing women's haircuts and they are scheduling them 1 hour apart.

Here is an idea for your wife.

Give this request to the ship concierge .

I am sure they can help you find a salon in a port for a morning appointment. It would be pretty cool to go to a salon in Italy, Gibraltar, France or Spain. Get manicure and have a pedicure while she is there!

Hope it works out. I hate it when my roots grow out!:)

Leo - when we were docked in Pireas we went looking for a Pharmacy (yes I have a cold) and found hair coloring products in the two Pharmacies we visited. I think when we dock in Dubrovnik there's supposed to be a 'supermarket' right across the dock from us. Perhaps she could get some product there.

I too found their excuse about chemicals on board kinda lame. I've only been on Princess for big ocean cruises, but they do hair coloring. So I'm not quite buying the "were not allowed to have the chemicals on board" excuse. (For the rest of you, I was standing there when Leo asked and can verify what was said.) My guess is that the one haircut term doesn't know how to do color. Or they thought it would take up too much time for one person to handle both haircuts and coloring.

I think that's standard on cruise ships, and no perms or straightening either, IIRC. I love the idea of a shore excursion to a salon! That's a good idea for the cruise director or social hostess to start forging some relationships. Also maybe a good activity for the 50 day cruisers on turn-around day.

Went by to confirm whether what we told at check-in was true or not. The story now goes there is no coloring because the designers failed to put in exhaust ventilation in the salon specs and there are no windows that can be opened in the area. With the spa next door - big deal for the Norwegian management - they don't want hair coloring smells in the area.

They are having meetings about the topic and there may be some accommodation but no promises. There have been multiple multi-segment women passengers who have stopped by requesting hair coloring services.

She must bring her own hair color from home then, and do it herself. Maybe you could help. It is not hard. It appears to be the only alternative. Practice at home one time.

We're here on the ship. There is no second chance to go home and pack something to do ourselves.

As for the suggestion to use a salon ashore, if the ship could arrange such a service and escort my wife to and from she might consider it especially if the ship confirmed the shop had excellent English speaking skills or someone speaking the local language came with.

I can not imagine her agreeing to a scenario where she's not completely comfortable with the ashore arrangements because once it is done it's too late. Remember, she can't go to the salon on the ship to try to fix a botched treatment ashore.

I've never been on a cruise ship with coloring services, but I suppose if I ever go on one for more than a month, I'll just take a box of color.

Yes, there's a supermarket, in Gruz (Dubrovnik) at the cruise port. It's called Konzum and a picture is attached. I might be afraid to use Croatian product with instructions, but maybe they have some Clairol with American language instructions intact.

Oh, you might have to have kuna in case they don't accept credit cards, which I hear is sometimes the case in Croatia. Euros aren't often accepted, either, I hear. At least there are ATMs near the port, I hear.

Might be better to just go out in a port somewhere and visit a hair place for a few hours. At least they likely take credit cards, although some places in Europe require a card with PIN and/or chip.
