What happened to Commodore Enchanted Capri

Recommended Posts

About ten years ago I spent much time in Shreveport, LA working. I would go to the Isle of Capri casino there in town, where I spent way to much time playing blackjack. One day I recieved a letter in the mail from Commodore Cruise Lines on behalf of the Isle of Capri offering me a free 5 night cruise. I almost threw it away thinking it was some kinda timeshare scam, but ended up calling about it about a week later. Like I said it was a free cruise taxes and port charges all paid for, I must have asked a million questions to the booking agent on the phone. It turns out it was a comp from the Isle of Capri casino in Shreveport who also ran the casino aboard the Enchanted Capri. Needless to say I drove down to New Orleans and had a wonderful 5 days that has ever since fueled my cruiseing obsession. To make a long story short what ever happened to the Enchanted Capri and Commodore. Someone also told me MTV chartered the Enchanted Capri to Mexico for one of there spring break specials hosted by Tom Green.

My DH and I went on the Enchanted Capri 3 times ! We always had a great trip with a lot of memories, but on a couple of the cruises we had bad weather. On one we had VERY HIGH SEAS !! Waves crashing over the bow !! Water splashing out of the pools and porthole curtains being horizontal. I said after that one I was never going again, but when the Isle sent us the next free cruise, what do you know, we went ! We haven't been on a cruise in years. Those 3 times were all that we went on. We spent to much time in Shreveport. LOL. We have a cruise booked for December on the Conquest. My DH has wanted to go on the Conquest since she was new in New Orleans back when we went on the Enchanted Capri. So, finally after all these years we're going. I started reading the boards here to kinda get ready. Never thought I'd see anybody that was on the Enchanted Capri, but to answer your question, I read somewhere online that she went to the breakers and then I read somewhere else that she went to Ft. Lauderdale to be a casino ship called St. Tropez and it went broke so I'm not sure of her fate.

Enchanted Sun was built as Castalia in 1974 by Kynossoura Dock Yard Ltd, Kynossoura, Salamis. She was another stunning looking ship built for Hellenic Mediterranean Lines, even more so than the 1972 Aquarius. She worked on their main ferry route Brindisi-Patras until sold to Stena Gulf Line in 1988 and renamed Scandinavian Saga. She was chartered to SeaEscape for short cruises out of Florida until 1991. She has remained in similar use ever since, for a variety of owners, under the names Pride of San Diego, Tropic Star II, Stena Arcadia, Emerald Empress, Sofia, Enchanted Sun, Talisman and Manistal. She was bought by Commodore in 1999, but was laid up and sold in 2001. Since 2003 she has sailed out of Ft Lauderdale as the casino ship St Tropez.

We took a 7-day cruise on the CCL Inspiration from NOLA on Dec. 15 of 2001. It was a cruise I won while working as a TA, and we were originally scheduled for a 7-night Western on the Sensation from Tampa on...get ready...9-14-01. Well, that didn't happen! Airlines and CCL were very good to us, so we were able to re-schedule. For two years as a TA for a long-established brick and mortar agency, Commodore was a VERY POPULAR cruise, and we booked it very often, as NOLA was only a 5-hour drive from our office. Our clients would always get upgrades/comps/reduced rates., and cabin gifts....not to mentiom great service! We had clients who refused to cruise on any line except Commodore! Anyway, about 2000 or so, we were told that both ships were out of service. Bummer! So..at the NOLA pier in 12-01, I saw one of their ships anchored across the river, between a couple of rusty barges. Don't know if it was the Capri or Enchanted. Sad!! Other than that, I don't know what happened to either ship..or their crew.

The following snipped from a timeline page for the U.S.S. Argentina -- also known as the Enchanted Isle --

Posted 09 December 2003, from Alang, India:

The last U.S. built ocean passenger luxury liner that had been completed in 1958 and began her life as the S.S. Argentina, was beached today under a full moon at 0030 hrs. While the Angels of the Sea are holding her in their arms, she will be ripped apart.

Please keep your memories coming so that we may share them with the world. As long as there are those of us that are alive and remember her, she will not be forgotten.

I worked in the Casino on board the Enchanted Capri from July '98 until it went bust in 2000. We had to wait up to two months for our tickets home and over two years to receive our final paycheck. I still have many fond memories of my time on board - it's where i met my wife for one! The Capri itself is now a floating hotel for oil rigs in the gulf of Mexico (so google leads me to believe).
