Why Do People Wave In Pictures?

Pet peeve of mine. Why do people wave when they get their pictures taken? I make them stop beause I think it ruins the pictures. I thought I would see what others have to say. (this is because I am watching the travel channel right now and they are on a cruise ship. A couple was getting their picture taken and started waving:eek: )

FunFact:

It's my understanding that much of the early photography work was done in this fashion, with the subjects bearing a stoic expression. I've heard two different reasons as to why this was done in this fashion.

1) Photography was a much slower process back then and a subject would have to hold a pose much longer. A stoic expression was much easier to hold for that duration.

2) The subjects often had very bad teeth, if they had any teeth at all.;)
