chefbecky Posted March 2, 2009 #1 Share Posted March 2, 2009 We are planning our own Alaska land vacation followed by a cruise from Steward/Whitter to Anchorage. We would like a land tour or cruise excursion that would have the opportunity to see bears fishing for salmon. Does anyone know which months and where or what tour might include bears catching salmon?
wolfie11 Posted March 2, 2009 #2 Share Posted March 2, 2009 The salmon run from late June through mid-August usually. The best bet is to fly out of Anchorage or Homer to Katmai/Brooks Falls or one of those areas. This is where all the classic bear/salmon photos come from. Next best would be a trip out of Ketchikan to Neet's or Pack Creek. All are expensive. Don't go unless the salmon are running, as you will not see bears. Budget Queen Posted March 2, 2009 #3 Share Posted March 2, 2009 For inside passage viewing out of Ketchikan, peak will be about second week of August, through begining of Sept. But mostly black bear viewing. Pack Creek is browns, flown in from Juneau.
