Dream's Casino is mostly NON smoking...more to follow??

....... If I can now be there without the smoke then I would spend more time there.

Me too. I spent a total of around 15 minutes on my 7 day cruise in the casino. (Not counting the trips to the bar to get frozen drinks as my mom's favorite bar (in the main lobby area) could not make frozen drinks and the casino bar was the closest:D.)

That's what people were saying on here about "anytime dining" and jeans in the dining room.....LMAO!! Man I got slammed many times about those two subjects......

Don't you guys get it..........they don't just change things just for the sake of changing things.........they change for the majority.....afterall they are in a business;)

Exactly....IF you really read John Heald's blog, you can get a pretty good picture of what the top execs at Carnival are thinking and planning.

Example : he has been touting AIDA (the German subsidiary) a LOT lately

praising it's open plan...etc...and now the Dream has a more open plan that is different from the other ships in the fleet

He has had MANY comments recently about smoking..."keeping up with the times' etc....even posted that Carnival is paying to help it's workers quit smoking, many of them are from countries that smoke a lot it seems...

he even posted that HE thinks cabins should be NON smoking

He has posted that they will be following the trend

he posted that AIDA has only 2 areas to smoke in..both are indoor outdoor bars with a deck where smokers can go

he has posted that AIDA has more spa facilities...so does Dream

the writing is on the wall

I live in Florida and many people happily vacation here...most hotels and resorts are non smoking....all restaurants are...most every bar is non smoking unless you go to a very old grandfathered in dive bar or maybe an old irish workingman's bar....these are in industrial /commercial areas for the most part...I wouldn't step foot in one and I am Irish LOL

Maybe the really addicted smokers are the ones who have found the loopholes in cruising...?? I don't know...I know that there are outdoor areas for people to smoke...here the weather is pleasant all the time so it is not like they have to go out in the snow and smoke...if it rains there are covered areas

it would and could work on ships...

there are less and less smokers ...prices are so high people are quitting

Florida just tagged an extra buck or something on cigarettes...I saw the cheapest NO name brand at Publix is almost $6 a pack...ouch

California is the leader in this...for decades now they have not allowed smoking indoors! They have extended this to some beaches and parks now too

There are a scant few little penned in areas for smokers now at the Parks in Orlando...a few little places left to light up. ALL the Disney resorts there are non smoking. Most of the decent hotels are too

Pretty soon it will be MOtel 6 or a truck stop if you want to smoke in a hotel period

Canada now outlaws smoking in a vehicle with children under 16...by law..

Ireland and the UK have successfully outlawed smoking indoors..even in their famous pubs..even with their lousy weather LOL

Lots of places won't hire smokers now

There will be more laws and more rules and Carnival is ONLY following suit

"The times they are a changin"..

I bet some of the people staying at resorts and hotels here smoke..they just go outside on the patio where they can light up

The idea of smoking inside is so totally foreign to me at this point that it really grosses me out

Smokers don't have that "right" where I live

Non smokers don't worry about if the smokers are happy or not

I think most non smokers I know want more and more laws and rules

The most puzzling thing to me is that sooo many non smokers (ONLY on CC) seem to dedicate themselves to fighting for the right of others to smoke indoors on cruiseships...I don't get that at all

A cruise ship is different from a hotel in that a hotel can go totally non smoking and there is still a place for the smokers to go (outside). A cruise ship has nowhere for the smokers to go. So, there needs to be areas of the ship that allow smoking. I don't think a lot of smokers can wait to get to the next port to smoke.

But, there also needs to be an area in the casino which is non smoking.

John Heald this and John Heald that ???????????

Don't you people understand that all of this is his job, to tell people what they are wanting to hear. If you are a non smoker and you write to John complaining, he will give you some insight on what you want to hear, if you are s smoker and write to John and complain about not being able to smoke somwhere, he will give you some insight on what you want to hear. It has nothing to do with smoking alone, anything that is asked by anyone to John about any subject pretaining to Carnival Cruise Lines, he will tell you something in favor of what you are wanting to hear. IT IS HIS JOB!!!!!!!! What is so hard to understand about that.

So if we allowed smoking on airplanes they would be in better

financial shape?

I am a smoker, but there is no way that I would even want to lite up in such a confined area as a plan.

Food for thought on this also, I don't know anyone that has ever been confined inside a plane for 7 days, therefore this is no comparision!

Well, I am assuming that making the Dream casino more a non smoking venue than a smoking venue is a little more assuring of things to come than reading it in a blog.

True...and that is why they can and will limit the areas where smokers can smoke to get their nicotine fix, without annoying the majority who don't smoke

Years ago smoking in planes was standard....when you came in a restaurant they asked "smoking or non smoking">> now that seems odd

soon it will seem odd to us that indoor areas like the piano bar were smoking

as long as they have a couple places to smoke they can still cruise in relative happiness....after all most resorts are going non smoking

the "cigar bar", maybe the sports bar....a deck area....a small area of the casino to use when they are gambling

Lately John has been writing a LOT about the AIDA...which has an open plan....a large spa area....sounds a lot like the dream

AIDA is NON smoking except for 2 indoor/outdoor bars/deck areas

it is Carnival's German subsidiary

Germany is actually "behind" the times in smoking laws...even Italy has tougher anti smoking laws

however apparently the Germans are ok with these limited smoking ships

it can and will work

really where can smokers go on vacation anymore anyhow?? No Disney property permits it indoors

the Parks are mostly non smoking..they have tiny little area to smoke in

Florida and California have some of the toughest laws that prohibit indoor smoking

most of the "good" hotel chains are non smoking

what is the option?? Go to Kentucky?

stay at a truckstop motel?? Sit in your own RV and puff away??

I have no idea....as long as there is someplace to smoke on a ship the smokers should be ok IMHO that is just what will happen..they won't go totally non smoking but will simply continue to limit the areas where they permit smoking

It is the "way" of the future

As more people quit smoking...as smoker's die out (sad for them, often prematurely it seems)....as the public sentiment and laws make it more and more clear that smoking is a legal in few places and barely tolerated practice...yes, the future looks good for non smokers at sea

FYI>> I never think about smoking on land, as I don't have to see it or smell it...and I don't personally know anyone who smokes

Well years ago if you lit up or not you would have to smell the smokers who did...it was pretty gross...

"ding ding...the captain turned off the seatbelts light...ding ding...the captain turned off the no smoking light"...

and they could and would light up...

in a few years the idea of people smoking inside cruise ships and inside cabins will probably seem as odd and strange as smoking in a plane

remember... cruiseships used to have smoking and nonsmoking areas in dining room and showlounge...people walked the halls etc puffing away

people could smoke in college classrooms

offices were smoking...people smoked in malls...in grocery stores

people used to be allowed to smoke in hospitals...!!

and they used to have cigarette ads on tv....the Marlboro man was famous

he died of lung cancer (the model who played him)

I wonder if the same assumption was made when airlines made their planes smoke-free.

Ah, but people don't spend a week or more on an airplane.

I'm predicting this policy won't last much past the 1st season.

It's all about revenue......if revenue targets for the casino aren't met, they'll change the policy.

Even Atlantic City did away with their "nonsmoking" policy in the casinos because of falling "expected and actual" revenue.

It's the money, folks......always.....

If the nonsmokers want this to be a success, then you must be prepared to spend some good money in the casino....and keep it standing room only for a week.

Ain't gonna happen.

If it worked, Paradise would still be nonsmoking.

And, don't jump me....I don't smoke. I'm just practical and know how things work.

I guess what I don't understand is why Carnival goes to such EXTREMES.

(like the Paradise being completely nonsmoking)

If Carnival had used the Oceania model....the Paradise would still be sailing today...not smokefree...but with "less smoke".

Now Carnival is wanting to restrict it to just a small portion of the casino....

why not partition off half the casino for smokers and put in a proper ventilation system?

Glass partitions would give the illusion of "being open and inviting" while limiting the amount of smoke that comes into the rest of the ship.

A proper vent system would handle the rest.

So most non-smokers are really secret smokers?

Based on the number of people who bum smokes from others, yes.

Based on the number of spouses who sneak smokes anytime the other spouse is out or away....yes,

Based on the number of grown adults who hide it from their parents and kids....yes.

And,this is just my circle of friends.....

I don't know anyone who seriously lives like that:eek:

Glass partitions could be a potential liability;) "Hubby had to get 200 stitches because he was drunk and walked through the glass partition....we're suing the cruise line..." (Wasn't there a similar story on here a few years ago when someones kid walked through a balcony door and dude was suing CCL??)

I think a better ventilation system could handle it all - not just the "rest" JMO.

Paradise was of a different time. There were also no non-smoking hotels back then. Today, there are many.

You also make it sound like it is a non-smoking casino, which it is not. It still has ares for smokers.

Well, I'm certainly not taking up a cause, but I could really care less whether people smoke or not. I have been around smokers all my life. Although its not my choice, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. So I guess you could call me an apathetic non smoker.

Not all of us are like you though. I've been forced to leave a machine on multiple occassions because someone sat next to me blowing their smoke in my face so I couldn't breathe. This is a welcome change for me.

I'm with you....it might last a season but no more. Look at Atlantic City...who cancelled their nonsmoking policy 3/4 months after it was "made law".......

Absolutely. Why go to AC when I can go to Philadelphia Park and gamble and smoke to my heart's content?

Trump Plaza's East Tower was completely smoke-free for a couple of years, and that ended in failure due to a lack of interest.

Unless smoking is outlawed entirely (which will take some major untangling of lobbies, financial products, major corporations, etc. etc. etc.), smokers will exist and will smoke in casinos. It might be in an increasingly smaller area, but you'll not see a completely smoke-free casino any time soon.

I have to say that with all the thought put into this "new design"....with all these "open air" areas.....why didn't the Dream simply build a large section of the casino on one of the "open air" sides and have that the smoking section?

A few small fans in the right place....would keep an "open air" space (even a large one) very pleasant....maybe even pleasant enough for nonsmokers to use as well???

At the time there was NO "Oceania" model....that is a more recent development. Carnival was ahead of their time.

They miscalculated cause they didn't realize that stubborn smokers in a family or group could and would squash the whole cruise for many others...they wouldn't book if they could not smoke for a week

The new things they are putting into place will solve that...smokers will be able to get their "fix" and the rest of us will be able to breathe

Maybe you live in a state that still allows indoor smoking but trust me for those of us in stricter states, it is a huge "shock" to encounter smoke indoors ...we are NOT used to it, and we don't like it

With a few indoor and outdoor places just for smokers they should be able to cruise just fine...after all there are a lot of hotels and resorts etc that no longer allow them to smoke inside

I don't see anyone whining that people can't smoke inside Marriotts or Disney properties
