batoryfirst Posted October 28, 2009 #1 Share Posted October 28, 2009 I need some ideas for eating in London. Not interested in white-tablecloth restaurants, but more casual bistro types. As you see in the title, I'm not an Indian food fan. Wish I was as I know there are numerous good ones throughout London. Went to a noodle bar on last visit and don't need to do that again. We're staying in Kensington for 3 nights and there will be 9 of us. Knowing that we'll be eating non-stop once we board our transatlantic cruise, we don't need huge meals prior to boarding. Nancy
haggis Posted October 28, 2009 #2 Share Posted October 28, 2009 In the Kensington area you'll be spoilt for choice for all types of restaurants. Apart from Kensington itself, to the North theres Notting Hill Gate, South is Earls Court and South Kensington, West is Hammersmith and Chiswick and East is Knightsbridge. All these areas have an abundance of specialty restaurants from the expensive to the reasonable. Theres also the pub grub night and day which in the Fulham Road and Kings Road is exceptionally good value. Honestly, the list is endless. Food wont be a problem. SteveH2508 Posted October 28, 2009 #3 Share Posted October 28, 2009 I live in Chelsea (just south of Kensington) so here are some of our favourites: Coopers Arms, Flood Street (my local pub) Big Easy, Kings Road (big portions) La Delizia Pizza The Botanist, Sloane Square (we have not been here yet, but it does get some very good reviews)

SteveH2508 Posted October 28, 2009 #6 Share Posted October 28, 2009 Check out the fare in the local pubs. JD Wetherspoon are a good pub operator, who have good food. There are no Wetherspoons pubs in the Kensington or Chelsea areas - Victoria is probably the nearest. :( For value for money they are hard to beat. SteveH2508 Posted October 28, 2009 #7 Share Posted October 28, 2009 If you want to check out pubs in the Kensington area then you could do worse than Scarsdale Tavern, Kensington Beer in the Evening is a very comprehensive guide to pubs in the UK. English Jane Posted October 30, 2009 #9 Share Posted October 30, 2009 Wetherspoons (aka 'Spoonies' to all students) cannot be beat for cheap breakfast if you are out and about.
batoryfirst Posted October 30, 2009 Author #10 Share Posted October 30, 2009 Thanks for the great responses. They will me help me so much as I lead our group around London. I didn't want to spend precious time wandering around looking for places to eat. Nancy
Saturated Posted November 6, 2009 #11 Share Posted November 6, 2009 Of course, if you fancied something a little more exotic, crocodile, kangaroo or peacock for instance, you could always sample the delights of Archipelago in Whitfield St ( between Warren St and Goodge St stations) http://www.archipelago-restaurant.co.uk/ :)
Mooloo Posted November 6, 2009 #12 Share Posted November 6, 2009 If you're in South Ken, heart of French ex-pat land, you can always go to Patisserie Valerie. Very yum, v french, amazing cakes. http://www.patisserie-valerie.co.uk/. Don't forget to have a look at the very good deals hotels & decent restaurants offer for lunch. I had a 'ladies who lunch' day with a mate and after setting our credit cards at 'stun', we wandered around Sloane Sq by way of Harrods and Harvey Nick's before ending up at the Cadogan hotel. A massive, fantastic quality 3 course lunch in their Lantry's restaurant came to £19 and change. They also do a set 3 course dinner with all you can drink wine for £30. http://www.langtrysrestaurant.com/ - seriously good food. If you head away from the Royal Borough: If you're near St Paul's and are looking for 'British food', albeit with a meaty twist, the Paternoster Chop House is a decent bet at 2 courses 11.00 3 courses 14.50 http://www.danddlondon.com/conran/cms/repositories/live//data/paternoster/downloads/6123_0_samplebarlunchmenu.pdf http://www.danddlondon.com/restaurants/paternoster/home Also have a look at: Belgo - http://www.belgo-restaurants.co.uk/ - good deals and they have a 'beat the clock offer in a lot of their branches (you pay the time on the clock when you order, so 6.05pm = £6.05 etc If you're near Leicester Sq: The Cork & bottle is absolutely amazing! http://www.corkandbottle.net/ Taz - http://www.tasrestaurant.com/ - yummy Would def second the reccomendation to look at the Whetherspoon's when you are out and about. Decent food at v affordable prices and there's something for every palate - good veggie, indian, and proper food too (avoid the chips / fries) and you'll do well . http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/ Whatever you do, please promise to avoid: anything with the word 'steakhouse' in the name, Pizza Hut and most places near Leicester Sq Enjoy London :)
SteveH2508 Posted November 6, 2009 #13 Share Posted November 6, 2009 Some excellent advice from Mooloo there. If you are in the Trafalgar Square area then one pub not to be missed is The Harp - Covent_Garden

sailingkiwi Posted November 9, 2009 #17 Share Posted November 9, 2009 I just wanted to mention that with 9 people you might want to consider booking tables for your meals (or at least dinners) to ensure that you can be accommodated. Also, if there are children in your group you will need to ask whether pubs will be happy to serve them dinner and until what time.

There is however, one at LGW/Gatwick Airport, for those travelling through. An excellent place to grab a bite before a flight. :-)
