Empress--New Jersey questions?

Recommended Posts

The search feature isn't working. So--what airport would you fly into to go on the Empress, and where could I stay? Is the port a long distance from the airport? I'm not at all familiar with the area.

EWR is closest but LGA might have better fares. JFK is a hike no matter what.

I'd avoid Philly, Long Island & Westchester.

Public & private transportation abound -- for the right price.

There are all sorts of accomodation option available. For a budget (about $89 / night) there are a whole bunch of hotels by Newark AP. For a treat you can stay in some of the most fanous hotels in the world in NYC but expect to pay top dollar.

Have to disagree on even considering LGA; Newark airport is only 15 minutes from the terminal and I can't imagine why you'd want to deal with cross-town (or any other kind of) NY traffic if you don't have to. Agree however, that getting a taxi from Newark Airport to the pier will be absolutely no trouble; there are always plenty of taxis around. If you do want to fly in the night before, while I don't know prices on specific hotels, I would make sure that you are either at an airport hotel, or that you go up to Secaucus or East Rutherford (many good options there, and they are right off the turnpike, so you will not be substantially increasing your trip to the pier). I would not recommend choosing a hotel in the city of Newark (such as the Newark Gateway Hilton), both because they tend to be pricey, and because central Newark is not exactly a "garden spot." (And I speak as one who worked in the Newark Gateway for four years).

I must go down to the sea again. . . .

I agree with Lizcourt. Try Seacaucus, the airport, or maybe there is something in Bayonne. Also Newark airport makes the most sense. There are plenty of hotels at Newark airport. Check with RCCL there may be a shuttle to the pier from Newark.

We are cruising out of Cape Liberty-Bayonne in June and we booked the Crowne Plaza Meadowlands Hotel 3 star Secaucus on Priceline for $45 per night. It's convenient to the Newark Airport and the Pier ( about 15 minutes). There is a shopping mall nearby and restaurants on premises.
