sw18 Posted December 30, 2009 #1 Share Posted December 30, 2009 Having sailed the southerly route via Madeira, the Canaries & the Azores several times on the Cloud, Sea Dream II & Regatta (with the largest of the 3, Regatta, giving the most uncomfortable ride in comparable seas) I wanted to try a few new ports of call.......so I'm now booked on the Southampton to New York voyage on the Whisper :) Has anyone sailed the North Atlantic on the Shadow/Whisper at this time of year? And how did they handle? Any other recent feedback on the Whisper would be much appreciated! :):):)
ltsally Posted December 31, 2009 #2 Share Posted December 31, 2009 That crossing aboard the Whisper (though landing in Boston, not NYC) was our very first cruise. Had always wanted to do a TA. We loved it. It was, however, pretty rough for the first couple days - an always unpredictable condition, of course. We especially enjoyed the Canadian Maritime ports - never expected high rises (even short ones) in St. Johns Newfoundland and Halifax is a pretty town, interesting museum and good restaurants within walking distance of the dock. Have a great time - we sure did.
sw18 Posted December 31, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted December 31, 2009 Thanks for the reply! I'm not averse to a little movement......and am looking forward to a crossing that is a little more leisurely than the QM2 :)
gentlemancruiser Posted January 5, 2010 #4 Share Posted January 5, 2010 I've never sailed on Silversea, but I also liked the route and I am thinking about it. How does the Whisper compare with to Silverseas other ships?

Rare Silver Spectre Posted March 28, 2010 #6 Share Posted March 28, 2010 I've never sailed on Silversea, but I also liked the route and I am thinking about it. How does the Whisper compare with to Silverseas other ships? She is a wee bit under the weather and needs a little 'TLC' to make her feel better (and bring her back up to the SS standard). And for those of you out there (and you know who you are) who find my postings a little obtuse, please, please, grow up and get back on the programme. lol

I disembarked on March 15th in Singapore and you embarked. "Miss Whisper" was feeling under the weather. She had good days and bad days. Still was great to see her again. PS Caledonia Posted March 29, 2010 #8 Share Posted March 29, 2010 Hi there, I posted a little earlier on another thread. My partner and I are booked on this crossing and really looking forward to it. Hopefully, it won't be too bumpy! :)

Tyler919 Posted March 31, 2010 #10 Share Posted March 31, 2010 Just booked Mid Ship Veranda on this cruise, and wondering if on Deck 8 you can hear the joggers running around above? Would we be better off on Deck six above the casino? This crossing will be just my dad and me. He and I prefer the crossing for the sea days, and the fewer ports the better for him. I must admit that I am looking forward to the Ireland and Canadian stops however. First timers on Silversea, but have done Regent a good bit, including their Atlantic crossing in '08. unfathomable Posted March 31, 2010 #11 Share Posted March 31, 2010 On Whisper, you're OK. Take a look at the deck plans, and you will see at that deck 8 has deck 9 suites above it. Joggers and power walkers have a deck 9 circuit that does not go that far forward. There's a deck 10 walkway above deck 9 balconies, but it doesn't lend itself to jogging. On Cloud/Wind, they are asked not to go around the forward section; there's an "approved" circuit that doesn't go that far forward, but we have seen people ignore this. So relax. Tyler919 Posted April 17, 2010 #12 Share Posted April 17, 2010 Moved to deck 6, a little more aft and on the "sunny side" as we cross. hoping will be warm enough to use the verandah and stare at the sea for the crossing. Received our flights already and they are quite respectable. Flying into Gatwick and then they get us to Southampton somehow. Probably motorcoach knowing the prices for private cars in England are so high. Getting excited to be back at sea. Now trying to figure out how to bring my own high quality chips... I see this crossing has been listed now as a culinary cruise with a rather infamous Norwegian Chef. The infamous part is that the entire restaurant staff gave 4 weeks notice in December and quit. Chef was not the owner, so can't wait for "the rest of the story".

Tyler919 Posted May 14, 2010 #19 Share Posted May 14, 2010 I understand the Waterford production facilty and store are no longer open for our Ireland stop, but there are shops which carry the crystal for tourism sake. Any corrections to this would be appreciated. Dad and I will be looking for an authentic pub for lunch in this stop and the stop in Fowey. I can't wait for Dad to try to get "American Ice" (ie more than 1 cube) out of a British bartender for his vodka.:D

Any information would be appreciated. :) Not a direct answer to your question, but we just (April) did almost the same itinerary in reverse, and had very calm seas. (I actually did not hear of one person being seasick although there was some "funny walking" a few times!) In talking with Captain Corsaro, he seemed to indicate that the spring crossing is usually the rougher sailing of the two. You just never know. Of course he was also talking about how rough the early part of the January Spirit crossing was and the southern route is usually much calmer than the north Atlantic. Bottom line - hope for the best! History doesn't necessarily predict the future when it comes to the seas ...
Tyler919 Posted June 7, 2010 #21 Share Posted June 7, 2010 I'll be curious if any of you hear how we are getting from the Airport(s) to Southampton using Silversea air/transfers. We have been given our flights but not transfer stuff...still plenty of time, but getting excited
kathe Posted July 16, 2010 #22 Share Posted July 16, 2010 We are now down to 45 days to sailing and I am in full planing mode.We leave for England on the 26th of Aug. and are going to the Marriott in Slough. My husband retired from Mars and they have a plant there so he is meeting old friends.I have not been to Windsor Castle since my daughter was 4 she is now 44 so I plan to revisit and see the Doll house on my own if it is still there. What shows are playing in the West End that are must see?Has anyone made plans for any private tours?I am looking into tours in Waterford . We have been on the Waterford Crystal tour, which I think will be reopened when we are there,it was very good. I would like to see the countryside this time. It is getting close and the fun begins.Kathe
LaComtesse75017 Posted July 16, 2010 #23 Share Posted July 16, 2010 Kathe.....here's a couple of ideas for the Windsor/Slough area......I grew up about 10 miles away, so know the area fairly well. I'm sure you know all about the main attractions already, so here's a couple of lesser known ones....... - Runnymede - aside from it's obvious historical relevance there is the JFK memorial & a fantastic view of the Thames, & much of west London from the RAF memorial. http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-runnymede.htm - Windsor Home Farm shop - one of Prince Philip's pet projects. http://www.windsorfarmshop.co.uk/ - Cliveden - http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-cliveden Apart from the Mars factory, Slough itself has little to offer (with the exception of the chocolate liquor smell that you sometimes catch when driving through!) - when I was at school the kids from Mars families were always very popular!!! kathe Posted July 18, 2010 #24 Share Posted July 18, 2010 Thank you so much for your suggestions.Runnymead is a great suggestion, touch base with our shared past. Our children got a lot of milage with their father working at Mars, also, especially at Holloween.I finally got all of our hotels set in the UK tonight, was on the computer trying to use polnts from all our various programs for hours.I never realized how easy Amex is to work with until today.Kathe
