Sunset Beach Resort Montego Bay

We are still wondering what to do in Montego Bay and the one place that looks really fun for kids is Sunset Beach. I can't find a lot of info about it though. Can we just get a taxi and get a day pass at the door or do we have to make a reservation (and how do I go about doing this)? Also, what are the prices for adults and kids and does that include any food/drink?

Thanks so much for any info you can provide!:)

We were they last week. It's perhaps a 10-15 minute walk, but it's through a bad area with construction, not a nice walk, and confusing route. A cab at the pier is $9 but if you walk out to the road it's $6 per taxi. Cabbies behind a fence will approach you as soon as you leave the pier gate, they will show you how to walk around the fence to their cabs. They are the ones who can't get in the pier cue b/c it's full. Only use cabs with red licence plates, and set the price before walking to their cab.

Yes you can buy passes at the gate, there is a guard there who asks what you want to do and then calls the front desk to set it up. We wanted to spend 2 hours there from 2-4 and pay as you go, but they said it's only AI, the waiters don't have a cash system, and they'd drop it to $30pp, too much for us for 2 hours so we declined. Our cabbie said the Ritz is free for cruisers, pay as you go, $15 ride. The Holiday Inn Sunspree is $55 all-in, same area as the Ritz. And the Royal Decameron is $70 all-in, closer, between the port and Mo Bay town.

My husband and I took our kids to SSB for an AI vacation back in 2006. The water park there is fabulous and is the number one reason I chose that resort to stay at. I was pregnant so I wasn't allowed on the water slide, but the kids had a blast!

My son was complaining about not having sun glasses so we decided to walk to the cruise ship port to shop. When we were there, it only took about 15-20 minutes to walk to the port (t was pretty much a straight shot), but we were approached every couple of minutes by taxis wanting to give us a ride. We felt safe though, and I would walk it again with no hesitation.

Been awhile though and I have no info about day pass prices...

We were there in January, booked through Jamaicaforaday dot com - we opted for the $9 transfers, only problem was we couldn't find our tour at the pier & turns out they were waiting on us (we are the type that are early for everything). We went to the info center & they made a phone call & told us to wait right there, after about 20 minutes, we went outside & found our bus full of people waiting on "4 more" people...

Towels are available, variety of food, drinks & fun. $60pp - not sure about kids. Internet & Long distance phone service available for a small fee. DD had her hair braided in the salon, great job, think she paid $30. Even got to watch a couple from our ship get married on the beach.

Great info! I think i'm convinced that is where my DH and 2 kids will go in June. The lazy river and slides will be a hit. Is there any advantage to booking through Jamaicaforaday vs walk up?

Also sounds like grabbing our own taxi is the way to go vs prebooking the Jamaicaforaday shuttle and all that hassle.

any feedback on the beach and crowds? we are also looking at sandals grande , couples, or riu. This is the cheapest out of all the others but were afraid its going to be crowded and beach is small

I can only speak from my visit three years ago, but the beach was probably my least favorite part of my stay there. It is small, but that did not bother me. There is a rock jetty that divides the beach--one side is pretty rocky and is more for snorkeling. The other side is more for swimming, but there were so many tiny rocks and smashed shells at the shoreline that you really needed to wear water shoes. It is definitely not a beach that you can walk up and down for long walks, and I didn't like that there isn't much of a sandy area in the water before the seagrass begins. (I realize that is the natural state of the ocean there but I personally prefer vast expanses of sandy bottom so that I don't inadvertently step on a sea urchin hiding in the grass).

If you go to tripadvisor and search for that hotel and click on the member submitted photos you should get a pretty good idea of what size the beach is. From the ones I just looked at I can say I didn't see the shell problem that I mentioned above, so maybe that was just when we were there.

I would say the big pull for SSB is the waterpark. And the fact that it is more affordable for people traveling with kids. And the waterpark area did get pretty crowded during the day. I don't recall the beach being excessively crowded.

One of the best reefs for snorkeling---some distance from the beach but great---swimup bar with redstripe on tap and of course pina coladas. I'll be in Ocho Rios next week and plan on spending the day at Sunset Beach Grand---Have a great time. Ray

We are planning on Sunset Beach for our cruise in July. Can anyone tell me specifically where their bus picks-up? We have two in our group that have difficulty walking, would you "veterans" recommend taking a taxi or taking the Sunset transportation? Thank you in advance.

You will take a Juta cab from the cruise terminal.

Just returned from Carnival Conquest. We booked Sunset Beach thru Jamaicaforaday.com and opted to let them transport us. Nine in our group, 3 generations from 76 to 4 yoa. We all had a fun time, grandpa enjoyed the small casino as well as the pool. The little ones loved the kiddie pool and slide and the older kids enjoyed the big slide. The lunch buffet was very good, lots of variety and plentiful. The beach area was smallish (we had some rain so not a lot of time to check out the beach). There was putt-putt golf, large outdoor chess/checker game, souvenir shop. The large open sided reception area was nice during the downpour. Our only complaint was that they ran out of towels. We heard from others that this happens frequently so maybe bring your own.

We were not bothered by anyone to buy anything, never felt threatened or unsafe.
