Norwegian Fjords/North Cape cruise - bathing suits?

Recommended Posts

Hello! This may be a stupid question, but do we bother bringing bathing suits for the outdoor pools for the Norwegian Fjords/North Cape cruise? Will it be too cold outside for this (July 5th cruise). Not sure if people utilize the outdoor pools for Northern Europe cruises..Please advise..thanks :p

There are no "dumb questions", only those you don't ask!! In part it depends on how warm is the water in your ship pool, how well that pool is sheltered from the winds and your personal "taste/style" for how cool you can stand it while in a pool. We will be doing a July 1-16 Norway Coast cruise, seeing the fjords and going up above the Arctic Circle to the "Land of the Midnight Sun". Here are a few of our port stops and the historic temperatures on those days:

Alesund July 4, Sunday, 8 am-5 pm Docked, 9 hours in port, Sunrise: 3:48 am, Sunset: 11:30 pm. For July 4, its average high is 58 and a low of 52. July average temperature 53.6F, wind speed 12.7 mph. 3.95 inches of rain for month.

Trondheim July 5, Monday, 7 am-7 pm Docked, 12 hours in port, its average high is 64 and a low of 50. Latitude: 63.5° N.

Tromsø July 8, Thursday, 8 am-5 pm Docked, 9 hours in port, average high of 57 and low of 47; record high of 69 and record low of 42 on this date. Twenty-four hours of daylight. Latitude: 69.7° N.

Hammerfest July 9, Friday, 7 am-Noon Docked, 5 hours in port, average high of 54 and low of 47; record high of 68 and record low of 42 on this date. Twenty-four hours of daylight, moon visible from 11:43 PM to 2:42 AM. Latitude: 70.7° N.

Bergen July 14, Wednesday , 8 am-11 pm Docked, 15 hours in port, average high of 62 and low of 51; record high of 73 and record low of 44 on this date. Sunrise of 4:37 am and sunset of 10:50 pm. Latitude: 60.4° N.

You might also check on the Baltics Boards for the Europe ports. You will get more specific post there for Norway, etc.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

We did the Princess Scandinavia Interlude mid July 2009. We put on our swimsuits 1x but found the outdoor pool water too cold. This year, we are doing the Norwegian Interlude and will be saving space in our luggage without our swimsuits.

We travelled in july and found the weather improved once we had gone above the arctic circle. Surely everyone has space to squash one swimsuit in. I would take it. It may be wonderful weather or it may not.

Agree!! Great points. Take the suit and hope you get lucky. The only thing certain about the weather is the uncertainty, both good and bad. It's nice and super sunny right now in Central Ohio, high of 61F coming, wonderful. Forgetting about the terrible winter and all of that snow.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio
