Airline credit for fare decrease

If a fare drops and you get an airline credit for it, in the case of a minor child does the credit have to be used in their name? Do they "own" the credit even if Mom and/or Dad paid the fare?

 

For example, I book airfare for our whole family and we become eligible for $200 in airline credit. If my husband and I decide to take a trip without the kids, can we use the credit from their tickets for ourselves?

Depends. What airline? For Southwest, anyone can use it. For most, a credit voucher is issued in the original passenger's name, and must be used by them.

Depends on the airline if they issue a credit, but generally it's issued as a single credit to a single person, the person who booked the flights.

Delta or American, most likely. I guess I should have specified that. :o

 

Flying from a small regional airport limits my choices a lot.

The price might have to drop a lot for you to get a credit in the first place. I think Delta and American will charge you a substantial change fee, even though the only thing you are changing is how much you are paying for your existing flights.

 

Southwest doesn't charge a change fee and bags still fly free.
