Restaurants in Monte Carlo

Has anyone skipped their dinner on board ship to have a wonderful dinner in Monte Carlo?

Can you recommend restaurants?

Thank you,

Molly

There is a gorgeous restaurant right beside the Grand Casino that has an indoor air-conditioned dining room as well as an outdoor patio. We chose to sit on the patio as we were just planning on having a drink and small snack. The meals looked wonderful (sorry can't remember the name of the restaurant but, a google search may help)....but, keep in mind that a meal in the heart of Monte Carlo/Monaco is going to cost a pretty penny. We are a family of 5 and ordered 2 ice creams, 2 cans of coke and a bottle of water and it cost 60euros....the people watching was worth it, but did notice that a sandwich and salad combo was going for 35euros per plate..OUCH....sorry I can;t remember the name but, location, location, location.....

I had the pleasure of visiting Monte Carlo for 3 days courtesy of my company (an external advisors meeting). We ate at a couple of very nice restaurants that I would never consider paying for myself. One was a private dinner at the Autoclub de Monaco if you can believe that.

I will be back on the ship for dinner. Departure from Monte Carlo is 4 PM anyway.

Bonjour, Molly

The Café de Paris is certainly THE place to be for good food, a relaxed atmosphere and serious "people watching and car spotting". It is particularly nice on the terrace.

Other than that, you have the choice between a wide variety of wonderful restaurants. Some of my favorites:

"Le Grill" on the top floor of chic Hotel de Paris, overlooking the Old Town and the Port - romantic setting, delicious food, top service, fantastic wine list. You will feel like a princess! Pricey.

"Le Mandarine" at Hotel Port Palace (in port, as the name indicates), a one-Michelin-star modern restaurant. Beautiful view, easy to reach. Pricey.

Both restaurants are the very best places to watch, if there's a fire work scheduled in the evening during July and August.

There's also Joel Robuchon, the world's best chef, decorated with the most stars in the Michelin guide, cooking at Le Metropole Hotel. The next best chef, Alain Ducasse, heads the kitchen of "Louis XV" at Hotel de Paris ... starry, starry nights !

For all four restaurants, reservation in advance is necessary.

If you prefer a younger, more active restaurant, try "Black Legend" in port, which is a restaurant / bar with life music and becomes a lounge / disco at 11 p.m. featuring mostly Motown / 80's music.

Another modern restaurant is "L'Horizon" at the roof top terrace of Fairmont Hotel, of course with sea and harbour view.

Further away, direction of Larvotto Beach, you find "Maya Bay", a cozy but modern restaurant with Thai fusion cuisine. Very relaxed.

One of the most romantic places to dine is "La Vigie", situated just outside town in the gardens of Monte-Carlo Beach Hotel. It is situated on the tip of a tiny peninsula, overlooking the illuminated skyline of Monaco (looks like a little Hongkong from there), opened only in July and August. They have a daily menu, which I recommend, since à la carte can be a stiff at times, depending on the items available fresh from the market that day.

The absolute highlight on balmy summer nights (again only in July and August) are the dinner shows at the Monte Carlo Summer Sporting. Each night, there's another internationally known artist performing, starting with Stevie Wonder on July 9th, or Sir Elton John in early August ... and many more. Prices are high but vary with the artist, too. Considering, you have a world-class setting, a very good 3-course dinner and the privilege to watch Elton John with "only" another 1000 priviledged guests and never feel crowded, it's worth every dime.

To extend the list to the tiny litte local restaurants with speciality food will definitely keep me writing until tomorrow morning. However, I hope you find an idea among the above suggestions.

Have a wonderful evening in Monaco and BON APPETIT !
