On RC, the majority of people conform to the suggested dress code but many do not so with no jacket he will not be out of place. Just be aware for future referance, such is not the case on all cruise lines. On Princess and especially Celebrity, he might feel out of place.

The following expectation can be found on RCI’s Web Page:

What are the dress codes onboard?
There are three distinct types of evenings onboard: casual, smart casual and formal. Suggested guidelines for these nights are:

Casual: Sport shirts and slacks for men, sundresses or pants for women
Smart Casual: Jackets and ties for men, dresses or pantsuits for women
Formal: Suits and ties or tuxedos for men, cocktail dresses for women

3 to 4-night cruises include one formal night and two or three casual nights.
5 - nights include one formal, one smart casual and three casual nights.
7-night cruises include two formal nights, one smart casual night and four casual nights.
10, 11, and 12-night cruises include three formal nights and three smart casual nights, all other nights are casual.
14 and 15-night cruises include three formal nights and four smart casual nights. All other nights are casual.

We appreciate your usual parental guidance and cooperation in observing these easy guidelines with your children.

Yes, I've seen this on all my cruises: it's DH sitting across the table from me!!

He wears, collared shirts with nice slacks on Smart Casual night, sometimes a silk t-shirt with his sports coat, too.

tezbear,
your hubby can wear slacks & polo. You'll see so many different forms of attire.
See ya at the ship.

Are jeans appropriate at any time in the dining room for dinner? We know on Carnival most of the people wear jeans on casual night. Is there a difference in casual wear between both cruise lines.

Most people on RCI don't consider jeans appropriate for the dining room on any night. They are fine for the Windjammer casual dining.

Having said that, a bunch of people will jump in to disagree with me, because THEY like to wear them. It's just that RCI has posted a suggested dress code that doesn't include jeans, and most threads on this board also suggest no jeans, so you decide for yourself.

You're not going to be tossed out of the dining room on your ear, but you will be underdressed compared to a majority of the guests in the dining room.

Wear what you would to a very nice restaurant.

No, jeans are not allowed in the main dining room during dinner hours. You can wear them for breakfast and lunch.

Oh, I love this topic! I think people dress terribly on cruise ships these days...can't they leave the jeans and baseball caps at home? More than anything else I really dislike formal nights when I'm in a tux (properly dressed) and the guy at the next table is sitting there in a polo shirt and slacks (improperly dressed)...drives my absolutely nuts! On one cruise I asked to have my table changed because the other people just couldn't seem to get with the program...and have about reached the point where I will simply tell a fellow tablemate that he really would be more comfortable up at the Windjammer buffet where it's sort of okay to dress as one would for cutting the lawn...there just is NO style anymore...sad.

your husband will be just fine with a polo shirt and slacks...the only two nites that he should come to dinner with a jacket is on the 2 formal nites...half the time the jacket ends up on the back of the chair...SUN BURN...have a great time...

I agree, We have dressed down way too much in this country.

I am a high school teacher and I still wear slacks and a tie to work. I am one of the few.

I just bought two new suits, been awhile, and plan on wearing the dark one to formal night with white shirt, black regualr tie, french cuff sirt and cufflinks. I hardly ever have the need for a tuz so the new suit will have to be appropriate.

I would feel out of place wearing jeans to dinner. Very tacky.

I find the reactions that this topic gets very interesting to say the least. Although I do agree that a certain decorum should be maintained, I would NEVER get worked up about another person's attire. I would rather enjoy myself - and my DH - on our vacation then to resort to that level of superficial shallowness.

If we were dining at a 5* restaurant, then yes, I would agree with *your* formal dress code, however, we are not!!

It's too bad, you may have missed out on meeting some very nice people! It is a pity that you judge others by their attire. But I agree with PhoenixCruiser, they might have been relieved that you were no longer at THEIR table.

I don't normally get involved with the controversial topics. I can understand your right to disagree and be internally perturbed. But what makes you think that you are better than someone and can make a comment like that to them? I would consider that very rude, just as you think it is rude to not wear a tux to dinner.

It's too bad, that of all of the great things about a cruise, you need to worry about what other's are wearing. Bummer for you, I think.

tezbear, Don't worry about causing a controversy. ANY topic about clothing causes a controversy on the Royal Caribbean board (and several others). Your DH will be fine in what you mention.

BTW: On previous threads some posters have written that it is not possible to be overdressed on a cruise. I disagree. We found that some people were overdressed on casual night. You just KNOW that the people we saw in formal suits and long, beaded gowns in the dining room on CASUAL nights are the same ones who complain about those who UNDERdress on formal night. I mean, RCI suggests attire for casual night, and these cruisers did not follow the guidelines. Did their overdressing bother me? Of course not, but I did find it interesting.
