Aviendha Posted April 16, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 16, 2004 I posted this on the Europe board also: I just received an email from Celebrity/Royal Caribbean saying that all shore tours to Akrotiri (in Santorini) are cancelled. Apparently, there is a restoration project that has been delayed and pushed back to the end of the year (2004), so the site will not be open for visitation. I'm just passing the info along so everyone can make other plans while in Santorini. We had booked the Akrotiri site/wine tasting shore excursion through Celebrity and will have to find something else to do. I'm so disappointed... I was really looking forward to seeing this site! Petoonya Posted April 17, 2004 #3 Share Posted April 17, 2004 There's a heck of a lot to do in Santorini- missing Akrotiri is disappointing but it's a beautiful island and very easy to navigate on your own with a rental car. Pretty much impossible to get lost. Lots of wineries and beautiful beaches...pretty little fishing village in Oia to wander about in. We visited last May and at the time had word also that Akrotiri would be "closed". But curiously it wasn't! It was mind boggling to see things from that ancient world before Thera exploded thousands of years ago...working toilets even! But then on Millennium's itinerary you're going to be seeing SO much. It won't make or break your cruise in the big picture to have missed it. Have a terrific time!

jgrkld Posted April 17, 2004 #5 Share Posted April 17, 2004 I understand and share your disappointment. We were in Santorini last September. Akrotiri is closed on Mondays and we were there on a Monday, but it didn't matter anyway because it was closed for restoration then too. We're hoping to go back to Santorini next year and see Akrotiri. We love ancient cultures and Akrotiri is at the top of the list. Crete would be fantastic too. We did get to go to the Archaeology Museum in Santorini which is filled with objects excavated from Akrotiri. We really enjoyed the museum. You can walk there easily after taking the cable car (or donkey or climbing steps) to the top. It's probably a mile or so from the cable car. Santorini is absolutely beautiful. We also took a small boat over to Nea Kameni, the volcano and hiked to the top of the volcano, which was interesting. aqua Posted April 17, 2004 #7 Share Posted April 17, 2004 I don't blame you for being disappointed that Atrotiri is closed. However, don't let it bother you too much. It is a nice site, but there are other ruins in Europe that are more extensive. Santorini is the most beautiful port I have ever visited and you will find plenty to do. And if you are feeling brave, ride the donkeys. You will never forget the experience!
zebra Posted April 18, 2004 #8 Share Posted April 18, 2004 Can anyone tell me - if we were to rent a car on Santorini - how big is the island? Excluding stops, approx. how long would it take to drive the island? Petoonya Posted April 19, 2004 #9 Share Posted April 19, 2004 To drive Santorini end to end would be about 40-45 minutes. Adding in some sideroad vistas maybe 90 minutes.
