pilarkitty Posted June 11, 2010 #1 Share Posted June 11, 2010 How often do Coast Guard rescues happen on ships? I have been on two Carnival cruises and someone has been evacuated each time. Is this a common occurrence or a weird coincidence? Thanks, Monica
Tightlinerods Posted June 11, 2010 #2 Share Posted June 11, 2010 Happens every time it is needed... How often does Lifeflight land on a freeway in your area? Only when needed right... could be 10 days in a row, or could go years with out something happening... I would say more of a rare occurance than frequent. How often do you think that town is going to need a hospital? Chances are pretty often. About half of my cruises have ended up with us having to go back to port to drop someone off, the Miami Fireboat coming out to meet us to take someone off, or the Coast Guard taking someone off. LisaT12 Posted June 11, 2010 #4 Share Posted June 11, 2010 this isn't exactly what you were asking about but....we cruised less than 3 weeks after 9/11....at each port the Coast Guard escorted us into the ports with many men on deck, armed and weapons out and ready. It was a very surreal experience.
jamers22 Posted June 11, 2010 #5 Share Posted June 11, 2010 Been on 2 cruises - both times the Coast Guard has picked someone up from our ship. 1st time - not far from Mobile (we just got where all we saw was ocean, no land) when the Coast Guard came up, blue lights flashing. We joked about getting a speeding ticket. Apparently someone had a little too much to drink and threatened to blow the ship up. He got a nice little escort back to Mobile.:D 2nd time - not sure what happened. They came up beside us, again, not long after leaving Mobile on our 2nd cruise, no lights flashing this time. A man dressed up pretty nice just stepped off the cruise ship and on to the Coast Guard boat and they were off.
Seydlitz Posted June 11, 2010 #6 Share Posted June 11, 2010 Out of 6 cruises it has only happen one time. Here is a link to a short video taken from our aft cabin.

Julienatul Posted June 11, 2010 #8 Share Posted June 11, 2010 saw one on one of our glory cruises. man had a heart attack. It was really neat to watch them bring the helicopter and hoist the man up to it.
kyrisong1 Posted June 11, 2010 #9 Share Posted June 11, 2010 I've had the pleasure to be on the Glory when she actually rescued small vessel in distress. It was in the middle of the night and the waters were fairly rough. We knew that the ship slowed suddenly and turned, but not so much that anything got askew or anything. The next evening at dinner the M'd announced they had stopped in the night and rescued a group of people from a smaller vessel!!!! We thought that was pretty cool!!! greatdanemom Posted June 11, 2010 #10 Share Posted June 11, 2010 I've seen people carried off by Medivacs on 3 of my 14 cruises. Cruisers seem to keep the Coast Guard busy!
Upandadam Posted June 11, 2010 #11 Share Posted June 11, 2010 Have seen it once on 8 cruises.
Earthworm Jim Posted June 11, 2010 #12 Share Posted June 11, 2010 Consider a town of three thousand people without a real medical facility. It's not really the same thing though. Compared to a town, a cruise ship population is probably older. On the other hand the people probably didn't have a serious long term illness or they wouldn't be on the ship. But most importantly I'd say there a lot fewer things on a cruise that could lead you to emergency medical care. (Car accidents, drug/gang related shootings, people falling off the roof cleaning their gutters, slicing their hand open preparing dinner, etc.) Of course there are some things more likely to happen on a cruise ship too, but I think overall there are fewer medical emergencies than in a similarly sized town even with the higher age. It all really depends. I have been a paramedic almost 30 years. I am sure that the doctors and PA's or NP on the ship think and act conservativly on medical issues. I have no idea if they are even capable of running a 12 lead diagnostic ECG on the ship. If I was medical on that ship and someone came to me with the complaint of chest pain, I would not take the chance. I would fly them off. I am betting that many people cruise with chronic medical issues that probably should not be on a cruise.
