You all have soooo much info I have to get some opinions. It looks like we will be traveling on VOS 7/16/04. Not sure which cabin (if any) to request. I am somewhat "plush" (my dd's term, meaning soft and cuddly), and dh is over 6 ft tall. Should we take our chance with a guarrantee inside or should we specify?

Is a promenade (PR) room worth the extra $? It looks like fun! Or would our $ be better spent with an outside or balcony?

We did take a cruise once before, when Chandris was sailing, waaaayyy before kids. We got such a deal on that one! We had the penthouse on the Amerikanis. It was super. Can't wait to cruise again. The kids are now getting older and we can ship them off to camp! LOL

Thanks in advance!

babchia,

My vote would be for the balcony if it is in the budget. With the 2 of you some private time on the balcony is great while at sea or in port. Once you have a balcony, it will be hard to go back! I personally can not do an inside cabin (DW agrees). JMHO.

Either way, I'm sure you will enjoy your cruise.

MAX CAT says go for the balcony. Very nice to just some fresh sea air...and you can go out day or night..whenever. you know how us cats like to be outside sometimes.

I would book an inside cabin for the first cruise. It is a lot cheaper and the money saved can be used for the 2nd cruise. The only advantage to picking a particular cabin is that you can make sure you pick one that is in a certain location or not under the casino, etc. If you are concerned about sea sickness middle and low. If you don't want to be near a noisy section of the ship look at the floor plan for your ship and above and below you and see what is around a specific cabin. If you want to gamble on getting the worst cabin in your gaurantee level book the gaurantee, but make sure you will be happy with the worst cabin. With a gaurantee you could be upgraded, but don't plan on it.

Good luck and go out and do it.

With the DH being over 6 feet and the description of yourself, I vote for the balcony.

Can anyone, explain to me how being 6' plus and possibly being a tad overweight, leads one to need a balcony? I am pretty sure that the ceilings in all the cabins are basically the same height, and outside of a suite the beds are the same no matter where you are. If you are really, really oversized then a suite will have significantly larger room and a larger shower or tub. I really think for most people that an inside cabin is a wonderful thing. You save a lot of money and you have access to everything that the people paying 10 times as much do. You get to eat the same food, visit the same ports, watch the same entertainment, etc. Don't get me wrong a nicer room is a nicer room and a room with a view is a plus, but there are views all over the ship, and they are available at no extra charge.

I'm with xcpdoojk: get the inside cabin and spend the extra money on other fun stuff. I, also, am "fluffy", and DH is 6' and large all over. We've have absolutely no trouble with an inside cabin.

I'd go for buying an upgrade at the pier.

babchia,
Welcome to the cruise critic boards.
I would go for the nicest cabin you can afford.
We will be on VOS 7/16/04. If you book for that sailing, once you have your Royal Caribbean booking number, head on over to the meet and mingle boards and register for the Cruise Critic Meet & Mingle party for that sailing. There are already 66 people signed up.

Our priority is budget. That's kept us in an
inside cabin most of the time and we've been
happy. I would have liked to have had a balcony
on a Panama Canal cruise, but had a great inside
rate. Found a couple of good viewing spots when
I needed to and that worked well. Meet some nice
people I wouldn't have met had I been on a balcony.

Go with what's in your budget or with what you can find the best deal on between the two. Promenade rooms are pretty nice and are actually quite roomy for inside cabins; however balconies are great for taking in port views and dining (room service), etc. We actually felt less movement with the PR, but loved the views from the balcony (with what little time we spent on it).

We booked promenade again for ourselves this year and got mom the balcony for her birthday. We'll just enjoy her view if need be.

My DH is a "big boy" and we have had no problems manuevering in Promenade rooms in the past.

#2, a Mini is a car manufactured from the late 50s until the 90s. A MINI is a refined British made sports car of the 21st century, of which it has no peers on the highways. Plus it is covered by warranty.

I'm also "plush" and DH is over 6 ft - we've had inside and outside cabin - never a balcony b/c we'd rather spend the money on other things - don't spend much time in the cabin anyways. We've always been comfortable in the cabins. My only thing is getting a mid-ship cabin, rather than far aft or bow. Maybe I'm inmagining it, but I think there's less motion mid-ship. With that said, we've booked guarantee 3 times and had nice mid-ship cabins. This next trip is the first time I've picked the cabin.

Have a great time - no matter what cabin you get, it's the cruise that's important.

My TA "talked" me into doing a guarantee on a recent trip. Did not find ANY advantage, and the disadvantage was not knowing until very late WHERE we would be.
I love the balcony or verandah suites. Worth the diff to me.. My wife and I are both mildly handicapped so do not want to to walk around much. So we USE the verandah a lot.

I guess I just like the feeling of spaciousness and I like to see the daylight coming through my stateroom. I would feel this way if I were 5' tall.

Same as I do not feel comfortable in a Mini Coupe!

I like to be able to sit on the balcony and have my coffee and cocktails. The balcony is also a great place to wait on a spouse while getting ready.

We had never booked a balcony cabin. Then Carnival upgraded us to a balcony on our last cruise. Now there's no going back. They ruined it for us. So the next cruise is a balcony as well. Aft no less.

An inside cabin is fine. We sleep better and more soundly in a dark cabin. I cant stand the light coming into the room too early and the curtain doesnt always block it out. I wait for my girlfriend to dress for dinner at one of the bars on ship. I have met some great fellow cruisers this way. It may have even been one of you fine people!

To me, the choice of cruiseline is more important onm size.. I'm 6'2" 250lbs, and beds are always an issue, but the beds are all the same size.. as to rooms, different lines have different size cabins, and from what I've seen, (NCL, CCL and RCL), RCL had the smallest standard (inside or outside) rooms and baths.. the shower will be an issue for a larger person, and NCL had much better than RCL... no plastic-wrap curtan...
