Are passports needed for Nassau?

Two people in our party do not have passports. NCL says we don't need them; one passenger is a 16 year old.

If you port stops and starts at the same US port (closed-loop), you can travel with a birth certificate and government-issued picture ID such as a drivers' license. Passports not required.

Exactly family of 4 we didn't have passports.. However catch your ship in time we went in July and 3 people missed the boat.. Then you will need a passport to return to the states.

Or is you need to leave the ship for any reason, illness or whatever, you will need a passport to get back in. You cannot fly back without one.
