138east Posted July 16, 2013 #27 Share Posted July 16, 2013 "Beer, wine and hard liquor are sold in package stores in Mass. Only a very few grocery stores hold a liquor license . If you fly in just tell your cabie you need a packie wicked bad and he'll get ya there" If you're flying in, then apparently the package store in South Boston is the closest. Shaw's is in Back Bay and Federal Wine is downtown somewhere.

We are flying in 2 full days before our cruise and will be staying somewhere near Copley Square. What is a package store?
138east Posted July 16, 2013 #29 Share Posted July 16, 2013 A package store is a store that sells beer, wine, and liquor. Also called a liquor store. Shaw's supermarket is at 53 Huntington Ave in Back Bay near the Prudential.

You must mean "a packie". ;) You can ask for a liquor store here and folks will point you the right way, but a "Package Store" sells packaged alcohol, as opposed to drinks by the glass. And don't try to buy a "hero sandwich" and don't be surprised if your milkshake here is pretty thin!
dakacz Posted January 27, 2015 #31 Share Posted January 27, 2015 We are staying near UM at the double tree. Are there any places selling wine near there?
Nitemare Posted January 28, 2015 #32 Share Posted January 28, 2015 I'm sure the kids at U-Mass know where to get beer and wine . . . This is probably the closest place to your hotel
cruisingmimi Posted January 28, 2015 #33 Share Posted January 28, 2015 says closest liquor store is attached to Shaw's Market and probably the same link Nitemare has given you. There is a free shuttle to the JFK Museum and if you have time go there and see the Museum. It's really a nice couple of hours to wander through it. Blue Mudshark Posted January 28, 2015 #34 Share Posted January 28, 2015 (edited) If you're staying at the DoubleTree Club by Hilton Hotel Boston Bayside, then Harborpoint Liquors on Morrissey Blvd is much closer than any Shaw's supermarket. They are about a half-mile by road from the hotel. Maybe closer on foot, but I'm not sure. The hotel desk/doorman/concierge will know. Some of the older posts on this thread are outdated, and some of them had erroneous information to begin with. There are no longer any state laws prohibiting liquor sales on Sundays after 10am. Harborpoint Liquors opens at 9am Mon-Sat and at noon on Sunday. Anyone will understand if you ask for directions to a liquor store, although in the local dialect it's called a package store (or packie). Sale of alcohol in supermarkets is uncommon in Massachusetts, and convenience stores are not likely to have much of a selection of wine. Look for a packie or a wine store if Harborpoint Liquors isn't what you're looking for. Edited January 28, 2015 by Blue Mudshark
