EMERGENCY HELP: N.O Cruise info needed

:confused: I have to make up my mind as to whether or not to book a 3 day Mississipi cruise after 3 days in New Orleans mid April 9goes to Vacherie and Baton Rouge).

 

My dilemma is not $ related but rather, I'm traveling with my mom and my 6 yo son... I wonder if the cruise is going to be interesting for him, and also has anyone been on one and could give me any insider's tips (it's the Amercian Queen) on the staterooms. They have no more with private balconies, which is disappointing. All they have for 3 is what they call "opening onto the deck" which is public... is that a problem?

So it's either option 1 with a 3 day cruise or option 2 (stay on land and take a day cruise maybe...)...

Any feedback is much appreciated, I need to make up my mind today!

My wife and I took a tour of the American Queen a few months ago. We thought it was very attractive, but the cabins and the public rooms were small, by cruise ship standards, and only a few cabins had private balconies.

 

One of my son's friends worked on the AQ for a while. He told us that the riverboats attract an older crowd, with few kids and young adults. The stop at Vacherie offers a plantation tour (can't remember which one), and there were more options in Baton Rouge. They don't have the variety of activities you would find on a cruise ship.

 

Personally, I think it would be fun, but I am very low maintenance, and could be happy sitting on the deck and watching the river. My wife likes more activities, and she wasn't interested.
