Ms_Pammy Posted February 18, 2005 #1 Share Posted February 18, 2005 Hello All :) The travel section in our local paper had a story about horse racing on another cruise line. does anyone know if Carnival now has this and how it works? The picture showed like wooden horses all dressed up but didnt go into detail about how it all works. Thanks

Earthworm Jim Posted February 18, 2005 #3 Share Posted February 18, 2005 They covert one of the dining rooms into stables where they keep the horses, and then set up the races on the Lido deck, which severely disrupts sunbathing. The races consist of 2 to 4 laps around the deck. The horses have to wear rubber horseshoes to avoid damaging the deck and the jockeys have to duck under obstructions at times. There is paramutual wagering on the races in the casino. Some of the horses and jockeys have been enjoying their vacations a little too much, so they are pretty drunk by race time. Take that into account in your wagering. Occasionally they'll have a celebrity horse such as a Kentucky Derby winner on board to participate. I imagine those horses get to cruise for free, or at least for a reduced fare. The full time employee horses work elsewhere on the ship when they are not racing. Often they replace the gerbils running on the exercise wheels in the engine room that power the ship. (No they don't use the gerbils wheels silly. They have their own horse sized wheels.) ;)
lilsonicfan Posted February 18, 2005 #4 Share Posted February 18, 2005 This is a random question, but why would wooden horse racing be fun? Is it for betting purposes?
newmexicoNita Posted February 18, 2005 #5 Share Posted February 18, 2005 E;) very cruise line I have been on has the horse racing. It has been since 99 when I was last on Carnival. I am sure it has not changed. Sorry to disappoint many of you, but most lines have discontinued the horse racing. It is something that we too loved. It had to be a money maker so why not anymore? I wish we knew.
TxStacey Posted February 20, 2005 #6 Share Posted February 20, 2005 We had horseracing on the Elation last June. It was a blast! Yes you can bet and win money on the last night, when the race is held. The owners of the horses can win money and prizes also. Does anyone know if they have horseracing on the Conquest? jleq Posted February 20, 2005 #7 Share Posted February 20, 2005 Hello All :) but didnt go into detail about how it all works. Thanks They "move the horses" with two dice in a wire cage [like you find in the casino]. One of the dice stipulates the number of the horse that's moving...the other stipulates the number of spaces moved. Since movement is either 1 or 2 spaces along the track...which is about a dozen spaces in length....probably all even numbers equal a movement of two; odd a movement of one. Or something similar. [stacey....There is horse racing on "Conquest"]
Ms_Pammy Posted February 20, 2005 Author #8 Share Posted February 20, 2005 Thanks All Can anyone get a horse to race, or just bet on them? As I would love too be the jockey
jleq Posted February 20, 2005 #9 Share Posted February 20, 2005 Thanks All As I would love too be the jockey In early races, audience members are sometimes chosen as jockeys. In the "owners race" [the one near the end of the cruise] the owner/one of the owners serves as the jockey
TxStacey Posted February 20, 2005 #10 Share Posted February 20, 2005 Thanks All Can anyone get a horse to race, or just bet on them? As I would love too be the jockey Pammy, The first night of the cruise they will have a horse auction where you can bid on the horses and buy one. I think we paid about 60.00 for ours. Buy early, there are only 6 and the prices go up as the auction continues. Throughout the week you "promote" your horse, dress it up, etc. It is great fun to "own" a horse. If you are an owner, you get to move your own horse.
