How much will I spend?

Egads, that's terrible! Yes, they have the drink of the day which usually runs somewhere around $3.95-$4.50. Plus you get to pay for bottled water too!

I would like to offer our experience on a mediterranean cruise last summer---We found we had much less time to shop on shore and spend extra cash on board because of the whirlwind, port intensive itinerary. (It was our first time in Europe, with too much to see.) We were up early, touring all day, back in time to get ready for dinner, eat, then barely hit the bed before we were snoring. So, as spending goes, I did LESS of it on this 12 day trip than I usually do on the 7-day Caribbean itineraries.

Your experience may be vastly different, but it is something to think about.

Rosie, yea maybe its good I am not on that cruise icon_wink.gif.

Phil and Ken were both real gentleman last monthicon_smile.gif

On the nights it was my turn to buy a bottle of wine, they picked up the 2nd bottle. Plus remember, I had met the 2 "head honchos" from corporate icon_biggrin.gif and we had 4 complimentary bottles sent to us icon_smile.gif.

As a solo cruiser, it is a bit different than traveling with a mate, partner, hubby, wife...etc.

Next up...HORIZON Sept 18th to Bermuda!

Re: the question about "unavoidable" expenses -- in our view, tips are the only "unavoidable" ones (unless you want to be a totally horrific human being, or God forbid, you get such hellaciously bad service you can't believe you're on X) -- we haven't yet charged them to our account so I didn't count them in my "$276 all-time high" tally.

We COULD avoid the few drinks we had -- although my husband really DOES live for 5 pm at the Martini Bar icon_smile.gif -- as for other beverages, we rely heavily on regular ol' non-bottled ship water, which tastes great to us, both in the restaurants and in the stateroom carafe (for comparison's sake, we drink Brita-filtered water at home) -- our son actually likes the free punch and lemonade, so we don't bother with the $5/day (plus tip) soda card (he does get a free soda at the cocktail parties, Captain's Club and 'welcome toast').

We have almost zero relatives and aren't terribly photogenic so we have moved from simply not buying the photos to actually politely telling the photographers "no thank you" -- so we don't have that expense.

Onboard laundry -- I would consider one or two things ALMOST unavoidable -- unless you can do laundry in port (which we did during our Alaska cruise last year, turned out that Skagway had a nice laundromat) -- if you have time for that!

BTW a couple of prices mentioned in earlier posts have either gone up (or else vary from ship to ship) -- on Mercury last week, Bingo was either $20 (for a three-card strip) or $30 (for a "six-pack"); also I understand the specialty restaurants on M-class are now up to $30/person?

$276 for a whole cruise?????? I had more than $400 on the first day ($209 for the wine package in that amount)

Ok, we did spend right at $3900 on our March 11 day cruise, but on the up side, my DW always left the casino, and we were there every night, with at least $150 more than she walked in with.

The first night she won $475, and also won the slot tournament at the end of the cruise that paid $897. I was down about $200 at blackjack but recovered and went up by $375 the last night so the overall damages were considerably less than what showed on our cc bills. It all boils down to what you want to do. You can spend as much or as little as you like. We only do this once a year so we don't worry about the money. Hey, we can't take it with us.
