Intercontinental Hotel

Can someone tell me what they think of the Intercontinental Hotel? Are there things to do around the area and any restaurants near by? I hate to get stuck eating in the hotel. Looks like we can get a decent rate there through Last Minute Travel.

Intercontinental is a great hotel on a lovely beach. There's not much to do in the immediate area other than beach lounging or going to a small casino (either there or next door at the El San Juan). There are some good places to eat. I highly recommend Mi Casita in the strip mall across the street. It's a non-descript looking place but they serve up some very tasty food at a very reasonable price. Also, just down the street about a 15-20 minute leisurely walk is Metropol - a little pricier than Mi Casita but still far cheaper than anything at the hotel, and very good.

It's very easy to get a cab to take you into Old San Juan where you can easily spend hours (days) wandering around. Parking at the Intercontinental is pretty pricy if you want to rent a car.

Thanks for the info. We won't have rental cars as we will just be there one night before the cruise. Looks like a very nice place and one couple that will be with us is looking for a place where they have smoking rooms and this one appears to have some.

Although I have not stayed at the Intercontinental, I have been in the hotel numerous times. The beach and the pool area there is great. There is a very nice restaurant there, Alfredo's, which offers al fresco dining, which is surprisingly rare in Puerto Rico. The food is very good, although expensive.

In addition to the other restaurants mentioned, there is a very nice Chili's nearby, Denny's, as well as a Mexican restaurant, Lupo's. In the nearby Vendenza hotel, there is a wonderful Chinese restaurant, J. E. Hee's. Also the El San Juan hotel has a barbecue place on the 10th floor that is open air and has great views of San Juan. So lots of choices that are a safe and easy walk from the Intercontinental.

We go to Puerto Rico twice a year for business. We usually stay at the Hampton Inn (very nice) or the Embassy Suites in Isla Verde, which are not on the beach. So I wander over to the Intercontinental and rent a beach chair. As I said, the beach there is really fabulous.

Thanks for the info. Last year we stayed at the Embassy Suites on Tartak near the Verdenza hotel...is that the one you are talking about? I really liked it and love the breakfast included, but the price of the Intercontinental is hard to beat. I also posted a question to see if anyone ever gets the Embassy Suites on Hotwire or Priceline...would love to stay there again.

Yes, that is the one. It is very nice with the breakfast and happy hour. The beach at the Intercontinental is hard to beat if you have time to spend there. Of course, you can always walk up to it from the Embassy like I do and enjoy it as well.

We're staying at the Embassy pre-cruise in Feb. but using points so the stay is free!

I had enough points last year when we stayed. I have enough for a little over half so I may end up buying enough points to stay there again. :)

we stayed at the Intercontinental 2 years ago prior to cruising on the Carnival Victory. It is a very nice hotel and beach. We ate at Metropol and it was very good. My husband had the stuffed cornish game hen...mmm it was so good!

We are returning in March 2011 and are staying at the Mariott Stellaris. This will be our first time staying at this hotel. Hope it will be a great stay as well.

We've stayed at the Marriott, but not recently. It is a lovely hotel. Beach is not as nice as the one in Isla Verde. Lots of restaurants within walking distance there as well. There is a Walgreens nearby for last minute supplies.
