Solution to the "Smoking on the Balcony" Problem/Debate

I pay for my balcony with money made from the tobacco industry. It puts food on my table, the clothes on my back, the roof over my head, and my kids through school.

It will be a very interesting and short conversation if my neighbors complain about my smoking on our balcony. I try to be considerate just to be gracious, but I am outside, and if smoke bothers you that much then don't book Carnival. I am amazed at the people that come on this board and complain about smoking when they know that it is a very smoking friendly cruise line.

Times change....the Marlboro Man died of lung cancer

I just saw some funny old ads with Ronald Regan smoking and wrapping up cartons of cigarettes as Christmas gifts....ads with Doctors smoking...an ad with Santa Claus with a cig hanging out of his pie hole LOL

Times change.......years ago you could have puffed away in the dining room....bit by bit the rules have changed

Now...many of us are hoping and trying to see they change even more

No ..we don't need totally non smoking but we want more of the ship for us to enjoy period

after the fire on the Splendor Carnival should certainly take some new precautions...yes the fire was NOT caused by a smoker BUT it shows how badly a fire can hurt a ship and endanger the lives of so many people

I am also asking Carnival IF they are "smoker friendly">> and if they "love smokers">> as so many here claim

Even the tobacco companies today tread softly with low key public service ads (all they are allowed)...yet we are supposed to believe that Carnival Cruiselines "loves" and perhaps even "courts" or encourages smoking?? Let's get real here

Every year more restrictions come in more places against smoking....even tobacco states like the Carolinas have anti smoking regulations now

and heavy smoking countries like UK, Ireland, Italy and even Turkey do not allow smoking inside public spaces

soooooo....what will Carnival do?? Well Splendor already had a new "trial" policy that "worked very well" and was made permanent.....no more smoking in piano bar and disco

you may not like it but my "prediction" is that Carnival will have some New Year changes to all their ships...bit by bit

I have been predicting they will add "spa" cabins to other ships in the fleet (non smoking).....and probably make piano bars and discos non smoking on other ships...

in five years hopefully all ships will have a few bars and a few decks for smokers ..that's enough IMHO

as for Indiebabe....25% ???? No way....the statistic is about 20%...and even if they "travel" with non smokers so what?? No one is saying give up cigarettes for a week....you could still smoke, just limit the places where you could smoke

unlike the totally non smoking Paradise what I want (and what many non smokers want) is to keep your smoke away from US...to limit you to some places where you can smoke without bothering other people...a cigar bar, sports bar, part of casino, a deck area covered and uncovered

surely rational smokers could live with that...and their families and kids would probably be happy too

I am always amazed when I see people with little kids in strollers on the smoking side of the Lido puffing away .

Too complicated imho.... this would generate way too many complaints.

I'm not a smoker and the system is fine.

I think the system is fine also and I am a non-smoker. If it bothers you that much just book an inside cabin.

I often wonder what "20% of Americans smoke" really means:confused: What age groups is that figure based on - does that include that entire population of the US - babies through elderly?

Also how does that 20% statistic apply to the number of smokers versus non smokers on a certain ship?

I'm also a non-smoker traveling with a smoker who thinks that system is fine the way it is.

Offered solution would just add a level of complexity to the puzzle piecing of trying to fill cabins with upgrades and such.

Besides, 50% of the cruisers don't smoke.

Solution seems so simple to me. If I don't choose to smell smoke, I don't go to smoking areas.

I also sail non oil powered ships, and sail exclusively on sailboats.

I walk in forests to avoid auto emmisions.

I am sure that less than 50% of those on a cruise smoke!

I know ALL the CC smokers are "respectful" and ONLY smoke in designated places (unlike some on the Destiny over Halloween haha)

BUT see I want them to have less places for them to light up ....my specific desire would be non smoking piano bar and disco at this point

also no smoking in cabins and/or balconies would be a good next step

John Heald himself has been saying again that HE feels people should not smoke in inside or "outside"' cabins (he does advocate for balcony smoking)

John Heald was also upset when a woman brought her oxygen apparatus into the cigar bar and unhooked and lit a cigarette just a foot away!! He asked the "beards in Miami" for some official ruling/rule on this

I don't think oxygen is even safe on a ship...especially if someone is smoking around it !!

I do worry about fires on board...and all I get is the idea that cruising smokers are responsible and the sprinklers work (as opposed to those smoking in trailers, houses, apartments I guess where they kill themselves, others, their pets when they fall asleep with a cigarette)

no one ever talks about the potential fire hazards that smokers could cause

Is that comment really necessary? I am not anti-smoking and I am not bashing the smokers. I am simply trying to propose a solution that might work. It amazes me that some people here will make such rude comments without even understanding the subject of the discussion.

I quit smoking 20 years ago and smoking bothers me. However, I do think people that smoke on a balcony have a right to do so. They paid for their cabin just like I did. If someone is smoking on their balcony when I'm out there, I simply go inside. I have only had to do that a couple times. Of course I'm not on my balcony all the time. The cigars bother me the most. I hate those things and when I smell it, I walk away. That is my choice as a non-smoker. I think the way the ship does it is fine & fair.

I'm a non-smoker and I, too, have no problem with the current smoking policy. The Cruise Line has restricted smoking over the years and it is only fair that smokers have a couple of lounges to enjoy, their balconies, the one side open deck space, etc.

The only problem I see is that the anti-smokers are still complaining because the entire ship is not smoke free!
