Booking a round trip but only using as one way

Have a question we are doing a transatlantic to london and found it's cheaper to book a round trip fare back to the states instead of a one way flight. Anyone ever done this? If we just took the flight from London to the states and not the return flight there would be no problem would there? Thanks so much for your advice.

If you search "one way" in this forum; you'll probably find two or three dozen threads about one way airfare, including the answer to your question

Book the return leg as far down the road as you can, and perhaps you'll decide to do another cruise where you can either use that return leg, or pay a change fee to use it. I'm assuming that you are cruising from the states, and flying back, and planning to buy a round trip ticket from London to the US and back, right? As long as you don't no-show the first leg, you are a little safer. They could come back to you if you no-show the second leg and try to back charge you for the one-way fare, but odds are they won't. If you bought a US to London and back round trip and no-showed for the first leg, you won't have a ticket for the return leg.

I guess I'll go down the path of trying to provide a useful answer.

Lots of people do it, although you are violating the contract and the airline could try to charge you the difference in air fares. As DanJ mention, if you book a TA going in the opposite direction a few months down the road, you might be able to use the full ticket.
