Gambling at sea now allowed in WA waters

PASSENGERS on cruise ships passing through West Australian waters will now be able to gamble on board after the state government lifted a ban on casino gaming at sea.

Racing and Gaming Minister Terry Waldron today announced an agreement with the operators of Perth's Burswood Casino to lift a longstanding prohibition on casino gaming on cruise ships in WA waters.

Under the previous Casino Agreement, cruise ships were required to close down their casino when they entered WA waters, he said.

The restriction was meant to prevent "cruises to nowhere" in which vessels would sail beyond Rottnest Island to conduct gaming for two to three days to avoid WA's tough stance on gaming, the Minister said.

Gaming machines in WA are not allowed in pubs and clubs.

Mr Waldron said because of a renewed interest in cruises Fremantle and other WA ports had become regular stops on cruise ship calendars and the gaming restriction was proving a drawback for local tourism.

"Burswood Casino has agreed to the restriction being lifted provided 'gambling cruises to nowhere' could still be prevented," the minister said.

"This has been achieved by the new agreement."

The agreement provides that gaming may occur if a vessel has a minimum capacity of 100 passengers, is conducting a scheduled deepwater cruise and is transiting through WA ports from overseas or interstate.

Gambling must also take place 12 nautical miles off the WA coast.

The change to the Casino Agreement will be submitted to parliament for ratification later this year but WA's Department of Racing, Gaming and Liquor is advising cruise ship operators the revised gaming restrictions will apply from today.

This must be good news week...

and dont we need it.:)

This will attract more ships to call at Fremantle.

Then they can cruise up to SE Asia etc.

All we need now is the airlines to come to the party and drop fares to meet the cruise ships, and it will be all systems GO.
