KayakBabe Posted March 25, 2011 #1 Share Posted March 25, 2011 Sorry if this is a repeat question, a silly one or just my complete misunderstanding but...Carnival website states the following: "On all other ships, the safe can be opened by using any type of card with a magnetic strip on the back, such as a credit card." My question is, if this is the case...how safe are they really. Am I missing something here?!!! Can someone kindly offer some clarity on the matter....many thanks! Shelli Posted March 25, 2011 #2 Share Posted March 25, 2011 It's not just *any* magnetic strip that can open the safe-- it has to be the same magnetic strip you used when you locked it! So yes, they're safe... as long as you keep that card on your person at all times.

Otherwise the room housekeeper has to call some engineer to come with a machine to open it.
mcwebber Posted March 25, 2011 #4 Share Posted March 25, 2011 Just don't use your S&S card and they're safe. It's the only card of yours that someone on board could get a copy of. I've never heard of someone on board having something stolen from the safe.

2boys2girls Posted March 25, 2011 #8 Share Posted March 25, 2011 Just as an fyi...the first day of our cruise I used a credit card to lock the safe and than had to have someone come with a card to open the safe because this same credit card wouldn't work to unlock it. He said that the best card to use is your driver's license...for whatever reason has the least problems! He also told me a funny story of a passenger who called because he couldn't unlock his safe. When he asked him for the card he used to lock the safe, the passenger said it was in the safe! After questioning the man, what the man did was run his card thru the slot to lock the safe and you have a few seconds before the lock activates it so he opened it and threw his card in!! Amazing!! Bunkie103 Posted March 25, 2011 #9 Share Posted March 25, 2011 We've always found it to be completely safe, as long as you remember to lock it.:o One time we even left the room and forgot to lock it. All our cash, passports and all my jewelry were in it and the door was wide open! Everything was fine.:D
norcal2 Posted March 25, 2011 #10 Share Posted March 25, 2011 I never worry about the safe as they seem to be quite "Safe". But even with that, I tend not to leave large amounts of cash in it and instead opt for traveler's checks just because cash can be a bit messy to keep track of. Even though I am cautious with actual money, I do leave jewelry, documents, traveler's checks and credit cards in it and feel perfectly safe with it. These cards are easily demagnetized-- that is why they dont want you to use that card

bunchesofun Posted March 25, 2011 #14 Share Posted March 25, 2011 There was a thread a few weeks ago by someone who alleged that numerous things were stolen out of his (unlocked) safe. But the number of things he claimed were stolen would probably not have fit into the safe at all. So take that any way you want.
deena26 Posted March 25, 2011 #15 Share Posted March 25, 2011 I cant remember what size the safes are, in Reno recently I was able to put my mini laptop (netbook) , garmin, camera, wallets, etc in it and it wasn't like a huge safe or anything. I may not bring my net book if it wont fit- but really want to, does anyone know if it would fit in the standard safe?? Thanks

amcankid Posted March 26, 2011 #18 Share Posted March 26, 2011 Your room steward and his assistant are the only one's who have access to your rooms when you're gone. To most of them, this isn't just a job, it's their economic future. They're not going to risk that by stealing some jewlery or money. Even though you wouldn't be able to prove that they took something, the accusation alone would severly hamper any hopes of promotions, and I'm sure that after a second accusation they would be history. I've always completely trusted my room attendents, and I've never had any problems, even when we've left the room and one of the kids or even myself forgot to lock the safe. I've also left cameras avd video recorders out with no problems. A good room steward will make you feel like he or she is family, and rightfully so. cajunchick Posted March 26, 2011 #19 Share Posted March 26, 2011 ditto, those stewards have too much to lose to risk stealing anything. and I have never had any problem with the safes. i take an old card with me to use. I don't use my lic because la has a magnetic strip on back and it can demagnatize it.

What makes you think the room steward are the only one's who have access to your room? The person delivering a casino gift left his master key card in my cabin. He and I, until he figured out where he left the card, had access to every cabin on the ship. Promotions? How many jobs do you think a room steward can or want to move up to on a cruise ship? How many jobs do you think a room steward can or want to move up to on a cruise ship? Regardless of who has access, I think of a cruise ship as a small town in the middle of nowhere. Sure, it doesn't matter where you go in this world, there will always be a dishonest person here or there, but someplaces are small enough that if someone is a thief, it's only a matter of time before they're caught. And I stand by my statement that a room stewards whole economic future relies on continued employment with the cruise lines. Here in the states, you get fired, oh well, you'll find work somewhere else. People from third world countries have very few opportunities to further themselves. I find it hard to believe that they would jeopardize everything by resorting to thievery. Of course, there are stupid people anywhere you go, so my assumptions are not 100 percent. I'm just saying that I feel alot more comfortable with my property on a cruise ship than I do anywhere else when traveling.
